RETIREES - Help with Forbes column
Mel, I retired end of Feb 2010 and am going through the transition. On the one hand it is a very good feeling to be retired and not having to think about work and the pressures that come with it and be free to do the things I want or need to do. On the other hand there are so many issues to tackle such as how to invest the nest egg, social security, medicare and medical insurance coverages, long term care insurance, taxes , inflation and keeping up with the markets and financial issues. It all seems daunting at first and so much information to review to develop a retirement plan. Essentially my plan is my budget and it appears at this time that I have sufficient income (wife and my pensions and social security) to cover my expenses. The big...

Roth IRA Conversions and Taxes
In 2010 I plan to retire at age 67 and rollover a portion of my TSP (all savings before tax) into a new Roth IRA. I have large capital gains loss carryover from prior years (both Short Term and Long term). 1. Would I be able to use these carryover losses to offset the amount of rollover? 2. Is the rollover considered as long term capital gains for tax purposes and how would it be reported on Form 1040, Schedule D (what line - is it line #8)? I plan at this time to report the appropriate amounts in 2010 instead of spreading it over 2011/2012 as my income would be reduced in 2010 and I anticipate tax rates will go higher starting in 2011 and income increase due to social security benefits. I am currently in the 25% tax bracket filing jointly ...

Mathwiz, you may want to check an article in Forbes Magazine (21 May 09) which includes Honolulu as in the top five cities to grow old. Also you have asked for "what issues" but you have not been open minded as to also ask what are the "favorable" things (perhaps you already know) and there are many. For starters you may check Google - Aloha Spirit.

Jim, you are certainly a generous person and thank you for the opportunity to read and take your advice on retirement planning. I plan to retire within the next year and will read your book and hope to find good advice on what to do with my retirement savings. There is so much information that one can easily get lost in trying to develop a plan. What I am looking for is some good common sense approach that is easy to understand and follow.
