Re: ID.me - I surrendered
At the last step of the signing up process, I was asked for my phone number. I have a cellphone with an MVNO service provider - US Mobile on Verizon. ID.me said it couldn't verify my identity with the number and I lost all my previous work which including the photo of my driver's license, the selfie, the lamb sacrifice, etc. More than annoying. Does anyone know WHY the dam thing can't verify the phone number? Anybody else have that problem? Anything I can do about it? I went through the same thing. Verifying the phone number alone was insufficient. They need proof that it's actually you who owns that number. No prepaid cell service or VOIP number would work. You need a postpaid cell plan that included a credit check when it was set up.

Re: Can you save too much in retirement accounts?
Yes, you can save "too much" in tax-deferred, if you define that as total lifetime tax burden, but quantifying that requires an ability to see into the future. Which I lack, so I simply went with deferring taxes as much as possible over the years. No doubt sub-optimal, but I have no regrets. Keep in mind that your largest unplanned expense once you get into RMD land is likely to be for healthcare, which is (currently) deductible.

Absolute cheapest would be Google Voice but you’d have to first port the landline number to a cell carrier, and then port from there to Google Voice.

If you can do that, I would. My experiences with TIAA were not exactly horrible, but irritating enough that I pulled everything out - after jumping through more hoops than I thought necessary. If you like the Traditional account, that's a reason to stay. Otherwise if you are someone who values simplicity and transparency (as I am) then TIAA is exactly the wrong place to be.

I use it as a backup. Our cell service is marginal but usually download is around 50-60 mbps. Good enough for our normal use, but as others have said, occasionally the speed will drop so low that it’s effectively down. A reset generally clears that up, but in our home any downtime at all means it fails the DW test. I would be happy with that definition of marginal. Marginal for me is text messages might get through, voice is a no go unless you walk out to the road, data is a no show, ever. On my list is to contact VZ to see if they can redirect their towers but I’m not sure if that is even technically possible. Ouch. To clarify a bit, I get that speed in exactly one magic spot in the house. Any place else, even a few inches from that spot,...

T-Mobile Connect plans are cheaper, but may not be suitable if you are big data users. My wife has been on Connect for years with no issues.
MVNOs generally cannot do network roaming. This may or may not explain the problems you are experiencing.

Yup. There are plenty of passable (to the untrained ear) amateurs who will play for pizza money, or nothing at all. Because they have day jobs and play for fun. These days people will pay a few hundred for a DJ, but a few thousand for a live band? No way.

The downgrade may just be relative to your peers, or perhaps there was a directive to grade tougher this year. I would simply ask my boss where, if anywhere, he thinks I dropped the ball.
Not saying this is the case, but if last year was year 1 for you, and this is year 2, it's conceivable that your boss expected a bit more growth. Top performers don't just wait for assignments, they surprise their bosses with improvements.

So true. I would never buy a house simply out of financial anxiety. With the house comes maintenance, yard work, property taxes, higher insurance rates. Apartment living is relatively carefree, provided your neighbors are decent. And if not, it's so much simpler finding a new apartment than selling a house.

Verizon and AT&T prepaid are a bit pricey. DW has T-Mobile's most basic plan. $10 a month gets 1000 minutes and texts, and 1 gig of data. She's never come close to hitting those limits. There are cheaper MVNO options but she likes T-Mobile's network and support.PeninsulaPerson wrote: ↑Fri Oct 14, 2022 12:09 pm Is it possible to shop around for pre-paid plans? FYI - I use my phone to send a few texts a week. I get appointment confirmation texts from my dentist, hair salon, things like that. I also use a handful of apps. And I take photos but am not looking for a super camera. Occasionally I make a phone call. Pretty basic uses and not data heavy use. (No video streaming, music or gaming.) No particular problems or concerns about battery life. For such light use, just about any phone above the lowest of the low end would be fine. Paying more gets you 5G, more speed and storage, and a better camera. Of those, only 5G sounds like a benefit to you, and even that's debatable. I don't think going to a postpaid plan would make financial sense. Those are mainly for heavy users who want a flagship phone....

If you're in the same room as the router, you should probably plug in a cable. Is it right that being on different frequencies would help, and the 5ghz is better if you're near the router?

A steady 98 mpbs is way more than enough for two simultaneous video calls. But if you really want to troubleshoot, WiFi speed bottlenecks are usually because of the router. You could disconnect your router from your modem, briefly plug that cable directly into a computer, and run a speed test (I use speedtest.net) to see if you get your full 200 mbps. If so, a router upgrade MAY help. But if not, the issue is probably either that your modem is ancient, or there's a problem with your internet service itself, in which case you'd have to call them if you want them to check.
