All that running seems like unnecessary wear and tear. :-)

Re: Retirees apparently tend to maintain assets - lessons for BH investors?

If you've lived your entire life being frugal, its hard to change behavior overnight and just spend because the money is there. The money was always there, and we've gotten used to frugality and a certain lifestyle. Just spending more money won't buy happiness. And one would rather keep money for heirs so when life throws curveballs at them, they've got a safety net - again not being wasteful, but ensuring money gets put to good use - same frugal mindset. Living as frugally, as I can, and taking a couple of semi-expensive vacation, we were at 175K total spend last year. With kids out of home, and home paid off, I expect to spend just 100K a year, or less - perhaps 60K if I move to a cheaper place - but I'd want to be close to kids - so movi...

Given that I'm working from 100% of the time and bored of the Seattle area, thinking of moving to a different state. Denver is one of the cities I was considering moving to. Diversity is the least important thing though - in order of importance- a) schools B) fresh air C) easy access to biking/hiking trails D) proximity to Whole Foods/other organic/crunchy grocery stores I'm in Fort Collins, which is an hour north of Denver. High quality of life is bringing a lot of new people. We are in a hiking and mountain biking mecca. If I were to move to Denver metro, I'd pick Golden/Arvada/west Lakewood/ Wheatridge areas...but my #1 would be Evergreen. Castle Rock, Lafayette, Louisville, Erie are all family friendly places too. Re: Thinking of moving to Denver

I live about 50 miles north of Denver. You can look up the official air quality numbers for Denver. I know along the Front Range, there are common issues: ozone, dust, and smoke from wild fires. Ozone is related to elevation and human factors. There really is ozone. It is semi-arid here. That causes a brown haze to appear. It is real. Wild fires in the Summer and early Fall can be horrible. I have lived in Colorado for 24 years. During that time accept for one of those years, I would say there has only been a few weeks where we wouldn't go outside. I think it was 2020 that was really bad for a month or two. We had the two largest fires in state history at the same time just west of us. It was really bad. If you like the area and do not hav...

Re: When should I target retirement ?

OP: I’ll be a little less harsh on you :) With similar nw and age numbers, it’s no surprise you’re probably saving 20-30% of your total ~$500k income. So, $500k - $150k (taxes) - $150k savings = roughly $175 - $200k spend. Tell me I’m in the ballpark ;) At these asset levels, and ages, we have to remember we have options. I would focus on paying off the mortgage. There is a huge psychological benefit to paying it off. It’s like halfway to mental peace that you can lose the job and be fine. Second benefit, you can start saying no at work (in the right way). Good luck, you don’t have a financial problem. You need to solve the health problems. Your NW will be fine to retire in 2-5 years regardless. Best wishes, let us know how it goes. I also...

Re: When should I target retirement ?

Well, most of W2 income either goes into deferred comp, 401K, ROTH etc - or gets deposited as lumpy stocks as they vest. I sell when I need the money... what hits my account is barely enough to pay the rent... In any case - glad I did the exercise. Last years expenses across all CCs were about $130K, tack on $50K for Housing, lets round it all up to $200K expenses. 200K * 25 = 5M, so I'm nowhere close to that. 3M growing at 7% is about 4.8M, so at 55 I'll have enough to retire, even if I don't add more money. In fact, at that point the lump sum extra i get will be enough to pay the house off, let's say expenses are 150K , which brings what I need to about 4M. Another way to look at it - if I pay the house off, expenses will be around $150K ...

We pay everything through the same checking account. I have to make some adjustments to get an accurate number (paying off DH's same bank credit cards is ignored the same as transferring to a savings account), but it allows me to peek at the 12 month rolling average every month.
That makes a lot of sense! Never thought of that. We’ve got two checking accounts not one - but same principal applies!

When should I target retirement ?

Crazy asking a bunch of strangers. :-) I think I know the answer - I need to work another 7 years - until I hit 55, but asking anyway. Turning 48 soon. With the recent ‘upward correction’ we’re at $3.35M + 1M home equity in a 1.6M home. Rather, breaking down some more A) 3M liquid across 401K, IRA and taxable. Invested 85/15. B) About 400K in 529s. I think I went overboard, but oh well. Kids are 6 and 12. The older one wants to go to Caltech. I’m sure it’s just a passing fad. He’s smart enough and has a shot. Younger one - I’ll be happy if he goes to college. Or we’d have to move to a different country that’s kinder to people who aren’t in top 1% of smarts. (Dual citizens - Australia/New Zealand and US). C) home is 1.5M - probably 600K outs...

Hmm...
Lose 40lbs.

Muster up enough courage to retire? I'll be hitting 48 - and numbers hit 3.3M end of December. I'm sure that's plenty of money in any world. If I can't retire on that, it's on me - and I can't retire on 5M or 10M either.

Alternative is to work another 10 years - until 58, and probably die at 62 - 65. - or just fall horribly sick before 58 and be forced to retire...

Or find something more enjoyable that still pays decent.

Yeah - so lose 40lbs and quit current job (either to retire or a new job).

Considering retiring myself - 47, 3.4M. Two issues A) I actually like my job. It’s stressful but having tried a bunch of other things wouldn’t know what to do. B) wouldn’t know how to impart work ethic in my kids if they don’t see me do anything. I also like my job, so (if it continues as is) I likely won't stop doing it until they ask me to leave regardless of financial situation. I used to be really concerned with "B" as well, but considering how we spend most of our free time, I think you can model work ethic with things outside of work - fixing things around the home, taking care of your physical health, etc. If I am being totally honest, because of my awesome work situation, I probably spend close to as much time on physical...

Studies show that spending time with your kids is the biggest predictor of their success. They learn work ethic by seeing you work through problems, sticking through difficult things, celebrating successes, etc. Not by you going off to a job, asking them to respect the sanctity of your conference calls, or whatever employment looks like to you. You can do plenty of the former while working, but it isn't the job that instills a work ethic in them; it is you applying a work ethic to the things that are visible to them.
great points! Thanks!

Kona beans are bright and fruity when given a light or medium roast, but their flavor completely vanishes with a dark roast. Growing up and living in Hawaii, I did not know this. Good Kona Coffee from Peaberry beans and direct at or from the Plantation on the Big Island has a very distinctive flavor. But, as you say, people and "local islanders" got used to the dark roast color and fragrance and taste over time, then called "that" what Kona Coffee tastes like. Re: Bond funds vs individual bonds - same duration - same ‘risk’?

With the first option you start with a 5 year bond, then it becomes a 4 year bond, a 3 year bond, and eventually a 1 day bond right before it matures. You'll get less and less interest rate sensitivity as time goes on. With the second option you start with a 5 year bond (essentially) and it stays a 5 year bond the whole time. If rates spike the day before you sell, you might lose a lot of money. Yes - but I’m only going to be withdrawing the 10K + promised interest that I invested 5yrs ago… - and the fund in any case is an average of 3-8yr bonds… So yes, say interest rates spike, and individual bond prices fall - but it’s also got a bunch of bonds in it that are maturing the next day - that % of bonds shouldn’t be impacted, no? Probably be...
