Re: I'm about to inherit a single stock with a worth of just over 7 figures....

The only reason to hold onto a concentrated stock position is to avoid paying capital gains taxes during your lifetime so that you can pass on to your children with a step up in basis. And this is exactly what your dad did. In effect, he took on the risk of the concentrated stock position during his lifetime so that you can now sell without paying the capital gains that he would have had to pay. In a sense, to not sell now would be to squander the risk that your father took. That's just an unconventional, but not irrational, way of looking at this. P.S. to OP: Investorpeter is spot on. As a former professor of mine put it: "Or you can do the ultimate in proper tax planning: You die. Your heirs get a stepped-up basis, AND you avoid hav...

Re: Watch Collection Reasonable or Unreasonable or Irresponsible?

I have a wrist Watch collection valued at conservatively $80,000. Ive just turned 40, so I'm getting more serious about retirement investing and personal responsibility, etc. Should I be concerned to the point I should sell some of them? I've built them up over years and years and really enjoy them. I'm 40, wife is 36- no children yet. Combined household gross about $125K. No debts whatsoever, no mortgages. We own our primary and get $650/mo rent from our rental. Cash Savings $52,000, some is savings for another rental. Retirement accounts total $184,000. This is my first year of Roth IRA :( Looking for opinions on if this is out of balance or workable? Just found this forum, love it! Thanks everyone, wow what a vibrant forum community. I ...

Re: Ratio of CDs to Bonds

Is there a rule of thumb ratio for CDs to bond funds in your total fixed income allocation? Thanks DAve In a word, no. It all depends. Are you within a year of retiring early under the age of 50 and working toward managing your SRR? That might yield one answer. Are you in your 30s and thinking you'll be buying your first home in the next 2-5 years? That yields a different answer. Are you in your mid-70s with a portfolio of X and anticipated expenses of Y in the upcoming 2 years? That yields a different answer. Bottom line: When it comes to each portion (and sub-portion) of your AA, the key is to know WHY it's there. That will make it easy to make the appropriate adjustments when the underling "why" changes. Please share more of t...

Re: I'm about to inherit a single stock with a worth of just over 7 figures....

I let my emotions get the best of me and I agree that selling the stock is the correct route to take......I used to tell my Parents that they were taking a huge risk holding all this stock in one company. I guess I knew the correct answer all along. Thanks for the advice. I'm sorry for your loss, OP. :( Please bear in mind that it's not an all-or-nothing decision. Given that emotion is what makes us human and fulfilled, no need to apologize for being human! For all the reasons stated - and that you wisely tried to convince your parents of! - as you've recognized, you DO likely need to sell most of that position at your hopefully-stepped up basis, and diversify that holding. BTW, that's assuming it would represent a significant % of your po...

There was an interesting thread on Reddit recently with this same question. I was wondering what you folks think.

It's a great question, OP. Anyone on this forum has probably thought about this at some point. I'm no exception. I'll show you mine if you'll show me yours:

What do YOU think? How would YOU respond to your own question in the thread title? If you're not willing to share your own position before asking for others' on this sensitive topic, well..
