Re: Cruises, where to book?
I've booked a few cruises with Costco but their website can be difficult when choices are involved. I believe if you call you can probably get what you want. I assume your looking at a balcony that would include all offers. See if you can decline the drinks and dining. You would still get the $405 C...

Re: keeping both stocks and bonds in tax deferred for rebalancing
So the TSP would be 100% G fund because it is 60% of total assets and you want 65% of total assets in bonds. That would mean 5% of total assets would be in bonds in the inherited IRA where it will fit. Yes, that would leave 12% of total assets in the inherited IRA in equities. Try it and see what h...

keeping both stocks and bonds in tax deferred for rebalancing
I understand the reason for keeping both stocks and bonds in tax deferred for rebalancing. I was wondering if there was any rule of thumb for determining the right amount or percentage of stocks to keep in the deferred account. The current percentages of my total portfolio are: 60% TSP 22% taxable a...

Re: I need to get this house appraised, correct?
I'm getting a recently-deceased relative's home ready for sale. They transferred title into their revocable living trust back in October. But died earlier this year, so I got a new TIN for the (now irrevocable) trust. Don't I need to get an appraisal for the home as of their date-of-death to know t...

Re: Did I forget to file 8606?
I hope it's ok if I ask for a check of my 8606 in this thread instead of starting a new one. I have been looking for info on contributions done for a previous year with the conversion done in the current year. This thread has the answers I need although there are a few differences (years 2018/2019, ...

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek] Hello all, I'm looking for some more guidance on my asset location.I have been a little hesitant on pulling the trigger since a post I made in September. I have a general understanding from the wiki but I'm not sure of one thing. As in my title...

Re: Problem opening testamentary trust account at Ally
Why be locked in on Ally? Perhaps they’re solid, but I have seen instances where they are less than stellar in their performance. You seem to be having some difficulty now. Why not walk down to your local bank and work with a live person and get this accomplished? I also noticed you said you applie...

Re: Problem opening testamentary trust account at Ally
Ally can open an account for a testamentary trust; I have done it, and the account has been operating perfectly fine. Obviously, there is no trust document other than the will that creates the trust upon the decedent's death. You need to speak with someone at Ally who knows what they are talking ab...

Re: Problem opening testamentary trust account at Ally
Ally has detailed instructions on how to open a trust account : https://www.ally.com/learn/trust-account/ I saw that page previously. It mentions testamentary trust and also wants signature of the grantor on formal trust documents. That's the problem. The grantor died in February. I can't get his s...

Re: Problem opening trust account at Ally
You need to go through the Probate process, and then actually create the trust. Once that's done, then you fund it. I did go through probate. The estate is almost closed with all the money already having been distributed. No one in the court house, or my attorney or cpa ever mentioned there was any...

Re: Problem opening trust account at Ally
Op here. I don't know what else I need to do to open the trust. I thought the will was the trust when it's testamentary. I created an account at M@T Bank no problem but realized Ally would better serve my needs. I did file with the IRS to get an EIN

Problem opening testamentary trust account at Ally
I applied for a trust account at Ally. This is a testamentary trust that is for my father's grandson (my nephew). My father passed in February. I do have an EIN for the trust. I attached the full will and my surrogate certificate to the application . Ally called and left me a message to call back. I...

House co-owners, separate wills with nolo willmaker
Hello, My girlfriend of 35 years and I co-own a house 50/50. Everything else we own separately in individual accounts. We have no children I just purchased willmaker assuming it would be easy to do wills. She would be my executor with my nephew as secondary. I would be her executor with her brother ...

Re: Trust Under Will (TUW)
I’ve never seen a date in the title of a testamentary trust. A will speaks as of date of death and the date of the will is never used. If you are asked for date of the trust you could use date of death or date of initial funding of the trust. Correct title in my experience is “John Doe as trustee u...

Re: Trust Under Will (TUW)
- Being a trustee has risk. You are responsible to the beneficiaries for the manner in which the funds are invested and disbursed. The standards for trustees are not necessarily the same as individual investors. This may be a non-issue for you dependent on trust size and family relationship. - Make...

Trust Under Will (TUW)
Hello everyone. Some guidance here would be appreciated. My father passed away in February. His will created a trust for his grandson (my nephew). He is 19 now and the trust lasts until age 25. I am the executor of the will and the trustee of the trust. The estate attorney who created the will told ...

Re: My TSP plus inherited IRA 3 Years to go
You have a lot of cash so I would take a hard look at paying off your mortgage which would still leave you with $600K I will strongly consider this in about 2 or 3 years. We are going to downsize into a "community" sometime after I turn 55 and I should only have $50,000 to $75,000 balance due to ha...

Re: My TSP plus inherited IRA 3 Years to go
Welcome to the forum! One point you might have missed. You live in NJ, which does not allow a deduction for contributions to the TSP, nor to an IRA unless it was rolled from a 401(k). Therefore, you need to find out how much your father contributed to both accounts; this fraction of your TSP and IR...

Re: My TSP plus inherited IRA 3 Years to go
To be blunt, you are making a fundamental mistake in making your goal to replace 100% of your salary in retirement income. Even if you weren’t saving a penny, you are paying about 8% of your salary in payroll taxes. That is about $5,800 in expenses that you will not have once you retire. But you ar...

My TSP plus inherited IRA 3 Years to go
Hello everyone. Hoping for a little guidance. I found this site in February this year. My dad passed away and I was the executor and a beneficiary. In going through his paperwork I realized he was paying over $3000 per year to an advisor with Ameriprise for an IRA and taxable account that totaled ab...
