Re: Acura RDX vs Audi Q5

We've had an 2007 Acura RDX Tech (AWD) and currently have an 2011 Acura RDX Tech (FWD). These were both in the same (or similar) generation. Both were terrific cars. We recently traded in the 2007 at about 128K miles. We had virtually no problems with either car. I found them to be a great luxury va...

Re: New Subaru Outback Engine Offering for 2020

We purchased a 2019 Outback Touring 3.6 about a month ago. Absolutely love the vehicle. We researched and considered the 2020. They had some nice deals to start clearing the 2019s off the lot. In addition, my wife had a preference for the look of the 2019 over the 2020. I'll bet your engine would be...

Thoughts on moving law practice?

I'm a junior partner at a "midsize" law firm (between 250-500 attorneys) and am very happy with my life and my practice. I received an unsolicited offer from a small (and very well regarded) law firm in my city. I currently make $265,000 (base and bonus) this year and can reasonably expect to make $...

Re: Am I saving enough in kids 529 plan?

I like your plan and think you are on the right track. I'm similarly situated (putting in $350 per month per kid, plus any birthday presents, etc., contributing at least $4,200 per year). I'm not sure that it will cover everything, but I think it will provide a nice base for college. I am also nearl...

Re: Considering Quitting Job - Seeking Advice. Would you do it?

OP, When I typically see these types of posts, my first instinct is always that the poster should gut it out and make it to the finish line. You're post was different. That kind of schedule can be done in spurts, but I can't imagine being able to manage that consistently. If I were in your position ...

Re: How much do bogleheads save in 529?

We have two kids and contribute $350 per month in each kid's 529 account. We started doing this in the first month they were born. The funds are invested aggressively in S&P 500 index funds. (I screwed this up early on by trying to do market timing, but I believe that I have learned from my mistakes...

Re: New book based on Millionaire Next Door

Thank you for sharing this. I really enjoyed these books...certainly the first two anyway.

I'm surprised to see this new title, as I believe that Mr. Stanley died a few years ago in a car accident. This leads me to question how good this new title will be, but I'll certainly check it out.

Re: Borrow for BigLaw Partnership Buy-in?

Thanks all for your thoughts on this. The upside of the $150K is difficult to quantify. It allows me to participate proportionately in the profits of the firm for so long as I'm a productive partner. I guess I've always viewed it as something that is necessary in order to maintain my financial earni...

Re: Borrow for BigLaw Partnership Buy-in?

Thanks for the responses all. You're correct that if the firm doesn't hit budget, I would need to come up with the substantial annual payment for that year on my own. Excellent thought on increasing my emergency fund accordingly. On the question regarding my overall financial picture, it's generally...

Re: Ireland trip

We enjoyed our trip to Ireland, which was about six years ago. We purchased a Rick Steve's travel guide, which was very much worth it. We found it to be a very friendly country and easy to get from place to place. It was my first experience driving in a foreign country and it took a day to get used ...

Borrow for BigLaw Partnership Buy-in?

Dear all--I appreciate your consideration of this long post. I'm a junior partner at a large, national law firm that has been around for a long time. As the next level of promotion, I'll become an equity partner and will be asked to contribute a substantial amount of capital (approximately $150,000)...
