The best answer is that it's not going to make nearly as much of a difference as your savings rate. Choose the path that you will find easiest to stick with and focus on saving more. Started doing the same last year except monthly. Stopped after a few months because of the "noise". Plan to do it annually like you as we go forward. Quick and easy way to track progress IMO.

Right. Age alone wouldn't kill an extended business cycle. It's almost like flipping a coin. If you land on heads 10 times in a row you'll start thinking more and more that your next flip has to be tails. No one knows what will happen.

The 2019 Self-only HSA contribution limit is $3,500. So I'm assuming your HDHP covers DW/family as well since you mention an amount of $5,000 you can contribute. The HSA I have through my employer is with Optum, employer pays the account fee. The investment options and expense ratios are reasonable....

Basic financial literacy should absolutely be required as a part of a high school education. I've never used algebra or geometry in my job.
