Truthfully didn't know you could still fax through phone lines. I worked in the copier/printer/fax industry up until 2013...even back then they were talking about how the analog lines used for faxing were no longer supported by telephone companies and aging out.

We use rightfax, but it's through the internet. Not sure if they have a phone line option?

Re: Do you tip hotel staff when checking out?

I leave cash with a note so that it's obvious whom it is for when I have my room cleaned, which may be every other day for longer stay, and on the last day. $5 - $10 for the "daily" cleaning, likely $10 when I travel with my family since likely with young kids we make more messes. I usually leave more on checkout day, e.g. $15-$20. I now purposely carries fives and tens when I'm staying at a hotel for this purpose (in general I don't carry much cash with me). The housekeeping staff are most of then the "forgotten" staff of the hotel. They're unseen and un-tipped. Commonly people tip the bell person, the vallet parking attendants, the room-service attendants, because they're there and expect tips. The housekeeping staff ...

I strongly disagree with the myth that in order to be successful, you have to get a college degree. If that were true, then Bill Gates would be a failure. My second oldest nephew graduated from Eau Claire with a BA in Marketing and still cannot find work. Save the money and let your daughter succeed or fail. I'm in agreement (regarding college might be a waste of money and time unless going for STEM degree). Business? Marketing? Just find a job in a field you like and gain experience that way. I went to community college first year - almost failed out, then went to a 4 year state school and graduated in 5 with a Communications degree with (barely) a 3.0 GPA. I ended up in sales making $80K-$130K and later in life (late 30's) starting my fi...

To answer your specific question...when we hit NW of 1M I finally took a deep breath. This happened when I was just shy of 40, and DW was 35.

DW has always been much more focused on her health as she stays home with the kids and has done an excellent job sticking to a strict exercise schedule. Now in my early 40s and another 500k on the NW statement, I've forced myself to work a little less and carve out at least 4 good workouts/week while reducing some sodium intake.

My state farm home owners policy jumped 50% this year and 50% the year prior. I live in urban coastal area with no flood or fire risk. I was speaking with my agent recently and she told me they have a customer whose premium is going from 4k to 19k a year. I assume person lives in high fire risk area. We are in the Midwest, so also not in a wildfire or flooding area, but have seen double digit increases on homeowners insurance the past two years on both primary and vacation house. We have had a LOT of hail recently. Way more than I can ever remember. The storm-chasing roofers come out of the woodwork after each one. Re: Drop Homeowner Ins- Self Insure

I would shop around, but I would not cancel. And I can't speak to American Family, but I know for a fact that State Farm would cancel my Umbrella policy if I dropped homeowners. A minimum coverage level for both auto and home is a prerequisite for an umbrella policy. Understood, my umbrella policy should cover liability and flooding isn’t an issue. Hail is for sure a concern but a new roof is around $15k in my area, that’s definitely a risk I would be taking. Be very careful here. An Umbrella policy is by definition an excess liability policy. It excludes a minimum level of liability. So even if AF doesn't drop you entirely, you may still be liable for whatever that minimum is, before they'll even take your phone call. For me that'd be $30...

Re: Homeowner's Insurance - Amount of coverage for structure?

Depending on your state, your homeowners policy might include Option ID, which kicks in extra coverage above your policy in the event of a total loss. Do you have this? If so, those two numbers need to be added together to give you your actual total loss amount.

Also, it's unlikely that doubling your structural coverage will double your premium. Contents, liability, etc are already factored into your base premium. What did your agent say it would cost to increase coverage?

I'd guess that most of the $3,500 is tax, not penalty -- you owed the tax either way. Unless the payroll department used incorrect tables for your W4 submission, they are off the hook (and may be anyway). How much is the penalty (less the interest you earned on the unpaid taxes)? I do get it that its taxes owed and not a penalty. And I in fact filed my W-4 as MFJ w/0 deductions and kept a copy of it for my own records. And seriously, how does a payroll company use incorrect tax tables? Because they don't know how much you and your spouse make at the other job. They're extrapolating your income based on this single job and doing the withholding accordingly. You are responsible for adjusting your withholding as necessary to compensate. This ...

No because this is taken care of by the underlying auto policy. Umbrella has nothing to do with this case or all but .001% of cases.
I'm not being clear on my point, apparently. A car accident with no serious injury resulted in a $500k lawsuit. How much would that suit be if the other party were actually hurt? Actually couldn't work. Actually had big medical bills. Actually had a kid in the car with them.

OP- your insurance company has this. You need not worry.
Would it be pasted in the section that says "No you don't REALLY need an umbrella policy"? It seems that if the brother/nephew in this case had $500k in auto liability plus a $1MM umbrella policy, then the claim would be for $1.5MM.
Are you in the no umbrella camp? You do realize you don't automatically get sued for your max policy limits, right?

OP- you've done a nice job laying out your point(and defending it). Thank you.

This thread has been a good read and helped shore up some AA questions I had lingering.

Cheers to BHs :beer

That is why having a plan B is important. A stock market crash emergency fund of at least 2 years will sustain you if you loose your job as a result of a recession. Most bear markets on average last 18 months. Right. It's the opportunity cost of that money sitting in an EF that people on this post have issue with. Me included. I will agree that for people in vulnerable positions who think it would be difficult to find work if they were laid off, they should have a healthy EF. Others, as OP has pointed out can take more risk if they are less likely to be out of work for a long time. I work in a sales-based industry, and have through dotcom, GFC, Covid...nobody I know that's good at what we do was ever out of work, let alone for an extended ...
