Re: Developing Complete Plan for Windfall

3) I'll be talking to my accountant and the estate planners about this one. There are other qualitative factors to consider here though like access to extended family, etc. I think you are under-appreciating the flexibility that 100M would give you. A relatively humble condo in a zero-tax state, de...

Small value has historically been more tax efficient than total market, so I wouldn’t let that dissuade you from tilting in a high tax bracket. New college grads at Amazon make around $150k in the engineering group, for example. And those are new grads, not experienced engineers. Really! That is news to me. It seems unlikely DC area real estate will appreciate like Seattle real estate did. Seattle real estate started from a much lower base and there was a MUCH larger influx of high paying jobs than what DC is likely to get out of this.

I do not believe there is justification for concluding international stocks are riskier, at least not developed market stocks. Emerging markets are a different story. But to answer your heretical question even though I reject the premise, sometimes risk shows up over even semi-long time periods.

It would depend on how much slack I had in my budget. If I was planning on taking 4% but could get by on 2%, maybe. I would weigh the prospect of working a few extra years vs living with a permanently lower income. If I had no slack in my budget and I NEEDED 4% of the original amount, then no.

How many of them have pensions or taxable accounts? These studies don't take a holistic view of the population's personal finances, so I'm not sure we can draw any conclusions from them. It seems unlikely 1/3 of boomers will be eating cat food in retirement, though.
