Re: Google Wifi Mesh 2 Pack vs. TP Link Deco 3 Pack

@ louiethelillac "Yes I see that I can get the Orbi (2 units) for $149 at Costco. Would this be a step up in terms of reliability and coverage vs. Google?" This is my own experience of the switch to tri-band MESH using the 2 unit ORBI: On Friday I took the plunge and bought the 2-unit Netgear ORBI R...

Re: IRS CP2000 notice -- hard lesson (missing cost basis)

They treated it as if $50k magically popped into my account when the reality was, there was essentially no substantial gain on the bond fund over those years. But to make it all more confusing, IRS also had some odd gains numbers for several other trades I'd made in my Taxable account, despite the s...

IRS CP2000 notice -- hard lesson (missing cost basis)

Just passing along wisdom gained after bumpy-dealings w IRS over long-ago unreported cost basis that came back to bite. The long & short of it: - About 6 years ago I inherited $50k in Vanguard S/T federal bond fund in a RayJames brokerage account in my name - I later transferred the fund from RayJam...

Re: Tax: Roth conv implications of NQ wdrawal from 529

OP here: GuyInFL, thanks. Curious what you mean by "You can have the funds distributed to you or your sons, so consider the tax brackets". For a given 529, I'm principal owner, with 1 son registered. Are you saying my son can do the withdrawal in his name and thereby take the tax consequences in his...

OP here: marcopolo, it's (1). The total is $23k. Of that amount only a modest portion represents CapGain. Thanks for the concise answer - most helpful. ps: Why didn't we use 529 money to pay the school rather than accepting Federal loans ? It's complicated: I actually did empty one kid's 529; the ot...

Tax: Roth conv implications of NQ wdrawal from 529

Fellow BHs - I'm seeking advice on potential tax considerations when making 2 separate financial moves. 1. The first move involves withdrawal of 529 Plan funds. Both my post-college sons took subsidized Federal student loans. I now want to use remaining 529 funds to help pay down those loans. Howeve...

I'm a relatively new arrival to BH and have learned a lot from many of you. For me, Nisiprius stands out as someone who makes the effort to post well written, informative (data-backed) and respectful replies.

As a long time searcher for real black licorice -- not the sugary, anise flavored stuff we call licorice in the US -- I second the suggestion to try Amarelli black licorice from Italy. It is THE real deal, i.e., 100 % licorice. What I'd add is that you take a look at the https://www.licoriceinternat...

not usual but last year we went a non-electronic route ==> new mattress set + protective cover. Got us an added bump below typical sale cost on a moderately pricey item.

Re: How likely is it for a corporate bond rated BAA3/BBB to fail?

I just looked into this recently because several Vanguard bond index funds include roughly 20-25% BBB rated bonds. The best answer I got is from an NYU - Stern study: http://people.stern.nyu.edu/ealtman/AboutCorporateDefaultRates.pdf . See Table 15.5, which compares numbers from Moody's, S&P and Alt...

I faced the same question: whether to plonk down $99 for a new Brother cartridge, buy a much cheaper non-Brother cartridge OR go the route of doing my own toner refill of used Brother cartridges. Cut to the chase: I've had good success with toner refills (New Era Toner, see Amazon) of my empty Broth...
