hopefully in your 30's you figure it out and can catch up and on what you missed and or at least improve your future to a better outcome... if you learn in your 20's even better and if you were taught or learned before 20 then that's the best, if you miss it and go past 40.. there is still time, but...

I could put that in MM accounts and only earn 2% over all and I would quit my job. 2% is still 3X what I will need to live abroad.

But if i was ever this lucky, I would probably put it into Vanguard Life Income fund.

If I was making 435K and I had a partner that earned 200K, I would be inclined to save 400K minimum a year.. cause who can not live nice on 100K+?

make it a 3 fund and keep it really simple, 500 Index, Developed Market, and Inter. Bonds, just pick you AA of each and let it ride, the 500 is [very close to -- moderator oldcomputerguy] the total market anyway..

Just try to set up a life that needs less then your portfolio earns every year.. and a portfolio big enough that you can take some eggs away during the down years... keep spending down if you are just a regular person with less than 2 Million in the end...

I agree with the person above about debt, pay it all off if you have any.. then you could bump up your Emergency fund a bit if you want.

The rest,, Max out a Roth IRA or 2 if you are married, then enjoy a little of it and put the rest in the market.

You can roll it into the next 5 year or 10 year Target Date Fund.. then let it go back down to that 50/50 split at the new year fund... Drop it into a 2025 fund and let that ride.. or just leave it... or put it into a fund that stays a certain AA that fits your goals needs.

An EF is a good idea when you dont have a lot of money, once you get into the 500K+ in your investments, you can very likely lose that extra cash just sitting... its just like insurance, the more $$ you have the less you need it.

Note** That the monthly living allowance is only paid while in school (NO payment for summer vacations/between semesters) and that the payment is reduced for part-time students and even less for on-line students.

Diversity to me means being invested globally, across all sectors of industry, in equities and fixed income sources.. The level of diversity is up to the investor.. Even if you just had single stock and bonds and a few rentals.. you could be very diversified as long as you had a few stocks from each...

with ER's like that and not really nice options in your 401K, do you really need a 401K? You could go with a RothIRA with someone and then just pound the rest into a taxable account. That is what I do, plus I do not have a 401K option at all.

I see it only a real loss if you are less than you have personally invested.. not growth...

If you put in 50 and it goes to 100 then down to 60, you still win...

if you put in 50 and it goes up to 100 and then down to 49 or less, then that would be a loss in my opinion.

I would not file with IL, you are more like on a term stay with the option to stay with a job offer... you have not really shown intent to be a resident..

You also would not be present in IL for 183 days...

My 4 Fund portfolio is only down -7.68% as of yesterday.. almost a correction but not quite... haha, but I need a good dip now and into next year, I got a large $$$ pile to dump into the market next year, I need low prices now for the better of the future..

How long till retirement? The Target may be the only one you need as it will get down to 60/40 in time.. and when it nears that you can then swap into a 60/40 permanent AA.. I am doing the same, I want 60/40 at a certain age, so I chose a lesser TDF and will swtich over to a 60/40 fixed at that time...

A reason why many of us do not use the word "retire" when we talk in our communities and with people who we talk with.. Retire has just a way with the minds after a lengthy brainwashing of definition... FIRO "retire optional" might be better, but does not have that marketing power of FIRE... hahaha ...

What will I do? As to today, I have 7 years to hit my numbers of... FI Survival : 254K FI Flexible : 354K FI Complete : 669K FI Abundance : 1.750M I will let my portfolio ride in my Target Date until it nears 60/40, which then I will hold at that AA via Vanguard Life (60/40) I will be around age 46 ...

Depends on when you want to walk away from having to work.. I plan to quit at 40 yrs old.. 6 years away.. (or less) I only have a RothIRA, so I max that out. All my main $ is in my Vanguard Account, the IRA will be bonus later in life when I hit 59.5. So if you plan to walk away from work prior to 5...
