Re: US investing as a US expat via a joint account

Nobody knows what will happen in the future. The US could make it illegal to have money outside of the US, or Belgium could make it illegal to have funds outside of Belgian if you are a resident in Belgian. But as things currently stand there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your ideas to me, ...

Re: Retiring abroad in 2021 - investment advice sought

Sorry, but I can’t answer your question specifically, but I do have some thoughts about your situation. Have you contacted the company that will hold your US funds to see what they will do when you live in the UK? I have heard of US financial companies freezing accounts when resident abroad. I have ...

HDHP HMO and HSA or Gold HMO?

Any thoughts on how we decide between the following health insurance options? In our state there are no PPO plans for individuals, we can only get an HMO plan. Both of the plans below have the same provider network. We are a family of three, mother and father are healthy and take no drugs, child was...

Re: Advantages for US persons abroad

I think I've come up with something positive. If you are a European resident I have found cheaper car rental rates for visits to the US using European car rental sites. These rates often also include insurance (useful if you no longer have US car insurance as US credit cards do not cover liability i...

Re: [wiki] New page for (potential) US citizens abroad: "US tax pitfalls ..."

Maybe you can explicitly write that UCITS funds are "not good". Thanks. I'll add a note on this. Although there are plenty of funds and ETFs that are a tax death-sentence for US citizens living abroad, some UCITS and some not, the UCITS tag is at least one easy way to tell straightaway that this wi...

Re: Advantages for US persons abroad

I can’t think of many positives, but if you move to a politically unstable country as a US citizen you have the right to easily return to the US. Citizens of that politically unstable country probably don’t have that luxury.

Re: [wiki] New page for (potential) US citizens abroad: "US tax pitfalls ..."

I don’t pretend to understand the FTC but it appears to me that you can be double taxed on foreign rental income if you do not have any US rental income. Also you cannot get the tax credit for a lot of foreign passive income as there are percentage calculations of foreign versus us income for each i...

Re: Should we downshift and move to Europe?

There are positives and negatives to living anywhere. My partner and I are both dual EU/US citizens and have lived both in Europe and in the US. Neither is perfect. There are also large cultural differences between EU countries, but pretty much all will come with increased bureaucratic hassles and c...

Re: Best option for transferring +/- 100k Euro to US$ account

I have always wondered what the general spread is for banks on currency transactions. I am sorry, but I don’t have an answer to your question other than I use TransferWise as at least they are transparent with their fees/exchange rates.

Thank you all for your thoughtful comments.
I will work on your suggestions.
I have been a « messy » investor- adding too many funds on a whim and am happy to have a route towards simplification.
So glad to have found this forum.

Re: SodaStream: a good replacement for Costco Kirkland sparkling water?

We love our soda stream. Taste will depend on whatever water you use. Best to use chilled water as it will absorb more CO2 and give you more bubbles. Water doesn’t hold the fizz for very long, but it is easy to “refizz” if necessary. We bought one for long term cost savings and to avoid plastic/glas...

Individual European stock picking for value and fundamentals

Hi, I am an expat American who cannot invest in European ETFs or mutual funds due to PFIC rules and has some money in Europe that I do not want to bring back to the US, so I am looking to invest in individual stocks. Could anyone suggest a starting point for looking into good value/fundamentals in E...
