Re: Chase Sapphire Reserve - a lot of travel in East Africa

More than likely term insurance is not going to write a policy for someone living or working in those countries. I know that from experience... I believe Georgia and Florida have laws that prevent insurance agencies from denying you due to foreign work or residence if you happen to live in either of...

HSA return of contribution penalty

Good morning, I recently posted a thread about my wife’s HSA with her employer but I now have a question about my own Fidelity HSA. I opened my own HSA with fidelity a month or 2 ago and funded it immediately with $3,500. Shortly after i realized that my wife and I were not going to be on an HSA eli...

Re: Minimizing hard credit pulls when getting mortgage preapproval

Mortgage loan officer here, As long as all the credit pulls occur within 30 days of the first pull it will not drop your score any additional amount beyond the first one if they are all for mortgage applications. A law was changed to allow this because it is not fair to penalize someone for trying t...

Re: Employer requesting refund of HSA funds

After telling them that we were going on the family plan for 2 months they did some calculations again. They still didn’t come up with the same figures as me, but I guess they were close enough for them to just let it go. When I initially called them this morning the lady said something along the li...

Re: Employer requesting refund of HSA funds

So after reading some articles and the IRS instructions several times I've figured out the answer. We each will fill out form 8889 with the IRS for our 2019 returns next April, and both of us would calculate our max allowable contribution using the worksheet in the instructions. We have to fill out ...

Also, in the opening section, you say that your wife contributed $3,430 to her HSA; in the bolded section, the employer says that they contributed $430 out of the $3,430. Also, they are keeping her coverage on through the end of September, but it shouldn't matter because my understanding of the law is that if you had HSA eligible coverage on the 1st of the month you can count that month in the proration schedule.

Any suggestions? A few questions... 1. What if you say no? 2. What do you want to do? 3. What if you don't meet with them? 4. Do they require your permission to pull the money out? One thing business and poker teach you is that someone else doesn't always get to tell you what to do. At the ultimate...

Replicate VT in 401k too expensive?

Hello! I currently hold 100% VT in all of my IRAs, and I’m starting work with a new employer. I would use these 4 funds GEQYX Equity index (S&P): .13% ER GSCYX Sma...

If she refused to move into your home and wants to stay where she is, it might be a good idea for her to refinance her home on 30 years to get the payments as low as possible before she leaves her employer in September. When I worked for my employer overseas they allowed me to contribute into a Roth 401k which is the best option for someone claiming the FEIE. Credit pulls related to mortgages are different than applications for other credit. After the housing crisis the government made it so that you can have unlimited hard inquires for mortgages on your credit in a 30 day period and not be penalized any additional amount after the first pull. This is be...

Usually the max housing Debt to income ratio (PITI + all other debt min. payments) is 50% of your gross income so that should give you an idea of the minimum you need to show on your returns averaged over 2 years. Also be careful about opening lots of debt for the business in your personal name. Pe...

Mortgage loan officer here. Unfortunately banks have to comply with the ATR “Ability to Repay” act that was put in place after the housing crisis. When you make the transition to self employed you must provide 2 years of tax returns instead of just 2 years of W2s. The bank will then average your 2 y...
