Re: 5-year Cost to Own
New2Bogle: Edmonds reports the 5-year "Cost to Own" of a Series 3, 2010, 4 door, BMW, is $65,715. A 2010 4 door, Toyota Corrola is expected to cost $31,423. The saving for driving the less-expensive car for 5 years: $34,292.00 $34,292,00 earning 8% for 20 years amounts to $159,800.00. Think about it. 8% may or may not be an appropriate rate of return, and make sure you subtract inflation and taxes from your figures. I always see these types of comparisons and I've never really understood them. You could take this comparison and apply it to anything. You could live in a smaller house, take public transportation, eat peanut butter and jelly for every single meal, never buy new clothes, etc. Some people really enjoy driving cars and...

Why are you considering a Honda if you can afford a BMW? Reliability + MPG. If you're worried about reliability, then purchase a Lexus or Infiniti. I have had excellent experiences with the Infiniti brand. As far as MPG, if you can afford a $50,000 or $60,000 car, the cost of gasoline shouldn't be a factor. My criteria are (which I should have listed in the original post): 1) Reliability 2) "funness" 3) MPG So far Lexus is topping my short list, even the my BMW test drive was REALLY fun. Haven't yet test driven the IS250 (only ES and GS). Maybe the IS will compare to the BMW? You'll want to drive the IS350 and not the IS250. Also, check out the G37 Sedan from Infiniti as well as the M37 Sedan. I think the M Series from Infiniti i...

What really needs to happen is that employers that do offer 401(k) retirement accounts should instead, and this would have to be approved by the government, offer a direct deposit to a retirement account of your choice. No reason why employers can make direct deposits to a checking account and not a retirement account. Allow all Americans to contribute to a "retirement account" with the same benefits of a 401(k) but let them choose the administrator. This could be done by creating a new type of retirement account or by changing the rules for IRAs. If you're not happy with the law, write to your Congressman and have him work on legislation to change the 401(k). The fact that the opinion was written for a unanimous court speaks volumes. I'm going to have to agree with Lester here. The problem is a bad law, not a bad interpretation of the law. We need to keep in mind that our law is a combination of statutory language and the body of legal decisions made over the years and that sometimes words or phrases acquire a legal definition that does not match the common definition. I do not know a single lawyer who would recommend a client operate as a SP and some attorneys believe it is malpractice to "sign off" on a client's decision to operate as a SP. I would say that is nonsense. He's not doing surgery. He's designing circuits. Nobody is going to try to take away his home. I know dozens of people in his industry who operate as sole proprietors. Liability depends on the type of business you are in. People designing circuits as a 1099 contractor don't get sued for millions of dollars. On the issue of how much of the holograph must be written by the testator's hand, the statues fall into one of three categories: 1. So-called first generation statutes require the holograph to be entirely written, signed, and dated by the testator. And there is some dispute among the states about whether there needs to be a date in the handwriting of the testator. Some states require a date in the handwriting of the testator and others do not. 2. Second generation statutes only require "material pro...

Electric Razor/Shaver
I'm looking for some guidance regarding an electric razor/shaver for my facial hair. I can get by shaving every other day and my hair isn't particularly coarse, but I'm growing tired of the expensive razor blade refills. I have fairly sensitive skin and the only blade I've been able to find that doesn't irritate my skin is the Mach 3 from Gillette. I'm tired of spending $15 - $20 a month for razor blades and would like to find an electric to do the job.
Thanks!

It's an awful labor market right now, I would hoard all of your cash and only pay the minimum mortgage payment required to keep the bank happy. Once you give up that $125,000 to pay off the house, you've lost all of your "dry powder." The mortgage rate is so low that I don't think it's necessary to pay off the home at this point. If you find another secure job shortly, then possibly it would be wise to pay off the home, but there's no way that I would part with $150,000 to pay off a house after being laid off.

Absolutely agree with you here, but some of the expenses are foreseeable beyond the day-to-day and thus it seems to make sense to seek a higher interest rate if the risk can be kept at an acceptable level. You'll have to determine what an acceptable level of risk is, but if you have expenses that you will incur in a few months, why not negotiate with your vendor/supplier/etc. and see if you can get a discount if you pay earlier? I'm not buying it. Those accidents were caused by someone following too closely. I do agree, however, that you have to fit in with the local driving customs. In some places, everybody stops on yellow. In others, yellow means a free for all. In my experience, the places where there are cameras tend to fall into the former rather than the latter. The fact of the matter is that a $40 box of software can do as good a job as you, or any other CPA, for simple to moderately complex returns.
