Re: Anyone retire in their 30s?

Timely and interesting thread. I am 'retiring' from my 15 year career in a few weeks. I am 37, married, 2 kids under 6. I gave 12 week notice back in July and have been transitioning out for the last 8 weeks. My career focus has always been about trying to take on more responsibility and trying to m...

Re: Giving two week's notice before stock options vest

Only you truly know what is most likely to happen and the possible negative impact on your firm/colleagues of a 2 day notice vs. a 2 week notice. With all that in mind, you have to look out for yourself here in my opinion. If you decide that this $20k is important to you (it would be to me, that's a...

Re: Share your net worth progression

I'm 37, wife is 34. Both working FT. 2 kids, 4 and 2. HCOL market. All NW numbers are joint investable assets only (401ks, IRAs, 529s, HSA, taxable and cash). We have ~$600k in home equity (~ $1m home value, ~ $400k mortgage) but I don't really count that in my tracking since we don't plan on moving...

Re: Car insurance shopping - worth leaving USAA?

I left USAA in February 2019 (2 vehicles) for Geico and saved a lot. My premium went from $1,900 at USAA to $1,100 at Geico for same vehicles/drivers. Haven't had to use Geico yet - and I always received great service with USAA but couldn't justify the significantly higher cost.

Re: Should basements be insulated from the outside or inside? New construction

I'm in the northeast, and have a new construction home < 5 years old and work with home builders. In this market, insulated concrete forms are not the norm for new residential construction. Exterior basement walls will have a below-grade dampproofing agent applied before fill gets pushed back in, an...

Re: What's Your Opinion on Nest Thermostats

I have 3 of them for my 3 zones (downstairs, upstairs, master bedroom). They were heavily discounted from my state energy commission if I recall. They are the newest models. 2 of the 3 have had their WiFi chipsets fail and Google / Nest has sent me a free replacement (just the face, don't need to re...

Re: Rumor mill - Fidelity starting individual HSA's Nov. 15th

I submitted my transfer paperwork to Fidelity HSA on 2/8. After 3+ weeks I went into the local branch today and turns out I needed to call my prior HSA provider (HSA Administrators) to confirm the transfer as requested. You'd think that Fidelity would have been more proactively alerting customers ab...

New Pickup Truck - Best Way to Acquire?

I'm in the market for a pickup truck that will be owned and registered under my business (home contractor / single member LLC). Is there ever a situation where a lease makes sense for a business (intent to buy out at end of lease)? This will be my primary driver for both work and personal, so likely...

Re: Seeking lot loan to build house

It's not a process for the faint of heart. We cleared raw land and built a home 3 years ago, had a seemingly larger financial cushion and more local construction/banking connections than you may have. Not to say it can't be done, but go in with your eyes wide open about the impact this will have on ...

Re: Suggestions for Online Banking (Having Problems w/ USAA)

I use USAA for my banking needs and as my 'hub' to see all my other accounts as well. The $5,000 limit has been in place for some time and AFAIK is designed to prevent someone from gaining unauthorized access to your online USAA account, linking to an external account and then emptying out your USAA...
