Another option is to live along the route of one of the green minibuses that serves Central or another MTR station. Our place is adjacent to the terminus of a minibus route whose other end is near Causeway Bay MTR. Works great.

My experience is outside the US, but in every university I've recently been associated with there are stringent checks, both automated and human, on fulfillment of graduation requirements.
