One of my coworkers wants to open his first taxable account at vanguard wilh $1,700. He doesn't have a 3K to buy VTSAX.He is thinking to start with vanguard STAR fund or one of vanguard balanced funds. His goal is to save money to buy vtsax. Is it a good idea? Any recommendations?

Vanguard balanced funds

My wife wants to invest her Roth IRA in a 1 or 2 funds portfolio. She doesn't like the high percentage of the international stocks in the TDFs and the international bonds. She is thinking to add international index fund to VBIAX. She is 39 years old. Any recommendations? Thanks.

VTSAX vanguard total stock market 70%
VTIAX vanguard total international 20%
VBTLX vanguard total bonds 10%
I'm 40 years old. I didn't start saving for a retirement earlier because I'm an immigrant to the USA. I need all your suggestions & critics. Thanks.

Can you help me understand the real cost of vanguard target date fund 2045?Is it just the ER of 0.15% or I need to pay the expense ratios of the 4 underlying index funds in a TDF? If the TDF ER is 0.15 then why people still telling me that I will save money by owning a 3 or 4 funds instead of a TDF?

Vanguard is my favorite brokerage firm.My Roth IRA is at Vanguard. I have a taxable account at M1 finance. I like M1 finance for the free auto rebalancing option and fractional shares buying of ETFS.

I suppose this is a fail of the Vanguard.com website as Vanguard only offers a limited number of balanced funds. I did not recommend their more famous ones.
