Re: Thoughts on 5 Fund Strategy for Resident Physician

I'd use TR over a 3 fund because it is 1 fund, not 3. Heck, all Mike Piper owns is a simple Life Strategy fund. Personally, I think the fawning worship the 3 fund portfolio gets on this forum is ridiculous. It's fine, but it's no more fine than 100 other portfolios. Heck, it's got its own book now....

Re: Thoughts on 5 Fund Strategy for Resident Physician

Overall the priority should be pay off CC debt (and student debt), establish an emergency fund (looks like you have a bit of one), Roth IRA (while you are a low income earner), tax-deferred accounts, then finally taxable accounts. As for student debt, this is a highly personal decision and involves...

Re: Thoughts on 5 Fund Strategy for Resident Physician

Interesting discussion. A few thoughts. OP, I'm just a few years ahead of you. I went with 90/10 stocks/bonds. I started in earnest in fellowship. I agree with plans to max out Roth. I do backdoor Roth now and max 403b and 457. The rest goes into a taxed account. I am also doing PSLF. I will say tha...

Re: Reconstructing total international fund (i.e. VXUS) with Fidelity institutional funds

Does that mean your employer plan is a SEP IRA or SIMPLE IRA? It's a 403b. I also have a 457 through my employer. I use this asset allocation for both (I switched to up the emerging markets already in line with your recommendation). If this is a taxable account held at Schwab why not use just VXUS ...

Re: Reconstructing total international fund (i.e. VTI) with Fidelity institutional funds

Any recommendations in improving this asset allocation? The 55/35/10 AA is a little low on bonds but fine. I couldn't find an answer for reproducing VTI's total international. VTI is total US stocks not total international. VXUS or IXUS would be the ETFs to use. Your 35/5 ratio of FSPSX/FPADX is cl...

Re: Reconstructing total international fund (i.e. VXUS) with Fidelity institutional funds

I'm sorry I meant VXUS. Darn. Maybe someone could edit the topic title? I am pretty young so I'm ok with 10% bonds. This is for my IRA. In my taxable accounts I use Schwab's versions. I found a nice breakdown for the SCHF, SCHC, and SCHE to create a VXUS. I use 67% SCHF, 21% SCHE, and 12% SCHC. The ...

Reconstructing total international fund (i.e. VXUS) with Fidelity institutional funds

I have a very limited selection of funds I can use through my employer. Right now I am using Fidelity International Index FSPSX (ER 0.035) and Fidelity Emerging Markets FPADX (ER 0.035). I have 30% in FSPSX and 5% in FPADX. (10% in bonds, 55% in VITPX [ER 0.02] for domestic exposure). Any recommenda...

Re: Rebalancing calculator

I always rebalance my portfolio at the end of the year. While I was modifying my spreadsheet, it was easy enough to create an example for the wiki (download from Google Docs). Wiki article link: Rebalancing -or- Using a Spreadsheet to Maintain a Portfolio There are 3 approaches, use whatever is app...
