I use the iMac + iPad. I have been using Apple computers for over 30 years; my primary work is software development. I stopped using a laptop. If I am working, I use the iMac. I upgraded the ram myself. If I am reading, etc., I use the iPad. The scroll reading feature for iBooks and Kindle are great...

When testing a new device/workflow, you should check the return policies of BestBuy, Apple, etc. You can then get the device and test it during the return period. Actually using the device will be the best way to determine if it satisfies or improves your workflow needs.

To evaluate any technology, I would recommend focusing on what you plan to do with it. If you surf the web, social media, send emails and listen to music, then almost any computer for sale today can handle your needs (unless you plan to have 45 tabs open in chrome :happy).
