Re: Comcast Grievance - How to get their attention?!
Comcast is notoriously bad. I have a friend who would accost Brian Roberts (Chairman) in the men's room of the Four Seasons Hotel restaurant. But it worked. Write a letter to Brian Roberts or David Cohen (Sr EVP). That should work. My daughter was having real problems with Comcast, so I told her if they still wouldn't solve the issue, tell them your father knows Brian Roberts and he will call him to resolve it. They immediately gave in and fixed the problem. (I met him once and he wouldn't know me from Adam.)

Medicare Advantage PPO in Southeastern PA?
I am searching for a Medicare Advantage PPO in the Southeastern PA (Philadelphia area). Medicare.gov seems to list a a few plans with drug coverage and 4 stars or better, including Aetna Medicare Silver PPO and Humana Choice PPO.
Does anyone have any experience with these two or others that they'd recommend( or stay away from)?
Thanks!

Re: Any in-house counsel on here? What’s your experience like?
I really think it depends on the company you work for, your particular area, and your boss. I am not in house but have many friends who are. For the most part, they work as hard as they did in big law (Weil and the like), they do over better control over their schedule but the stress is not less. It is a different type of stress - in a law firm, you are the money maker whereas in a corporation, you are cost. Some have gone in-house and returned to private practice as a result of organizational changes which happen all too often. Exactly IMHO. I'm not an attorney but have many friends and business acquaintances that are. One friend went in-house and ended up with a heart attack due to his increased stress and workload. Another said to me th...

Re: How to remove minor scratches from Manufactured Hardwood floors:
If the markers do not adhere, it may be that you need to apply something like a stain (minwax or similar) or even a stain within a polyurethane finish, like Minwax Polyshades. I would try the stain first. Wipe off any excess outside of the scratches immediately so that the stain / polyshades is only in the grooves of the scratched portions.
If the scratches are numerous over larger areas, it could be tough to fix this.

Re: Banff/Lake Louise Winter Trip
I'm planning on taking a family trip to Banff/Lake Louise in January or February 2020. We will almost certainly fly into Calgary. We have been to this area in the summer and loved it. We have also been skiing a couple of times. We are not experts, but are comfortable on the blues at western ski resorts. We will be taking the kids (5 & 7) for their first skiing experience. A few questions I have: - In addition to skiing and ice skating, any activities you'd recommend? - Should I rent a car? I worry about not having freedom to go where we want, when we want using public transportation. I also want to do some hiking at Johnston Canyon. I guess we could sign up for a day tour for that? Also, I live in Alabama. While I have driven in snowy/...

I'm going to be in Philly in a couple weeks and have five days to kill. I just wanted to bump this thread to see if there are more suggestions. Reading Terminal is definitely on my list as well as the historic district because I'm a history buff. I'm going to be staying near the Convention center on Market street so good places to eat in that area would be appreciated. I've lived in the area for 40 years. Historic area is not far away from the Convention Center. This includes Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, National Constitution Center, etc. Also Bishop White House, etc. Society Hill area is a very pretty walk through historic residential streets with 200+ year old townhouses. In addition to the Philadelphia Art Museum and the Barnes, the...

Re: Vacation Home: Own vs. Rent??
Hi, OP. I think you know the decision already. Keep in mind that when you buy that house, you are also buying all the time you could have spent in the house year round. So, if you don't rent it out to other people, you are paying rent even for time you don't spend in the vacation house. From a financial perspective, buying the place makes little sense, as you seem on the way to concluding. I don't know how much intangible value to attach to this sort of house though. I would not even like to buy such a place as an investment property. My relatives own a bunch of shore houses, and it consumes a ton of time to run. I will inherit these properties one day, and I intend to sell them rather than keep running them. It depends a lot on usage. Buy...

Re: Legal Contract for Loan from Parents
For an unsecured loan, it won't matter much which state's attorney you use. If you are planning on getting a financial institution mortgage on the property, they will almost certainly prohibit a second mortgage by your parents. Also, if you need the parent loan because you can't finance more of the purchase price from an institutional loan, the institution will want to know where the down payment is coming from and will insist on a "gift letter" from your parents that says it is NOT a loan. You could probably document it as a loan after the fact but your parents will have to tell a lie about it. If the loan is for say home improvements, not the down payment, then you can document it after the closing as an unsecured loan. It can b...

Re: Large One-Time Expenditures in Retirement
I have a 20 year cash flow projection in an Excel format that I use and I put in estimated costs in the appropriate year for:
New car purchase every 5 years.
Appliances, water heater etc replacement every 10 years.
If applicable, other home costs such as roof, painting, etc.
Partial furniture replacement after say 15 years.
Travel / Vacation costs, which I project will be high for 10 years or so and then decline when I hit 75 to 80.
Moving costs when I downsize from our single family home to a townhouse, then assisted living.
Family gifts for 529 College etc.
I exclude these items from my normalized annual expenses and account for them separately.

Needless to say we are baffled by people who find a way to spend spend something like $100K per year. I hear ya and my best friend mentioned above feels the same way. He lives well but works hard at doing it cheaply. The other way to do it of course is to not have the "needs" that we unfortunately have developed over the years. Many places in the US are much cheaper than where we live and that would help reduce expenses. I'd LOVE to not spend so much but, especially for my wife, it would be hard to do so. She hates it when I question (especially) her food expenses. To provide more info, here is my projected budget once we downsize and move into a townhouse. We spend a lot more than this now but I hope to get to this point: Food, ...

Re: Retirement Budgeting - What Do You Spend?
It is very difficult to compare one's living expenses to another. Everyone spends money on different things and has different priorities. My best friend, who has at least 50% more in investment savings than I do, can live well on $4,000 a month after taxes. He has a very nice condo with no mortgage but $8,000 a year in property taxes. He travels the world many times a year but has made it into a game where he can get deals, use frequent flier miles, etc. and it doesn't cost him much. He thinks my wife and I are crazy with how much we spend. He struggled for many years before age 50 when his business finally became successful, so he was used to scrimping and saving. Even today, he tells me all these strategies for saving money (i.e. buying a...

That endless stream of extra payments will heavily tip toward your wife going with Medicare.

Another Medicare Question: Keep Spouse on Employer Plan or go on Medicare?
This may have been asked before but I couldn't find it in a google search. My wife turns 65 in December. I plan on retiring about then but I have another year to go before I can get on Medicare. I plan on staying on my employer plan for the year and paying for it under COBRA.
I know I need to calculate the difference in cost for my wife to stay on my COBRA employer plan versus going on Medicare, but are there other considerations I need to take into account?
Thanks for any advice!

I think it depends on the person and how much work has been central to their lives. Some will need a new structure to be created so they are not lost with too much time on their hands. Others already have many interests and know what they want to do, whether it is planned on a schedule or is more lose. Regarding TV, I loved this quote I read: "Before deciding to take early retirement from your job, stay home a week and watch daytime television." This is from a very good book that another person recommended to me: The Retirement Maze, by Rob Pascale et al. I strongly recommend it. Haha, everybody is different. Removing mold in car carpeting?
Any suggestions on how and where to get rid of mold in our car carpeting? The sunroof seal went bad and water got in and mold developed. We had the car detailed, but he just shampooed the carpet and it didn't kill the mold. I saw mention on line of using a white vinegar solution but then some say the car will smell like vinegar! The local Serv Pro gets terrible on-line reviews. I'm happy to pay someone good money if we can get rid of it but I'm not sure where to go to get this done properly. We are in the Philadelphia suburbs BTW, but maybe someone has had a similar experience?
Thanks.

Re: I know market timing is a fool's game but...
The trouble with market timing is that, in order to make money, you have to not only make a correct prediction, you have to get the timing right. It's easy to make a prediction that there's going to be a recession. There is always going to be another recession. Getting the timing right, though. That's a problem. To quote a famous philosopher, "It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." Of course no one can know when the top and bottom are. However, there is no question that the market is emotional and my philosophy is that there are times (every 7-12 years probably) when it is better to be conservative. You don't need to time the market extremes exactly and can actually be fairly far off in timing. Here is an e...

Re: I know market timing is a fool's game but...
For most people, market timing is a fool's game. The vast majority buy high and sell low based on emotion. This has been proven. That being said, I do believe in reducing my stock allocation after a long bull market and increasing it after stock prices have fallen significantly. I have done this in the last two bull and bear markets and I've made more money and taken less risk than if I had stayed the course. Right now I am only 20% in equities and want to increase it back to 60% after a significant decline, which I believe is coming. As Warren Buffet has said (I paraphrase): "Be Fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." Benjamin Graham said that Mr. Market lets his enthusiasm or his fears run away with h...

I sold Amazon and AOL short in 1999 and eventually did very well although I was sweating it out for a while as the stocks just kept climbing. I wouldn't recommend this and won't do it again, but I did believe the tech bubble would burst eventually.
I also bought BP after their Deepwater Horizon disaster. I've found that buying stocks in situations where no professional money managers want to be caught with it in their portfolios after a major problem is also a good contrarian bet. I'm trying it again with GE.....we'll see.
I know this is a very un-Boglehead way of investing but I only do it with a small portion of my portfolio.

I believe in cycles and consider myself a contrarian. Investment cycles are due to the emotions of individuals that affect their investing actions. It is true that it is next to impossible to time the market. However, I do believe you can determine when market risks have increased and therefore risk vs potential return are out of balance. I reduced my equity allocation from 70% to 35% in the late 1990's and also around 2006-2007. I knew something was wrong when my lawn guy only wanted to talk about tech stocks in the late 90's. Everyone was talking about the "profit" they had made on their home purchases in 2006. My son told me in 2006: "Dad, NO ONE puts down a 10% down payment on a house purchase anymore." Similar to th...

I think it is always interesting what someone spends their money on. My conclusion is it is very personal and varies greatly.
Every day I drive home from work past a very ugly house in a terrible location that has 2 luxury cars in the driveway. I would never, ever live in that house. In my case, I probably have spent too much on our old house but we drive our modest cars for 10 years. We also take very nice vacations but don't spend money on other items. Each person has to judge what gives them the most pleasure for the dollar expended.
