Re: Blackout shades for bedroom

Some options that worked well in our house were using multiple layers of "blackout" products. A heavier duty blackout roller shade and curtains works well in our kids room. In our room we have a large sliding patio door that I custom made a solution to help with both light and sound as nothing sealed enough for as early as we go to bed and their were bothersome neighbor dogs. I made a dual layer curtain track out of "structural pipe" and fitting from lowes, with the initial layer having 2 layers of moving blankets held up with tarp clips and some s-clip carabiners. The outer layer was a nice thick blackout curtain. Both layers extended well beyond the opening as well as above. The closer to the wall you can mount the bra...

1099-OID STRIPS taxes 2023 help

I'm looking for a bit of help on where to place the 1099-OID "Original issue discount on Treasury obligations" for some treasury zeroes that I purchased. Since this will be an ongoing presence in my future tax life I want to make sure I place this in the right part of Freetax USA. There is no 1099OID section on there from what I can tell. Does this get placed in box 3 on the 1099int or somewhere else? My 1099int is 0, however for vanguard they list the "Original issue discount on Treasury obligations" as $2053.51 thus after reading the IRS docs i'm not entirely clear on where this should get placed. Any help here would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Pressure Treated Decking Lumber

Something often overlooked while shopping is the exact amount of treatment present in the product. Different stores boards can have a different amount of the preservatives present. Menards critical structure tier pressure treated 6x6 timbers have held up the best for me in both in ground (fence posts) and on ground (walkway). I have not had favorable experiences with non-critical structure new 2x6's from home depot in outdoor exposed settings personally or menards non-critical structure 6x6's. Each store should list the amount of preservative for the product. If they dont list it...dont buy it as its probably low. I learned the hard way to be sure to check the amount of preservative so hopefully you can learn from younger me! A lumber yard ...

I know you specifically wrote of kias in the OP but we have 2 2022 kia carnival LXS's and are very happy with them. We came from a 1500 ram ecodiesel and a prius. One of the kias was originally supposed to be a toyota sienna but dealer shenanigans ensued despite a written msrp contract the day of pickup so we saved about 10k and just got another kia in a different color. Just changed the oil in one yesterday and the other is set for this weekend hopefully if it is above freezing and dry out!

Re: Gas snowblower recommendations 2024

In closing i found a used 2020 ariens Professional 32" snowblower with the 420cc motor. It's a bit overkill for my needs but it should last a long time and was a good price at 1300. I've been going through the process of a deep cleaning, adjusting belt tension, new composite shoes, new scraper, changing out scraper bolts to stainless, new shear bolts, greasing/lubricating everything including in the service panel region and sprayed some PB surface shield on the bucket/auger/chute. To those who have an ariens with auto turn if you have never taken the wheels off I'd recommend it as even though this was only a few years old it really didn't seem like there was any lubricant separating the inner and outer shafts that allow the autoturn to...

Re: Mega Backdoor Roth 401k logistics with Empower

I wanted to check in for an update if possible from the OP when tax forms come through or anyone else with empower who is going through the after tax rollover to the "traditional" IRA to see how this turned out. It sounds incorrect to have that as the only option instead of direct to roth but I'm hoping the forms clarify it and there are no issues. Wish I would have finished this before they rolled our company from prudential to empower fully as it was much simpler at prudential.

Hi, I just bought a new house and is planning to replacing locks for front, back and garage door. The front and back door has dead bolts. So basically 5 keys. My goal is to have just 1 key to open all 3. What is the best option? If I want to go the smart lock route, which brand is the most popular nowadays? Nest/Yale? August? Or some random brand off Amazon? Thanks for your advice. Are you handy and enjoy projects or is that not your cup of tea at this point? If the home has nice locks that you like (saw schlage mentioned) it is fairly easy to re-key them yourself. Schlage sells a re-key kit 40-134 as well as a larger one but I ordered this one through ACE i believe and it had plenty. If you follow a youtube vid on it it is quite easy to d...

I have installed 3 of the american craftsman sliding doors from home depot. Will you be installing these yourself or hiring out? They were budget low e sliders that I could more easily self install and transport as you build the components separately (frame and then add doors). No complaints with them and far better than the 1986 french doors they replaced. I would buy again fwiw. If you have specific questions about them feel free to ask.

Re: Gas snowblower recommendations 2024

I was able to check out a decent range of new ariens today and I didn't realize the size difference of the various units until seeing them next to each other as single unit pictures didn't provide a good scale. I have a few feelers out on used pro tier units with one of them having a hydro, however I'm not 100% sure if i would go the hydro route yet (definitely not new but used pricing is a different story.) The units with 300cc+ engines really seemed much more robust which is what I think I am leaning towards. Likely far overkill but thats most of the garage...Unfortunately the local store I went to had a unit I would have loved but i think I was being fed a line on it being new and not a demo as it was probably left outside in rain/snow a...

Re: Gas snowblower recommendations 2024

Not sure why this discussion has not focused on Honda snowblowers. They are far superior to any other manufacturer. Superior in reliability, performance and longevity. They are more expensive but will outlast and outperform Arian or cheaper models, the only model that commercial snow removal companies use here in the sierras. Smooth operation. OP lives in northern IL. That's a cold place, but not a place with frequent heavy snowfall. Though northern IL did just get a massive dump of a snowfall which may have sired this thread. Still, a ThunderCougarFalconBird snowblower might not be the best use of funds. At a certain CapEx level, I would think about paying someone instead. Gas snowblower recommendations 2024

I had to do my first repair on an at least second hand craftsman 179cc (MTD i think?) 24" snowblower that is electric start 2 stage 6 forward, 2 reverse. This one was for sale cheap in a moving sale down the road 10 years ago and I just drove it up the hill in the summer with zero research as it was only 100$. Unfortunately while swapping out the auger cable the rabbit hole of things to fix/maintain kept increasing as a mouse made a home in the belt area...the bolts are all rusted/stripped to get in there...and fluids also leaking from places that shouldn't be leaking and so forth. I'm handy but I think i'm at the point of starting over whenever I find a deal on a nicer version that I can maintain/lubricate properly from day 1. I have ...

Some of you may remember the Equifax data breach some time back. I was one of those that, when I checked, had personal data compromised. As part of their settlement, they have offered 3 years subscription to Experien Identityworks. Does it make sense to sign up for this or is it just buying into the very type of thing that caused the breach to begin with. I have not frozen my credit; for whatever reason I have been reluctant to do this but maybe should. I just don't know the ramifications of a freeze - for example, I know insurance carriers will base rates in part on credit reports. It could be they do a soft inquiry and this would still be available with a freeze (?) Appreciate any insight. Kobbiemandd Your data is already out there. Gett...

Ask company 3 guy if he works with any other brands if that is a concern of yours. You have experience with him and he doesn't seem to be price gouging you. If you have been happy with his work I would definitely give the most consideration to him. Most of the flack goodman units get online is just due to poor install as I believe they were less restrictive on who they would sell to. Most newer units don't last as long for a variety of reasons so you will be well ahead with #3. Simpler is better with HVAC (and most things).

I dabbled in this for our house (for working out, laundry sounds, etc) and did the best I could for the space/budget/practicality. The members who shared the gym tips and avs links are on the right track. The AVS guys know how to silence a room and the gym tips are probably more reasonable for your goals. Second level is tricky as you will have to consider the orientation of the floor joists as that can transfer the sound easily to the other rooms and not just through walls. Shared ductwork and any gaps around doors (they sell automatic door drop gaskets and various seals which you could consider if you have a nice solid core door) are big ones as well. Everyone has to draw a line somewhere and you may just need to adjust your lifts to fit ...

I've been reading a little about STRIPS (first learned from one of the BH). I'm trying to figure out why anyone would buy this vs. a TIPS or just a regular treasury. Since you are paying taxes on gains one way or the other, I don't see a reason for STRIPS other than the low min amounts required for purchase. If you buy STRIPS why and what role do they play in your fixed income? I invest exclusively in STRIPS for long quasi-liability matched income ladders in a taxable account (avg duration 10 years) and in a Roth IRA (avg duration 16 years). I have a reasonable expectation of needing the funds each year as the rungs mature; maturing STRIPS funds that are not needed will be reinvested toward to ends of the ladders. It may be worth investigating also ( it is rated as RED in the 403bwise site, be forewarned). This was in my wife’s previous school district, some 7 years ago. I used the Participant Directed plan with Lincoln to invest in Vanguard. This DIY option avoided the sales load to the 403b rep that would "lurk" in the teacher's lounge. There is still a plaform fee, but much cheaper than using a rep to purchase load funds. The Participant Directed plan is not advertised. Re: When do you have you HVAC ducts cleaned?

I just got an estimate to have my HVAC ducts cleaned for $1,845. That seems high. Last cleaned a little over 10 years ago. Is it even necessary? What's your reasoning for wanting your ducts cleaned? Recent home remodeling, facebook postings, allergy issues? I personally have shoved the shopvac in a bit for some metal ducts and other easy access areas. Honestly just replace the filter on the hvac regularly and call it a day unless there is a huge issue. I'd be concerned about damaging and flex ducting which is probably the most likely to even collect dust. Now dryer vents/ducts are a different story...clean regularly! They make little drill attachable brush heads that work pretty good depending on your duct layout, combined with a shop vac.

Long battery life since the handle is "dead" and the code just actuates it to control the deadlatch vs actually moving a deadbolt. Easy to install and program. Key as well for backup and you can rekey it if you so choose to match existing schlage 5 pin locks. The handle automatically locks based on design which for us was preferable (never had to worry about wife/kid to forgetting to lock) with this model but i believe they had another (595?) that you could adjust if locks or does not behind you. Sorry that you are having to deal with this. It may be worthwhile looking into the types 1,2,3 spd devices for surge protection. Most if not all mini split manuals seems to indicate the benefit of a surge protector device these days. So much so that they should really just include a type 3 from the factory... This appears to be a repeated issue at your location so you may benefit from a quality 1-2 spd device. A type 3 is what they install on the unit itself. They are ok but type 1-2 are better typically. A major reason is that they are better is that they are closer to the surge incoming as they are located earlier in the system (1 at service entrance or similar, and 2 on a breaker in the panel preferably closest to the incoming power with...

Like others mentioned you could have it as an addition to an extinguisher but not in place of. Be sure to get a sufficiently sized extinguisher and place them well. I personally have one large one (4a60bc) on each level in and one in the garage. They are all placed in visible locations so that you or someone else can easily locate in an emergency. Just having one under the sink isn't going to do you any good if you cant get to the sink with the stove on fire.

Just FWIW, the flickering you describe is why you find lights on different breakers than outlets. If you have 200amp service what you are describing should be less noticeable than if 100amp etc thus why people have asked about that number. Try looking at the number on the top breaker (was outside of frame of picture) for it. Air conditioners have a huge in rush at start up thus why they are one of the hardest items for generators to start. I've got an ancient r22 AC that I debated adding a soft start too so I could power it with a generator if needed but ended up just installing some mini splits I found on sale (different topic). They are extremely popular for RVs and may be a bit lesser known by some HVAC techs. A hard start kit is normall...

They make hard and soft start AC kits like microair that would most likely resolve what you are describing and can make using a home generator easier if that is a concern as well. What amp service do you have? There can obviously be other electrical issues that are at play but more information would be required to dig into that end. LEDs will also be more sensitive to the AC turning on as well fwiw.

These recent threads prompted me to freeze ours at the big 3 and it was far simpler than I had expected. I'm now considering the chexsystem one based on recent posts as well. I'm not knowledgable enough yet on the topic to know about if freezing Innovis is worth it. Are the criminals smart enough to just try and open things linked with Innovis since it is smaller and less likely to be frozen as everyone just focuses on the big 3?

Re: Mini-split in garage that has a vent?

A drum fan is just a more commercial style of fan of various sizes. They aren't overly expensive and move a good cfm. Mine was just a 24 or 30+ wheeled version i bolted up but they have wall mount versions too. I can't comment on vent requirements with the equipment you have as i know my old garage would air leak plenty for that sans vent haha. I have installed 3 pioneer mini-splits b/w myself and parents. These were the ones you need to vac the lineset for. If you are handy they are perfect but you need to be comfortable around electrical etc so not for everyone. 12-18kbtu seems reasonable for your use depending on the brand as some rate sqft a bit differently.

Re: Mini-split in garage that has a vent?

I'm pro mini-split but have you considered trying just a large fan? I mounted a drum fan on some unistrut i had and it made a massive difference in the summer usability of the garage. I just point it at where i'm working now. Insulation will always help and being able to close that vent would be ideal when the mini-split was in use. I'd consider adding your climate in for future posters as well.

Re: DIY Shed Build foundation - gravel vs concrete?

What kind of shed are you considering (resin, custom wood, etc)? I think that may alter the recommendations beyond just local code if applicable.

Re: Help me compare HVAC replacement quotes

Forgot to mention, have you considered turning the fan to ON constantly or on a schedule to help even out the house temp with your current unit or future ones? We have ours setup up so that the mini splits carry most of the load for the house and the central hvac fan is set to ON. The central only kicks on for us when a remote sensor in one room reaches the set temp (no mini-split in that room yet as waiting for a sale someday).

Option 3: A/C: TRANE XR15 Series Air Conditioner; 4TTR5042N1000 - 3.5-Ton Single Stage 15 SEER AC FURNACE:TRANE S-Series Two Stage 80% Gas Furnace; S8V2B080M4PCAA - Two Stage Price: $11,165 I would go this route or see if they offer a 4 ton single stage trane as i'm unsure what your true needs are in that regards and what ton you had before. This is the simplest option and most likely to give you a longer life without expensive replacement/repair issues. Two stage is great on a furnace but AC's seem to do better single stage from more "American" companies. Mini-split style outdoor units are another matter and seem to have proven themselves longer for variable speed outdoor units. You will need a thermostat specific to the brand ty...

Re: AC leak: diagnose, fix, replace, or wait?

I wouldn't bother with the leak test or coil replacement. Just decide if you want to kick the can with a refill or not. I've also never heard of a gibson until now but in a quick skim they seem decent depending on the age/model. I'm also in the chicagoland area and it seems like Lennox has taken over the market sadly but I do not think they offer the best product for the crazy amount of money the installs cost these days and they seem to have a fair amount of leak issues similar to what you are experiencing. Newer isn't better when it comes to AC/furnace sadly and simpler is FAR better. A two stage furnace single stage AC is the way to go. 410a is phasing out but when i checked over the winter i didn't see anyone releasing the newer product...

Re: Should I buy a cordless Dyson vacuum ... and which one?

We just picked up 2 cordless ryobi stick vacuums for 199ea on special at home depot. Each came with a 2,4, and 6AH battery plus charger. We started with one but our child likes to help vacuum and if you remove the extension its the perfect height for a kid vacuum. We never got ours back so decided to grab another on sale, although the house is pretty much handled by him now ha! We have a husky and a german shepherd and it does just fine with the extensive hair on our rugs with a 3yo vacuuming on the eco setting. With the battery combo you can vacuum for a long time. They also allow you to turn off the rollers if thats a requirement for your rugs. Not a Dyson as you posted about but a brand you may not have considered. We had bought our 3rd ...

Re: Indoor CO2 levels above 1650 at night!

I used to design industrial gas detectors, so I have enough know-how to be dangerous. First off, CO will kill you by permanently attaching to the hemoglobin in your blood. CO 2 is largely harmless (you exhale it, right?), but large amounts of CO 2 is how your body detects a lack of Oxygen, not by directly detecting Oxygen. No one cares about the CO 2 level, and you shouldn't either. There seems to be some confusion between the two gasses here. Second, most of these detectors are chemical gas cell detectors and are wildly inaccurate. A gas cell is essentially a wet battery with a permeable membrane. Most of these will not only react to the target gas but also others to a smaller extent. Pretty much, you can be sure that if the reported leve...

Re: House with Sewage Pump

All, I am a first time home buyer who wasn't able to pull the trigger during the low interest rate/high price environment last year. Currently, inventory is low and there is a house in the market - but the house seems to have a Sewage Ejector Pump. The realtors said it was a "macerator", but the pump is not attached to a basement toilet but rather sits separately in the basement where the boiler and furnace are and where other piping for the house in general is, and looking at pictures online, it looks like a sewage ejector pump to me. I know for a fact that not all houses in the neighborhood have one - in fact, this is the first house in the neighborhood where I have seen one and the house does sit at the bottom of a moderate hi...

Re: Bogleheads powerlifters - What equipment are you using for a home gym?

I went with a set of rogue echo bumper plates and a suitable amount of american barbell rubber coated olympic plates. The rubber coated plates from them are fantastic (not sure if pricing changed since then.) I was tight on space so used those along with a loadable dumbbell bar (i believe titan). Rogue barbell (forget model just one that was available during covid), rep 4000 rack as fit the max height i could work with and added extra pull up portions to it as that was a big thing for me. I also went the stall mat route and picked up some rep bands and hitch pins from farm and fleet to attach to rack if wrapping didn't work. If you ever consider a ski-erg/rower concept 2 is the way to go as well (but not cheap).

Re: Riding Lawn Mower

The S-series John Deere riders sold at Lowes are also sold at the Deere dealers around here - James River Equipment has dozens of locations in 3 states. They primarily sell the ag and forestry stuff, but have the homeowner line too. I have a 2016 48" Deere X-380 w/22hp Kawasaki and a 2015 Toro MX-5050 Timecutter. The 50" Toro has a 24 hp Kohler 7000, Hydro-Gear ZT-2800 transmissions (top of their residential line), welded deck, armrests, larger tires, etc. BUT - the standard hitch is limited to pulling 80 pounds and that includes the weight of the trailer. Will it pull more? Sure. But there will be long term damage to the 2800s. A zero turn with 2200 or 2300 hydros probably shouldn't tow anything. In other news, I've been repeate...
