I purchased a house and it came with the Interlogix Simon XTi security system. It's an older system but it works. However, one of the sensors to an entry door no longer works and I've tried replacing the sensor to no avail. Unfortunately, the seller of the house does not remember the dealer/ installer code so I cannot get into the menu for programming new sensors. I can try a factory reset but that means I would need to reprogram all the 20 plus sensors and zones. Something I'm not very comfortable doing atm.
Should I just purchase a new DIY alarm system like Ring security system instead? Or try and make the effort to reset the Interlogix Simon and reprogram the entire thing.

This only defers, but you will generally come out ahead over along period of time over just taking it as income.
Alternatively, pay the tax and put the rest into Roth. Think long term.

Hey everyone thank you for the inputs. Very insightful.. Wife and I have been doing a lot of talking. I admit even changing our minds at times. Things are still fresh (my layoff) so we will keep talking and figure things out. IT IS A MAJOR decision and I really want to be certain about following through.

Needing input - Thinking to move back to TX after my move to CA
Wife and I recently moved from Houston, TX back to California last year. We were in Houston for 5 years and realized we missed CA, the weather, lifestyle and friends. At the time we made the decision to move back, we had 1 small child and one on the way. We sold the wife's business, our house and I landed a job here in San Diego. Recently I just got laid off and the reality hit us. We have a emergency fund that should last 6 months however, this situation made us take a hard look at our financial future. Living in CA with two small children is freaking expensive compared to Texas. Wife's earning atm is small since she is pursuing her BCBA license and my earnings are ok, I'm in IT with over 10 years of experience. So things should be a littl...

Re: Laid off!!
My father told me a long time ago to never for a minute believe that an employer, even one that appears to be very nice, has any meaningful loyalty to its employees and that employees are only viewed as valuable to the extent that they are perceived to help the employer's bottom line. My experiences and observations of others' has shown me that that view is almost entirely accurate. Consequently, I have tried my best to not get emotionally attached to any of my employers for I know that they are certainly not attached to me. I just got laid off/let go this Monday and this is exactly what I should of seen before I joined this company. Ok I'll give that a try, thanks.bi0hazard wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 6:51 am Kind of a long shot.... but when my Accord key fob died, I bought cheap battery replacement online and the the battery was dead on arrival, so the fob didn't work. Additionally, some of those batteries look very similar, but they may not be exactly same. So personally, before taking it the dealership , I'd get another high quality battery (energizer, duracell) and make 100% sure it is exactly the same type # as the original and try again. When the key fob is open, make sure there isn't an obvious internal defect that can be easily fixed with some home made ingenuity (been there) as battery is the most common issue by far.

Re: Honda Accord 2nd key fob no longer working. Do I call the dealership?
My 2016 Honda Accord EX-L second key fob no longer works. It was working before and I changed battery and it is still not working. Nothing happens when I press the lock or unlock button nor when I push the start button. I did some research and found instructions https://www.hondapartsonline.net/blog/how-to-program-your-honda-remote on programing a key fob. Not sure if this is the correct course to fix this issue. Anyone had a similar experience? :confused Hard to tell from your post, but was it working when you went to change the batter? Was it - working, change battery, not working or working, not working, change battery, still not working It was working a a spare key fob then it stopped, so I changed battery and still did not work, thx.

Which state do I apply for unemployment if recently moved to a new one
Due to Covid 19 reasons I will most likely have to apply for unemployment end of August 2020. I moved from Houston, TX in mid February 2020 to Southern California working from home 100%. For the last 3 years I have been residing in Texas and in mid February 2020 I started paying California taxes after my move. I'm a bit confused on what are the requirements for the base period. If I apply for unemployment in Texas this coming August, February and March 2020 would not be included in my base period since that I relocated to CA. I checked the CA EDD base period and I don't think I qualify in California. Forgive my ignorance, I'm a bit intimidated with stock investment. I've done a few searches for Robinhood and found this thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=316122&hilit=robinhood basically saying I should stay away from it. I want to learn stocks and trading on a very small scale. I do have a account with Fidelity but don't they charge for trading? Or is Robinhood ok for me to start with?

Thanks for pointing that out. I was stuck on the $50 thinking it was some kind of a good deal. I guess I was worried about leaving Tmobile to try another carrier.bloom2708 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 10:06 am $50/ month for 2GB is highway robbery today. Especially on T-Mobile coverage.
Buy your phone outright/unlocked and switch to an MVNO with more data and way less money.
Cricket Wireless, Total Wireless, Mint, Red Pocket, many options with more data and less cost or both.

Good strategy to switch phone carrier and get a discount for a new phone?
I've been a "loyal" T-Mobile customer for over 12 years and it has not gotten me anything. No upgrades, no perks, just no incentive to stay with them. My current grandfathered plan is $50 per month for 2GB. I own my Samsung S7 and looking to upgrade to a S10 with another carrier.
I looked at AT&T and Verizon but so far no major deals. Talked to a phone guy at Costco and they had $50 off the S10 with a $200 Costco card.
Anyone recently had success with getting a new phone deal?

Which state should I apply for unemployment TX or CA?
Hi all,
I may be looking at a temporary furlough from my job due to you know what and want to be prepared. I've done some research but still can't find a definitive answers. My current job of 4 years plus was based in Houston, TX and I recently moved to California on Feb. 15 2020. I have been working remotely 100% since then. My paycheck stubs are showing deductions for CA SUI/SDI Tax since Feb. 28th. Before that my paychecks were based on Texas deductions.
Should I apply for Texas or just California unemployment since that I'm a full time CA resident now.

Hi all,
I'm too lazy to do research on this so I'm asking here. I've had my Canon ink printer for 3 years now and I need a upgrade. Any recommendations on what I should get? My budget is $100 to $200. I'm thinking laser is better but cartridge refills are cost more?

Rent a van from U Haul or Home Depot?
I'm picking up a couch and I'm not sure which place I should rent a 9 foot van from. The full trip will be around 15 miles and should take around 2 hours to complete.
U Haul is charging $19.99 plus .79cents per miles
Home Depot van is $75 for the first 75 minutes and $21 every hour plus a $250 deposit
I'm leaning toward U Haul but last time I rented a truck the total cost was way more than I expected.

Is drive up storage worth the cost?
I'm selling my house and will temporarily store my belongings in a nearby (1.5 miles away) storage. The cost difference for drive up climate controlled storage vs. elevator located storage is quite big. I don't have large items to store (no fridge, couches and such). The only large items are my two tv's a Master bedroom set, 2 bicycles and a bunch of boxes. I plan to hire movers and I presume they charge by the hours? So the faster they unload and load when I move again will reduce the cost of moving.
Any suggestions?
10x10 drive up = $91
10x10 elevator = $43
This is for the Houston, TX area so I need climate controlled.

Re: How can I figure out how much storage I will need for a move?
probably 2 to 4 months. That's a good tip thx.psteinx wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 11:07 am Also, how long do you expect to store stuff?
If it's 2 months, then going a size larger than you expect doesn't carry too much downside. If 2 years, then getting it right matters more. Showing up at a storage facility with a big truck of your belongings and finding it doesn't fit into your reserved/leased space could be bad.

How can I figure out how much storage I will need for a move?
We're planning to put our stuff temporarily in storage for our move and I can't seem to figure out how much space will suffice. We currently have a 4 bedroom house but pretty much will get rid off or sell everything to facilitate our move. That includes no large furniture items. Basically we will end up with one king size mattress, one queen size mattress + spring boxes, two large boxed flat screen tv's, boxes of cloth and stuff, two adult sized bikes and some kids stuff.
Would that considered a 2 bedroom house?

Re: Requesting some general life advice (career, living location, etc.).
----- So ultimately, I think it's about determining what is important in your particular immediate family situation when it comes to quality of life and what you are or aren't willing to compromise. Sure finances are extremely important, but so is quality of life. Determining what you want for your quality of life is sometimes difficult. We've made more than one move away for career and other quality of life issues. Each move has compromises. Wow what a awesome post IMO! I was in a similar situation as OP but I have 2 small kids and we're moving back to a HCOL area (Southern California) after living in Houston, TX for 4 years. I probably posted similar threads myself because it was a constant struggle trying to figure out what is the best ...

Is this the right way to unclog a sink?
My Masterbath sink (my side of course not the wifey) is starting to clog. I rather not use Drano or any strong chemicals to unclog the sink.
I found this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7kE8JN7t4c which is basically removing the goose neck and clean the pipe from there.
Is this right?

Re: Planning to move out of state, when should I start submitting resume?
I definitely do need a job before moving to California. I can move ahead of my family. My concern with this option is leaving the wife alone. I would have to secure from the new employer a week off for me to return and finish the move.

Planning to move out of state, when should I start submitting resume?
I'm planning to move back to my home state of S. California with my wife, 2 kids and one small chihuahua :D and I just got a resume request from the recruiter of a company where my old coworkers are now working at. There are several concerns I need to figure out before I submit my resume. 1. I like my current job and there is a small 40/60 possibility to work from home 100%. Not sure when to ask because when I do and if they say no then I may be out of a job 2. Havn't sold the house yet but in preparation 3. Don't want to interrupt our current health coverage. One of my kid needs to see a specialist every 3 months. New job in CA may not offer immediate coverage and I looked at the Marketplace the plans have high deductible and I won't be ab...
