Why are people suggesting the annuity? When op can put the lump sum pension into a corporate bond etf like HYG, or LQD and earn near the same amount and not have to give up the liquidity. I’m confused that’s all. Annuity’s really only benefit the salesman.

Re: Schwab cutting 600 jobs - announced today

I think there will always be a need for financial advisors as most millennials don’t know how to invest or inherit money. (I am a millennial and talk to many and they simply don’t know how or care to invest) We will just have to see how the next 10 years play out. If millennials don’t invest their m...

I would wait but that is just me. Follow 10 yr treasury yields. And make your decision based off that.

Re: Heloc or Sell taxable ? Home Remodel 100K

Schwab has a pledged asset line. Where you can borrow up to 75% of taxable. Obviously this has risks. But it would avoid the capital gains tax, heloc, and solve your cash need. Money can’t be deposited to a brokerage account only savings or checking

Re: Fixer-upper home: FNMA HomeStyle vs mortgage/equity/unsecured combo

Do you have any taxable investments? If so you could borrow against those in the form of a Margin loan at Interactive Brokers for 4% or at Schwab you could get a pledged asset line 5 year term loan. I don’t know the interest rate. This might be a good way to go for the renovations It might be worth...

I believe it has to be an exchange for real estate. What about farmland? Illinois has some good land. You could hire a farm manager and not have to deal with tenants.

Schwab’s New Commison Free List

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek] So happy with thier new list. So many great products like TLT, SHY and other treasury ETFs. Also EMB is on there. I like their liquid alt ETFs too from index IQ. They saved my portfolio this past bear market in December. Who else loves Schwab?!...

I strictly use TLT for my bond exposure. I know it’s more sensitive to rate hikes but overtime I think it will outperform all other bond funds.

Re: Pull from taxable savings or refi rental ?

There is a way to avoid paying capital gains tax while still accessing the cash from taxable. You could use a Schwab Pleded Asset line. I’ve never used it but it seems like a good product. You get to borrow up to 75% of your account on balances over 100k. There’s risk involved but could be lower rat...

Investing in real estate...

I know it all depends on the property but I feel using leverage to buy real estate is the way to go to increase return. I also understand it’s a double edged sword. My theory... Would it make sense to buy a property either with a heloc or mortgage even if you could afford the house cash. And then pa...

Schwab has a brokerage account called an Organization account. I would suggest opening one of these. It is specifically for entity’s such as non profits and LLC. You then have access to schwab Money Market funds and CDs. Problem solved

Do you prefer etfs or mutual funds?

This is my first thread! Glad I joined this community of smart and savvy investors. I’m very fortunate for everyone’s input on a day to day basis. My question... Do you prefer etfs or mutual funds? I honestly prefer etfs. They have daily liquidity and are tax efficient. I know Bogle prefers to use m...

Re: In kind transfer from schwab?

The 28 basis points fee gets you one on one with a financial advisor. I went to the schwab branch and listened to their pitch. This is a good product for people that want a tailored plan. The 28 basis fee is not for tax loss harvesting like someone else mentioned. Tax loss harvesting is free at schw...

Re: Portfolio for 87yo widowed Mom.

Honestly, if I was in this situation I would do nothing. A large chunk of her assets are in a taxable. This would trigger a tax bill if you sold the s and p fund. If you were to do anything I would buy bonds in the IRA. That seems to be what most people like to do on this forum. But like I said doin...

You might be right. But I believe there is a kiddie tax that prevents this form happening. I believe the kiddie tax forces children with UTMA accounts to file under their parents bracket. I may be mistaken.
