If you are trying to FIRE then SS should be in the back of the train, just some extra gravy on top..SS is a bonus at that point, and in the best scenario, SS is not even needed and may not ever be taken...

Re: Could I be financially independent in 4-5 years?
you do not need 25, 30, 35X your expenses if you just want to cut back on work and hours or just do work for fun... But you need enough to know that you can go 5 years without working and after that still be in a good position. I really do not like the Retire Early part of FIRE, it is a confusing thing and so many people don't understand it, you can totally be FIRE and have a job, look for paid gigs, sell things you make.... "RE" Recreational Employment is a much better term and is understood by more. I would consider anyone FIRE with 10X proposed future expenses invested.. plus there are many steps to FI. Youtube "10 Levles of Financial Independence and Early Retirement" by Next Level Life... That is a good track to see...

hopefully in your 30's you figure it out and can catch up and on what you missed and or at least improve your future to a better outcome... if you learn in your 20's even better and if you were taught or learned before 20 then that's the best, if you miss it and go past 40.. there is still time, but its going to take a lot of effort and sacrifice.

I could put that in MM accounts and only earn 2% over all and I would quit my job. 2% is still 3X what I will need to live abroad.
But if i was ever this lucky, I would probably put it into Vanguard Life Income fund.

Worst case is we all have no money like 95% of the rest of the worlds population.. it's ok to be poor and have nothing, many many many people have done it in the past and will continue to do it in the future.. My neighbors here in Honduras live with a dirt floor and wood panel windows, and their children run around naked as they throw rocks and sticks at the stray animals.

Re: Are Airport Lounges Worth the Money?
I typically rely on the airline lounges.. flying business and first or earning your way up the frequent flyer ranks is the best way to use lounges, and yes lounges are totally worth it! There is no where to escape from the hustle and bustle of an airport except for lounges..
But if you were to use a c/card for access that could pay off better as you could fly economy and still have access because you are that c/card holder.
and you are also correct, you need to be flying and using lounges at least 3/4 times a year to make it really worth the efforts.
Edit** lounges are a huge part of making international travel much much better..

I think some read your post wrong. It seem the 50K in cash is spoken for and will be used within 5 years.. You are good where you are. But make sure your EF is in a separate account alone. You could even set up another account just for your short and mid term use goals. I do the same. I have an account for soon to be visa payment and travel set up costs, an account for one year future expenses, and an account for what could be considered an EF acccout, not any months worth of expenses, but an amount for worst case scenario situation.
Better late then never!! keep it going and you will be fine.

If you retire in the right area, you can toss away a car all together.. and who needs tons of clothes.. a few tshirts, pants, shorts and one or two dress up type outfits for events. And if you move for retirement you can possibly get rid of heat or cooling costs.. And if you retire abroad, you just cut all costs in half in many locations..

Re: Can Low income ppl become millionaire? [Hong Kong]
Yes you can, Get rid of that Debt as soon as possible and then keep investing. If you continue to put $9,000 into a 8% average return from age 28 to 65 you could have near 1.8 Million.. it is all about keeping it going no matter what. there is no fast way to wealth. If you take all the years to age 65 to save, save, save and invest, you will be rewarded. And in all the years ahead you will earn more and then save and invest more.
Never quit or sell!! keep pushing forward.
FYI $9,000 each year for 37 years...... @ 7% average could be 1.4 Million and @ 6% average could be 1.1 Million...

I think it should be the goal to have SS as small as it may be, to be able to cover as much as possible of basic budget needs.. if one can over most or all of that, then the portfolios are just gravy and allow to live so much more with the safety net provided by SS...
Problem is most people have to do this without the portfolio in their back pocket.. which is not a good situation.

You can roll it into the next 5 year or 10 year Target Date Fund.. then let it go back down to that 50/50 split at the new year fund... Drop it into a 2025 fund and let that ride.. or just leave it... or put it into a fund that stays a certain AA that fits your goals needs.

Diversity to me means being invested globally, across all sectors of industry, in equities and fixed income sources.. The level of diversity is up to the investor..
Even if you just had single stock and bonds and a few rentals.. you could be very diversified as long as you had a few stocks from each sector, a few different bond types/duration's, and maybe rentals in a couple areas of one state or multiple states (or even countries)
Not Diversified is buying only a lot of companies in the same industry... or buying into 4 mutual funds all in the same classification... That is not diversity....

I do not think in either outcome you will have second thoughts.. But think about what the different paths look like for the next 5 years and what that can lead to.

If you put in 50 and it goes to 100 then down to 60, you still win...
if you put in 50 and it goes up to 100 and then down to 49 or less, then that would be a loss in my opinion.

everyone here need to stop believing that..... Retirement = no earned income.... That is not true, sure some may really never work again or earn money, but most and even MMM are able to do whatever they want which in most cases creates income... When we "retire early" we really mean that we are not dependent on someone else to provide... we choose how we work, where, when, why and with who.. no one to answer to unless we choose too... we are buying our freedom at a youthful time.. not slaving for 50 years for pennies when we are old and sick.... What will I do? As to today, I have 7 years to hit my numbers of... FI Survival : 254K FI Flexible : 354K FI Complete : 669K FI Abundance : 1.750M I will let my portfolio ride in my Target Date until it nears 60/40, which then I will hold at that AA via Vanguard Life (60/40) I will be around age 46 at that point. Shooting for FI Complete, but Flexible would be ok as well, at that time (if it takes all 7) I will have 3 years left to use my GI Bill.. So I will do that somewhere for something that is fun, because the degree is not needed, but something I need to use or lose.. everyone here need to stop believing that..... So silly that people crap on bloggers that retired early and then write about it.. "ohhh he is not retired!" "ohh he earns this and that from his site/podcast!"... blaa...
