Re: Optimization & can we retire in 2 years.
Thank you to all the replies and guidance. Looks like the healthcare and tax costs are what I need to drill down and clarify. Will be seeing what the AGI is expected to be and the Roth conversion vs ACA subsidy tradeoff. With the possibility or relocation to Europe in the future (some countries do not recognize Roth for tax purposes) is another consideration. Leaning towards no conversion at this point and getting AGI low. Someone said I want to be not so low as to end up on Medicaid (which would be MediCal in CA), but why? Is Medicaid actually worse than a low tier bronze plan? I'd suggest doing a real scrub on your budget to understand if everything is including in the $75k. Taxes, healthcare costs, increased travel, lumpy expenses like c...

Optimization & can we retire in 2 years.
We are ages 40 and 41, hoping to be able to quit working in 2 years if we choose to. VHCOL area with rent control, no plans to move. No kids. No car. No debt. Current portfolio value: $2.1 million Current Income: $300k/yr gross Tax Status: Married Filing Jointly; Tax Rate 24% Federal, 9.3% State (CA) Annual Spend: ~$75k (of which $29.3k is rent/all utilities/cell service/renters insurance) Goal portfolio value: $2.5 million Withdrawal Rate: 3.25% for a total of $81,250 available per year (conservative withdrawal rate due to conservative asset allocation) I don't know how to estimate the tax situation really. If I put $81,250 into a calculator assuming worst case scenario somehow that all of it is 100% taxable, the CA tax would be ~$1.5k/yea...

IRS DirectPay delay?
I made a DirectPay payment for $2,000 on January 27, 2022. I was overpaying with the intent to then get a $5,000 refund in I Bonds. I have since changed my mind and just want the whole refund deposited in my bank account. Today when I log into the IRS Online account the payment is still showing as "pending". The money was taken out of my bank account on January 27, 2022. I want to go ahead and file my taxes but am afraid that if I file them before this payment shows as complete that this will cause issues (like the IRS giving me a $3k refund when it should be $5k). Any idea on how long it will take to move from pending to complete? Thanks!

Re: Italian traffic ticket from 2017 now with attempt to collect in 2021
Italy (traffic enforcement) does this a lot for Americans. They simply created a debt caused by you allegedly committing some infraction, then sold the debt at a discount to the USA based collection agency. Italy doesn’t know/doesn’t care if you pay the USA based collection agency, that is between you and the agency. You can pay or not pay the USA collection agency. They can’t do anything to you legally for something that allegedly outside USA. You will be fine if you travel to Italy. This happens all of the time. They don’t bother doing this to other countries where they don’t have a local agent operation. Just be sure you don’t do anything to reset your statue of limitations status, and never pay an alleged debt to a collection agency wi...

The notice says "This is not a purchased debt. Previous attempts to contact you have failed, therefore the municipality has engaged our office to resolve this unpaid citation on their behalf." So I do not believe it has been "sold" to an outside collection agency/3rd party collector.

Re: Italian traffic ticket from 2017 now with attempt to collect in 2021
I did read that thread, but it didn't really have a good resolution of what to do.. My ticket is for supposedly speeding (77km in 70km) and not a ZTL violation. I visit Italy quite often so I'd like to get some sort of resolution, or at least feel like if I just ignore it that it will go away and not balloon into some massive fine. Like I mentioned previously, I paid *something* years ago and thought that was the end of it. I really wish I knew what it was that I already paid, but lesson learned. I've gathered that my US credit score will not be affected.HomeStretch wrote: ↑Tue Dec 28, 2021 8:02 pm Here’s a 2020 thread on the same topic that may be helpful:

Italian traffic ticket from 2017 now with attempt to collect in 2021
I just received in the mail something from Cedars Business Services. They claim I have a traffic citation in Italy from May 2017 and now (December 2021, a full 4.5 years later!) owe $280. The first sheet of paper includes: "your balance for a traffic citation with the City of Ferrara remains unpaid; therefore, your account has been placed with our office for collections. This is an attempt to collect a debt by a debt collector...." and "This is not a purchased debt. Previous attempts to contact you have failed, therefore the municipality has engaged our office to resolve this unpaid citation on their behalf." There is a second sheet of paper has "notification of traffic infringement" and on the back of THAT pap...

Online bank where I can view all other outside accounts?
I currently use USAA for my checking account but have decided to move on. The one thing I do like about USAA is that I can add all of my credit cards and external accounts like my TSP and Vanguard so that when I log into USAA I can see all of my accounts in one place. Is there another online bank where I can do this? I was thinking of switching to Ally or Schwab (unlimited ATM reimbursements). Thanks for your suggestions!
Edit to add: Also with USAA if I transfer money from my account to my spouses account (also at USAA), it happens instantly. Is this possible at other banks too?

Advice on what do with my cash/bond portion .. early retirement in a few years
I'd like some advice on what to with the cash portion of my portfolio. I am debating between putting it in VBTLX (total bond), VBILX (total bond intermediate), or VWIUX (tax exampt muni). Also open to something else like CDs at one bank (not trying to get too complicated) or buying treasuries on Vanguard. Target asset allocation is 55/45 stock/bond (At 60/40 was checking the market constantly but at 55/45 can SWAN and have zero stress over it, even though rationally I know there is not much difference.. I know). I was late to the investment game and basically just hoarded cash until 4 years ago when I finally jumped in. Then, for the past about two years or so I have bought no stock due to the market just going up and up so I have been keep...

I tried yesterday and today to set up voice verification on Vanguard, and what happens is: I get a call right away from "Private Number" then hear beep noise then the calls drops from they're end, then this cycle of calling and hanging up repeats 5 times total. Yesterday a few times a got a computer voice "hello" or the first part of "welcome" before it hung up. I'm not sure if this is a problem with Vanguard or what, but I feel like it probably is. Worth it to convert VLCAX to VV for the lower expense ratio?
I have ended up after some tax loss harvesting last December with about $350k of VLCAX (Vanguard Large Cap). The ER is 0.05%. I currently have all mutual funds and no ETFs. I was wondering if it is a good idea to convert it to VV with an ER of 0.04%? I do not plan to purchase any new VLCAX so the fact that I can't buy exact dollar amounts of more of it doesn't really affect me. I have dividend reinvestment turned off as well. It would maybe be easier for me for future tax loss harvesting if it stays in VLCAX (do a mutual fund exchange, something I'm used to, versus selling the ETF and buying VTSAX and worrying about if the market will go up or down a lot during the time gap). But in the back of my mind I'm thinking: what if the market never...

Re: How much does your employer 401k plan charge?
Dumb question. I guess I should call Fidelity, and I will, but are any administration or other fees beyond ER located on monthly/periodic statements? The document that specified my plans administrative fees was called an "ERISA 404 Participant Fee Disclosure" where it specified the annual administrative expense paid by each 401(k) participant. Seconding this. The "404a-5 Plan & Investment Notice" is the only place where I see the fees spelled out. The quarterly statements just give a dollar amount for "general administrative charges" then goes on to say "Additional charges associated with the plan's administrative expenses for the quarter were paid from the total annual operating expenses of the inves...

Re: How much does your employer 401k plan charge?
I work in a tiny company, just a handful who are in our 401k. The plan charges, on top of the individual ER's for each fund available, a 1.1% plan administration fee that blankets the whole thing. Is this high for a small company 401k plan? My spouse's plan charges 1.04% admin fee blanketing. They had about 60 employees in the plan last year. John Hancock is the administrator. The language is: "Your plan has engaged John Hancock to provide record-keeping services such as educational resources, transaction processing, investment platform, quarterly statements and website tools. Charges will be applied to your account as follows: 0.49%* on a pro-rata basis. * Charges may fluctuate based on the total assets in the plan, according to a pr...

Re: Keep VWIUX (muni bonds) or switch to VBLTX (total bond)?
Ah I see. I would calculate like this then? (again using tax rate 24% federal+9.3% state):
SEC Yield
VWIUX yield = 1.55% --> 1.41% after tax
VBTLX yield = 2.34% --> 1.56% after tax
Distribution Yield
VWIUX paid out 2.65% last month --> 2.40% after tax
VBTLX paid out 2.77% last month --> 1.85% after tax
Then it really looks like VWIUX would give greater net income despite the SEC yield making it look like VBTLX would give greater net income?

Re: Keep VWIUX (muni bonds) or switch to VBLTX (total bond)?
Given that tax rate, do you live in California? If so, you might want to put half your munis in Vanguard CA Long-Term Tax-Exempt, and half in Limited-Term Tax-Exempt. This would give you an overall intermediate-term duration, with only half your bonds in CA, but more than half your bond interest exempt from CA state tax. We do live in California. Posting current numbers (8/17/19) for posterity (using tax rate 24% federal+9.3% state) :D VBTLX (total bond) yield = 2.34% --> 1.56% after tax VWIUX (interm muni) yield = 1.55% --> 1.41% after tax VCLAX (CA long muni) yield = 1.78% --> 1.78% after tax VMLUX (limited muni) yield = 1.36% --> 1.23% after tax Half VCLAX/half VMLUX = 1.57% --> 1.50% after tax VUSXX (treasury MMF) = 2.09% --> 1.59% aft...

I do not think we pay NIIT. Our AGI was right at $200k last year (MFJ).
Ahh thank you, that is reassuring. When I decided to use VWIUX over VBTLX in the first place I'm sure it had a small advantage yield-wise (at that time). Perhaps I should not worry and just wait it out.Cyclesafe wrote: ↑Fri Aug 16, 2019 6:08 am IMHO, these minor differences are well within the normal relative fluctuations of these funds. Next week, the small advantage of VBTLX could easily be gone. Also, bear in mind that VWIUX, with a duration of 4.9 (versus 6.0 for VBTLX), is slightly less sensitive to interest rate changes. OTOH, VWIUX is very slightly more risky than VBTLX.

Ah ok let me try again
If I do nothing, next year I will earn: 54000 [current value of VWIUX] * 1.42% [my after tax yield of VWIUX (1.57%*(1-.093)] = $767
If I switch to VBTLX I will earn: (54000-(3000 [capital gains incurred by selling] * (0.15 [fed capital gains rate]+0.093 [CA capital gains rate])) * 1.59% [my after tax yield of VBTLX (2.38%*(1-.24-0.093)] = $847

Re: Keep VWIUX (muni bonds) or switch to VBLTX (total bond)?
Is this the correct calculation?
2.38*(100%-24%) = 1.81
Which means if the VWIUX was 1.81% or greater yield it would be better than VBTLX at 2.38%? (and currently VWIUX is yielding 1.57%, so that is not better)
Also am I calculating this right:
If I do nothing, next year I will earn: 54000 [current value of VWIUX] * 2.13% [my tax effective yield of VWIUX] = $1150
If I switch to VBTLX I will earn: (54000-(3000 [capital gains incurred by selling] * (0.15 [fed capital gains rate]+0.093 [CA capital gains rate])) * 2.38% [the yield of VBTLX] = $1267
I have about $30k carryover losses from tax loss harvesting last December.
2.38*(100%-24%) = 1.81

Keep VWIUX (muni bonds) or switch to VBTLX (total bond)?
Federal tax bracket: 24%
State tax bracket: 9.3%
VWIUX (Vanguard Intermediate Tax-Ex Muni): 1.57% SEC yield -> 2.13% tax effective yield
VBTLX (Vanguard Total Bond): 2.38% SEC yield
I got into VWIUX back at the end of 2018. My question is, at what point would it be best to switch from VWIUX to VBTLX (if at all)? I have no space in tax-deferred to keep bonds at this time, so this is in taxable. The total amount of VWIUX I have is about $54,000 with about $3,000 in unrealized capital gains and have been reinvesting the monthly dividend. It looks like the current tax effective yield is 0.25% more if I were to be in VBTLX vs the VWIUX.

I wanted to post my data point today in case it's helpful for anyone. I placed an order to exchange a fund into VFWAX when what I wanted was to exchange into VTWAX. Ooops!
Within 15 minutes of making the error, I went to "order status" and clicked "cancel", and was given the message: "Your request to cancel order numbers ######## was sent to Vanguard for approval on 03/21/2019 at 1:55 p.m., Eastern time. To track your request, View order status from the link below. Your orders will be canceled only if they have not been executed. Print this confirmation for your records."
When I now check "order status" it shows "Cancelled" as the new status, so I believe it worked.

Re: Schedule CA (540) - adjusting for Treasury MMF (VUSXX)
Thank you for your reply! I am using Express1040, I think similar to other web-based software. I'd still like to know how to fill out Schedule CA 540 ( if that's what I'm supposed to do), for general knowledge.

Schedule CA (540) - adjusting for Treasury MMF (VUSXX)
I just got finished doing my taxes using online software. Federally, it all seems to be just fine. My question is, when I get to the California part...It's probably just the software, but I can't figure out how to adjust for VUSXX and VMFXX dividend income on the state taxes. I may try to file using CalFile or do a manual paper return for the first time if I can't figure out how to get this Express1040 to work. Either way, I want to know how to correctly file so I can make sure my final return is correct. *I received ~$500 in dividends from VUSXX (Vanguard Treasury Money Market Fund). It had 100% income from U.S. government obligations, so all of it should be state-tax free. *I received ~$20 in dividends from VMFXX (Vanguard Federal Money M...

Re: Importing TSP data to Google sheets
This works for me (note: column "7" is the G fund). Change that one number as needed for the column of the fund you need.
=INDEX(ImportHtml("https://www.tsp.gov/InvestmentFunds/FundPerformance/index.html", "table", 2), 2, 7)
Hope this helps!

Too much CA SDI (state disability insurance) withheld?
My tax software warns that there may have had been much CA SDI withheld. CA State Disability Insurance (SDI) withholding rate is currently 1%.
It looks like the amount that was withheld is 1% of the YTD gross pay number on the final paycheck of 2018.
The number the software gives for what it thinks the withholding should be should be is equal to 1% of Box 1 (wages, tips, other comp).
Employer used the gross amount pre-401k deductions; tax software uses a number post-401k deductions and post-employee meals deductions.
So my question is: CA SDI withholding rate is 1% of what exactly? Which is correct, the W2 or the tax software?

My VUSXX holding dropped below and has stayed below $50k since late October. So far nothing has happened.

Federal employee new HSA in 2019
I am a new enrollee for GEHA HDHP for 2019, was sent a packet in the mail from HSA Bank and have everything set up online so know my account number and routing number.
If I go into MyPay and click start new allotment for HSA, it says " This action will be reflected in your January 05, 2019 pay." Is it ok to start contributing on that date? Just wanted to double check that I'm not doing it too early.
Thanks!

Re: Tax loss harvest VTSAX -> VLCAX or VFIAX
Well, I did it! VTSAX -> VLCAX today. And with the tiny drop in the market, I didn't even need to stress about the possibility of the share price going up in the time between hitting the exchange button and close price at the end of day

Tax loss harvest VTSAX -> VLCAX or VFIAX
Background: Currently sitting on ~$16k of losses in VTSAX (Vanguard Total US Stock Index), total position is ~$300k. In 24% fed tax bracket, 9.3% state. I have tax loss harvested in the past so I understand the mechanics, but when I did that it was with my international fund so I felt more.. indifferent I guess if I were to get "stuck" in VFWAX (Vanguard All-World ex-US Index) vs VTIAX (Vanguard Total International Index). I ended up being able to make a round-trip (twice) so that wasn't an issue. I think because this VTSAX position is so much bigger dollar-wise, and a bigger percentage of my overall portfolio (~33%), it's more anxiety-inducing to think of a third of my money being "stuck" in the not-best fund .... so I'...

Re: help this RN negotiate job change
Can confirm. I have worked in both private and federal hospitals, and pay for new RN staff was based on a rigid scale taking into account years of experience, a little extra for specially certification, or type of degree ADN/BSN/MSN. There was no negotiating, very cut and dry, objective.BolderBoy wrote: ↑Fri Nov 02, 2018 9:55 am Below the level of senior nurse executives, I've not seen nursing positions, particularly staff nurse positions, as being negotiable. They tend to be offered, "as is" and the few staff nurses who tried to "negotiate" were quickly labeled "difficult" and the hiring authority moved on.

Re: TLH help needed - VTIAX and VBIAX
I have incurred some $2000 loss in VTIAX. Would like to exchange into a TLH partner. However, the last automated buy was yesterday. As long as I sell all the lots I have bought in the past 30 days, it should be okay, right? Thinking to buy VFWAX instead. Any better suggestions? Yes, sell any lots bought in the past 30 days. And if you have the same holding in an IRA make sure you didn't buy there in the same time period too.. if so then it gets more complicated. VTIAX -> VFWAX is commonly recommended here. I have done VTIAX -> VFWAX -> VTIAX once this year, and today back into VFWAX. In 31 days if its down or even, I'll return to VTIAX. I think maybe if it's even up a little I may go back since it's my preferred fund and my losses were so ...
