Re: Dry January 2019

I'm not sure I could successfully cut back to just 1 drink a day. After 1 drink, I'm just starting to "feel good", my inhibitions are becoming lowered, and that's when I go for drink # 2, 3, 4... A few years back, I went almost year without drinking booze, and I remember that I instead was drinking a lot of carbonated flavored water drinks during that time (like the ones from Le Croix). Then I started having tooth sensitivity issues, which I thought might be from the low pH of the carbonated drinks degrading my tooth enamel, so I gave those up too (and eventually went back to drinking booze). I guess the key is if you're going to give something up, it's good if you can replace it with something else so you're not treat-deprived. I...

Dry January 2019

After a long year of enjoying alcohol, I’m going Dry for January 2019. Who’s with me? I am not a super heavy drinker, but I do enjoy 2-4 beers or glasses of wine each evening, usually consumed at home at an average cost of $2.50 per drink. Averaging 3 drinks per day at a cost of $7.50 per day, I will save $232.50 this month! If I take my $232.50 and invest it into stocks and get a conservative 5% compounded annually for 30 years, I will have $1004.85, generated from this single month of abstinence. I’m not sure if I will go the whole year, but if I do, then I will save $2,737.50. If I put the savings into stocks and get 5% compounded annually for 30 years, I will have $11,831. I don’t want to get into the medical benefits of abstinence, but...
