Re: Problem with balances on Vanguard Site

I’ve noticed on my personal Vanguard page that the outside investments listed (in this case a Roth IRA from Fidelity) is showing a closing price still from Wednesday ?? (it’s now Saturday morning). I’ve never noticed a delay before in the Fidelity listing. In fact, the day’s closing price I think has always been listed immediately. Vanguard funds readjust overnight, however, I know. Wonder if anyone else has noticed something similar ? Thanks ! This is your Vanguard's Yodlee service failing to update? Incidentally I don't know even know if Vanguard is still using Yodlee; I'm just assuming it is. Re: Lost 1 million ! Any body else in same boat ? Looking for some reassurance

Here are a few thoughts for perspective: 1. You still have five million dollars in your portfolio. Yes, five million dollars. You also, according to prior posts, will receive a pension and social security you will receive and a paid-off home worth at least $1 million. That level of wealth is sufficient for any reasonable person to enjoy a luxurious retirement. 2. VTSAX was $95.15 at market close on Friday. VTSAX was $95.21 at market close on January 27 of last year. So assuming that you were 100% VTSAX, all that has happened is that you have given back the unrealized gains from the past sixteen months or so. Even with this years market decline VTSAX still has an average annual return of over ten percent (10%) for the past ten years. 3. You...

Eligible to convert Traditional to Roth IRA ?

Thanks in advance for any guidance here : I have a sister who maxes out her 401k, but she makes too much money to contribute to a Roth IRA.
My question is, can she still contribute the full amount to a tIRA (I believe she wouldn’t be able to deduct it, again because of her salary) and then convert it to a Roth ?
Or if not, can she still at least contribute to the tIRA (but maybe what’s the point if she doesn’t get the deduction ??).

I appreciate the help !

Re: Advice needed regarding my wife’s Vanguard PAS account

Thanks Celia —- yeah, this “kid” wasn’t responsible for setting up my wife’s plan, I’m sure he was just reading the screen and my understanding there is a general template that is followed with PAS (plus her amount invested isn’t enough for a dedicated advisor, so another call would probably be automatically with a different person at Vanguard). And so if the Kitces article is referring to a tIRA, then it doesn’t really apply to her situation, correct ? PAS has her exclusively in International Bonds in her Roth, and though it’s not a lot of money ($2500), my concern is that any future deposits in Roth would also go to International Bonds and that doesn’t sound like what I’ve heard recommended —— Roths are just filled with Total stock and To...

Re: Advice needed regarding my wife’s Vanguard PAS account

Hello all, . . . they invested her $2500 Roth IRA into their International Bond fund . . . While there is a bit of a debate when it comes to "stocks in taxable and bonds in an IRA" (learn more here: https://www.kitces.com/blog/asset-location-for-stocks-in-a-brokerage-account-versus-ira-depends-on-time-horizon/), your instinct serves you right. As you know, Roth accounts can be distributed tax-free. Therefore, we want those accounts to grow the most. That makes a strong case for investing in only stocks in those accounts. This can apply to HSAs as well - those accounts can similarly be distributed tax-free. Therefore, it can make sense to only hold stocks in HSAs. The problem is that - while you know the answer - getting someone t...

Does anyone know with PAS, since you can opt in or out at any time, plus you can give Vanguard all or a portion to control, would they also look at assets not under their management when balancing out the portfolio ? e.g. my wife wants to control her Roth someday, do they look at that when determining her other asset balances though they don’t have the ability to change the Roth ?

Thanks Celia —— actually, she first set up her PAS on her own. When they sent her the plan she “OK”d it without asking my opinion —- and she is a real newbie in this area, was more interested in getting it done with and handing it off. When I asked her later if I could take a look she obliged, and the fund placement in the Roth caught my attention. She made an appointment for us both to talk to the advisor, really me with her just on the line. I asked about the Roth and the guy gave an answer, but frankly I didn’t understand it or question him. But he also seemed to be unaware about how spousal IRAs work, that you can technically use the money of either spouse, so just made me wonder a little about his bonds in Roth explanation (though I ge...

Hello all, Thanks in advance for any advice you give. The situation is that my wife recently opened up a PAS account with Vanguard. For one thing, they invested her $2500 Roth IRA into their International Bond fund, which I don’t get. I’m suggesting to her that she put it in probably the S&P 500 fund, and tell Vanguard to not hold that under PAS, that she can take it over (leaving it alone until retirement years). I say S&P because they are putting her in these “total” funds —— International Stock, Bond, and International Bond —- plus the extended market fund. So, I’m assuming the only non-Vanguard fund they still have to transition over —-Putnam Multi Cap Core Class A —- they’ll put in Vanguard S&P 500, since “extended” covers...

While I personally prefer to eschew the "all-in-one" fund approach in favor of a two, three or four-fund portfolio, for those investors who are not comfortable with a completely DIY approach, the "all-in-one" fund is IMO the next best option. It is much less costly than VPAS but provides most of the same benefits. And according to the reports I have read, Vanguard PAS is not going to tax-manage her account or do tax-loss harvesting anyway.
Thanks, Galawdawg. The ball is already rolling, funds purchased separately through VPAS, but I know what you mean about the benefits of “all in one”

I get your point about involvement, TJ, thanks. She does respect my opinion but has hired Vanguard. Like is mentioned downthread though, it’s not generic concern about international bonds, it was the placement in a Roth that caught my attention. And I know it’s comparatively not a lot of money, but I was questioning wondering if they’d be putting 7k in international bonds every year for the Roth —— not what I thought was recommended.
Anyway, yes, they’re the experts.

Spousal IRA (Roth) question

Hi,
Had a question about a Roth Spousal IRA for my wife. She hasn’t been working this year, but I have and have made enough to cover IRAs for both of us. She’s in the process of transferring her investments through a local bank over to Vanguard (Personal Advisory Services). The vast majority of what she has is inherited, in a non-retirement account.
My question is : can she open a Spousal Roth IRA with some of that money herself, or does it have to come somehow literally from the employed spouse, my, accounts/paycheck, etc. ?

Thanks for the community’s assistance, as always ! Much appreciated.

Yes, since I’ve only, to this point, dealt with accumulating in a tax deferred account, it’s the selling that makes me a little nervous at the moment. Making the right choices in prioritizing what to sell and not bumping up to a different tax bracket by miscalculation.
That’s why I think I’m leaning towards PAS at least now for non-retirement stuff.

Re: Vanguard PAS catch 22/conundrum —— advice ?

If you want to end up in a single life strategy or target date fund then it would be better to go from the current portfolio to that directly, rather than make a stop in index funds. There would be nothing wrong with staying in the index funds, of course. There would be almost no managing to do. Every few years check whether you still had the stock to bond ratio you wanted and adjust if not. This is very easy and not worth paying 0.3% of assets to avoid. Post the portfolio, current value and basis for the holdings and the board will advise you about what to sell. In your tax bracket you can sell some of it with no taxes due. Thanks afan —— I was thinking “one fund of fund is easier for her, who wouldn’t want to look at it for years”, but I...

Yes Tibbits, that was what I was thinking, thanks.
Basically, I just want to get her out of all these different funds/stocks from all locations,
Consolidate them at probably Vanguard with low fees, etc.
She’s not going to want to touch it till she needs the $, and frankly I’ll want to deal with it as little as possible too once it’s at a brokerage.
I guess leaving it forever in PAS would be an option if there would be significant costs to put everything eventually in a “fund of funds” ?

Vanguard PAS catch 22/conundrum —— advice ?

Related to an earlier thread of mine, I was thinking of setting my wife up at Vanguard with PAS —— to get her out of her local bank connected to Pershing (soon to be LPL Financial) for her inherited taxable account. Problem is, ideally we were thinking something like a target date fund, but won’t PAS basically break that into its parts ? I was thinking ok well she can someday (after the separate stocks and funds presently meld into some broad index funds at Vanguard) further downsize to a LifeStrategy or Target Date and ditch the PAS. Then I realized, won’t that be a taxable event again to consolidate that way because these were from an inherited taxable brokerage account ? Would it be better to just stick with PAS indefinitely then, if she...

The former has tax consequences for selling the current assets; the latter doesn’t.

She can transfer the assets in-kind to a brokerage like Vanguard, Schwab, or Fidelity and then devise a plan to sell taking into account any tax consequences.
Thanks defamer, it is a taxable account. I guess I’d be in charge of selling what when. Feeling a little inexperienced about that, would it make sense to use PAS at Vanguard temporarily till her investments are better consolidated ?

Re: Should my wife stay with her advisor and firm?

I’ve been using a simple 3 fund portfolio for years now —- 403 and Roth —— and my nature is to suggest my wife move her few hundred thousand inherited dollars to something simple like a Vanguard Target Date or Life Strategy fund. Not paying middlemen !? Her advisor is at a local bank which currently partners with Pershing but will be changing over to LPL Financial in the near future. It looks like she has a mix of stocks and funds ( Pfizer, Boeing, Emerson Electric, Exxon—Putnam multi-cap core, a money market—— a few others) Investing through a bank is always expensive because the bank gets a cut along with the advisor and his company. You didn't mention the Putnam find name, but do you known the expense ratio? Is it a load fund? I could b...

It looks like she has a mix of stocks and funds ( Pfizer, Boeing, Emerson Electric, Exxon—Putnam multi-cap core, a money market—— a few others) I could be more specific if needed, but my inclination is for her to simplify in one or 2 funds, directly at a Vanguard or Fidelity. Is this a good idea at this point, financially ? We’re both in our early 50s. In the 1...

I have to laugh because if it was important, then I think you would have done:

+1.0 -- agree ....

yarnandthread wrote: Wed Apr 07, 2021 7:40 am Yes, the breakdowns are more specific and detailed now than before with regards to cap. weights and sector percentages. That is good.

The bad: what I do not like is the lack of precision in regards to the asset allocation....whole numbers only?? I liked the old way of having a decimal point and the number to the nearest tenth. That was useful to me. I hope they can bring that back!

Re: Vanguard Portfolio Watch has a new look

My numbers were off —- 7% more bonds than yesterday !? But beforehand I had to input my Vanguard 403b (non-profit) again in “outside investments” since their “403b”s are technically held at Newport Group, and it otherwise wouldn’t be included.

So I just deleted the 403b as an outside investment and now the stock/bond ratio is more what I expected.
Sound right ? Anyone else have this experience ? (Before I get into a long on-hold with Vanguard)

Re: Asset Allocation in Roth IRA

My understanding, yes —- better to hold bands in tax-advantaged than taxable.
But within tax-advantaged, better to hold bonds in a 401k/403b over a Roth IRA since the Roth will grow tax free (taxes there were already paid) and bonds are less likely to grow as much over time as stocks are.
