Re: Newly married and wondering about backdoor IRA

Thank you all for your insight.

I was trying to get around the third option gmc4h232. :)

lakpr, as far as the Solo 401k, would it make a difference if I told you that the money earned from the side business could be zero or as high as 100k?

Newly married and wondering about backdoor IRA

Hello all, My wife and I were married in June. After the honeymoon we started discussing retirement, investments, and filing jointly for 2019. Through my research, I came across info (on this site) regarding a backdoor IRA. I am wondering if this would be a good option for us. We are in our mid 40s ...

Startled Cat, I got the idea from reading https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Emergency_fund
But maybe I'm just complicating things.

Help starting a T-bill ladder for EF.

Hi Everyone, I would like to start a short term T-bill ladder for the purposes of keeping a portion of my EF. My goal would be to ladder $30k in T-bills (I'm thinking in 8 week bonds) over the course of 1 year reinvesting the money to continue the ladder indefinitely. I'm also keeping $20k in a MM a...

Thank you everyone. As my moniker implies, I am new to all this. I guess I was just looking for more of a return on my EF. I appreciate the combined wisdom of this group.

Emergency fund in VNYTX or i-bonds? [Vanguard NY Long-Term Tax-Exempt]

Hi Everyone, Currently I have about 75k in a Marcus savings account as my emergency fund (EF). My primary reason for the EF would be in case my wife or I lost our job. But even then I doubt we would need the whole thing. We are NY residents. I was thinking about putting a considerable amount in a Va...

Help with Solo 401k & Backdoor Roth IRA process, please.

Hello everyone: As I continue to learn about the process to FI, I keep wondering what my next step is. I have a job with a company and my salary is 140k with a bonus of 25k. I also have a small side business that earned 30k in 2018. I only contributed 10k (because I had not yet learned the Bogelhead...

What’s the next Boglehead move?

Since I started reading the Bogelhead’s book and following the forums on this site, I feel I’ve made huge strides in 6 months. I have an emergency fund of 75k in a Marcus savings account, paid off my student loans (76k), have zero debt (other than a low interest mortgage) and invested 165k into a Va...

Am I trying to time the market?

Hi everyone, I'm a novice that has recently been reading my Bogelhead book and obsessing on this site. I started an emergency fund with 50k. Also I started dollar-cost indexing biweekly on my pay period into Vanguard VTSAX. I have a company sponsored 401k which I contribute to get my employer match,...

Re: How much of my bonus should I put in my 401k?

Livesoft, 8% of my income for 2018 was approximately $11,000. So if I understand you correctly, I should put about $8,000 of my bonus into my 401k. That way I would maximize my pretax contribution for 2019? Assuming my income stays the same (I will probably receive a small cost of living increase at...

Re: How much of my bonus should I put in my 401k?

Thank you livesoft! I apologize if I wasn't clear. I put in 8% and my company matches with 4%. I don't believe they have a "true-up" as I haven't heard anything about it. I would like to put $19,000 into my 401k for the purposes of paying less taxes. I also have a Vanguard fund that I have set auto ...

How much of my bonus should I put in my 401k?

Hi everyone, I will receive a bonus from my employer in the next few weeks for my performance in 2018. In 2018 I only contributed 8% or about 11k into my 401k. My employer matches 50% up to 4% of my income. So I maxed out my employer contribution but I did not reach the 18.5k of pre taxed income I b...

Missed maxing out my 401k contribution..

First, that you so much for this website. I just bought the Boogleheads book. In 2018 I only contributed 10k into my 401k. I know I can max out the contribution at $18,500. Is there anyway to invest the remaining 8.5k tax-fee? I have a simple IRA, from a previous employer, I rolled over into a tradi...
