Re: IRA to 401K Roll In Rules, 60 Days, Vanguard Screw Ups

Frustrated out of my mind. If anyone is considering Vanguard as an investment option, steer clear. RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION AS FAST AS YOU CAN. Interesting, but i understand you had a bad experience. A lot of people here are happy with Vanguard including myself. My complain is that they don't have a live chat option. But when i call, i noticed that reps are very knowledgeable indeed. Yeah, there's always a small percentage who will never have any issues. I just try to warn people about what they may be facing. Respectfully, I think you are mistaken about which side is in the small percentage. The small percentage is the people that encounter problems of the magnitude you have. Sorry you were unlucky. You're wrong, sorry about that.

Agreed. Eliminating pennies and nickels at least should be done immediately. Dimes may need to be on the chopping block too.

A lot of things cost more than they are worth, with coinage being among the least of our worries.

I've been trying to get a rollover check from Vanguard and it's been nearly 6 weeks since I started. If I can't finish the roll in to Fidelity by the 60 day deadline because of this, can I sue Vanguard for restitution? They have sent checks to the wrong address multiple times and sent me a check made out wrong so that the roll over didn't work. How much can I sue Vanguard for? Did the checks you are trying to deposit have only your name or Fidelity’s name FBO: Your name? If the checks not written directly to you but with the institution name, there should not be 60 day clock. The check that they finally sent had my name and Vanguard on it. The form that I sent to them, their own form, had a place to put how to make out the check and I put ...

Re: IRA to 401K Roll In Rules, 60 Days, Vanguard Screw Ups

Several points. Almost all rollovers between institutions are by check. You should be doing a direct rollover? Are you? The fact that they mail you a check does not make it an indirect rollover unless it is made out to you personally. Even if it were to be an indirect rollover, the 60-day clock does not start until the day you receive the check. I was trying to do a direct rollover. I have no idea who the first two checks were made out to because I never got them. Those were returned due to a wrong address. I finally got the third check but it was made out to me. I specifically put Fidelity in Vanguard's distribution form as well as all of the correct information. They confirmed that this morning. I have no idea why they suck so bad with h...

Re: Do you charge your employer for the time that you spend working on your off days?

It depends on how secure you are in your understanding of your value to your employer. I had 50 years of creditable work history on my SS statement when I retired and never once worked for free, even though almost every employer not only asked me to, but in some cases said it was required. I will qualify that statement in that only my last three jobs could be classified as "management" and only my last one was salaried. Early on while working hourly I was often told that non-paid extra work was required, but regardless of what others did, I never complied yet never got in trouble for it or ever faced dismissal. It was somewhat ironic that co-workers were often angry with me for not giving away my labor, when they should have been...

Realistically you'll probably have to quit if it bothers you. I've seen a few unfortunate situations where people were asked to work extra every single week due to an "urgent" project (which was basically just failed management rolling downhill). The ones who were deadset against it stated their case, were either told to shut up or given no reply at all. They eventually quit.

Just see if your current 401k will accept the IRA. If yes, roll the IRA into the 401k. Then do the back door. Considering that it is late in the year, you might not get it all done by the end of the year. A word of warning - if you are dealing with Vanguard you might not be able to get it done by EOY. I started this process in September and still haven't gotten my check from Vanguard. They've screwed up my address TWICE and after it was returned to them they had to go through the whole process again. They claimed on Monday that they had overnighted the third attempt to me but I have yet to see it. In theory this should all be simple but I am learning the hard way about Vanguard's bungling ways. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the big elephant: At some point, one has enough and is old enough that there's no NEED to take additional risk. You may WANT to be 100% stocks, but you don't NEED to be. That time will obviously be different depending on the investor. But for many here who have saved well and are in their late 40s or 50s, bonds (or other fixed income) are used because they do not need an extra 1, 2, or even 3% return that might be offered by a 90 or 100% stock allocation, with commensurate risk. (I'm not speaking of the ultra-high-net-worth set who have so much that even 100% stocks is not risky.) When you're young, the compounding of that extra percent or two can make a big difference in your portfolio. And, when you're ...

Re: Inside Fisher Investments

I see their commercials on TV sometimes but never paid much attention. Kinda weird that he caught so much flak for what he said, you see and hear much worse on TV and radio quite often and nobody seems to care.

Yes, I don't even look at this forum that often, but I still occasionally see the people posting "Should I invest with the market so high" or some other variation of that question, fear is understandable but like they say either s*** or get off the pot.

I agree... I think personal finance minded people conflate emergency funds with general cash reserves for whatever reason... If you need money this instant are you going to sell VTSAX and move the money around, are you going to use a credit card, are you going to borrow from someone else, what are you going to do?

Still, tomorrow might bring a swoon. No guarantees up or down.
