Re: Advice on short Vietnam visit

After some more research, I’m realizing my idea to stay overnight near Halong Bay in order to have more time on a day cruise the following day does not work as all the cruises start around midday (I guess private cruises excepted). I also learned there are some pretty nice boats, so staying overnigh...

Re: How to find a reliable car service center?

I found my local mechanic through Tirerack, which has a directory of local installers for tires and suspension components bought from them, along with customer reviews. I think they vet local installers based on competence, equipment and cost. I picked one near me that had the best reviews, and had ...

Re: Advice on short Vietnam visit

Been thinking about this. Sounds like you will skip HaLong Bay, which I think would be a mistake should you decide on Hanoi. HaLong Bay and NinBinh were my favorite stops in Vietnam (we were in country for 10 days). NinBinh has similar formations to HaLong Bay and might be another option for you as...

Re: Advice on short Vietnam visit

Thanks for enlightening me on the purpose of staying overnight on a boat in Halong Bay; somehow, the logic of seeing more the next day eluded me. I’ll have to consider it in light of time constraints. I think I’ll have another opportunity to see Halong Bay when I return to see more of Vietnam as DW,...

Re: Advice on short Vietnam visit

Thanks for all the feedback thus far; I certainly have more thinking to do before finalizing my travel plans, including adding another day or so to the visit. For my first trip to Vietnam, I want to visit its two major cities to get at least a flavor, and also take in its best known tourist attracti...

Advice on short Vietnam visit

I will be visiting relatives in Asia for a couple of weeks in late Sept. I'm thinking of adding 5/6 days (on the ground) to the trip and visit Vietnam for the first time while I'm in the region. I realize 5/6 days is not enough to see most of Vietnam, so am focusing on Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Th...

Re: Alfa Romeo Giulia thoughts

Thanks for all the comments thus far. Due to the very favorable reviews by the motoring press, I was intrigued by the Giulia as well, and thought about it as a replacement for my Audi S4. I checked it out at the NY auto show in 2018, and even went as far as paying a visit to my nearest dealer in NJ....

Alfa Romeo Giulia thoughts

My niece is considering getting a new Alfa Romeo Giulia (leaning toward Quadrifoglio). The car has received glowing reviews from the motoring press on performance and driving pleasure, as well as knocks on reliability issues. This is all very familiar as this is consistent with Alfa's history. The c...

Re: Diminished value claim advice

I successfully settled a diminished value claim after I was rear ended in my Tesla at a red light. I paid a professional $300 to write the report, submitted it to the insurance, they pretended it wasn't a real thing, then low balled me an offer, then raised the offer a couple times and I settled fo...

Re: Diminished value claim advice

I think the ethical thing to do would be to disclose the accident/repair anyway, irrespective of Carfax (which has detailed information on repairs), etc. So, the prospective buyer will know what was done. As a concern, the repaired area could be more prone to rust down the road as the painting/primi...

Re: Diminished value claim advice

I guess the discussion has evolved to the philosophical merits of diminished value. To make things more pragmatic, her plan was to hold on to the car for about five years (three years from now) and trade/exchange for something nicer; this plan may need to be reassessed based on recent events. I thin...

Re: Diminished value claim advice

I understand this would be her battle, not mine. I'm only trying to help by giving advice on how best to proceed. It seemed the best path might be via small claims as the total damages are expected to be below $5K. But, based on feedback thus far, I think an initial conversation with an attorney wou...

Re: Diminished value claim advice

Thanks for the feedback. Other than authorizing the body shop to make repairs and to collect associated costs from the insurance company, I don't know that there has been any settlement with the insurance company. The insurance company also did not provide a rental car (ignored requests to do so) du...

Diminished value claim advice

My daughter was hit from behind by a commercial truck while waiting at a traffic light just before last Christmas. She is fine; her car (2017 Subaru Legacy) suffered about $10K (a bit less than 50% of appraised value) in damage. The truck was at fault and the driver admitted it to the police, which ...

Re: Buying a WSJ on Ebay

I looked around a bit for other deals and didn't see anything better than the $91 deal on eBay. The number of subscriptions available were down to just a couple as business seemed to be brisk. I pull the trigger on this deal, but included a note to the seller about expecting each day's paper to be d...

Re: Buying a WSJ on Ebay

I saw a one-year print and digital deal on eBay for $91. As I was about to pull the trigger, I see delivery of the print edition is via the postal service. Does anyone know how each day’s paper would arrive early that morning via the postal service? All daily newspaper deliveries i’ve known have bee...

Time for a new car and have decided to splurge a little in our old age. We currently have a BMW series 3 with 110K miles and like it a lot. May even be doing European Delivery. Your take on 2019 MB E Class or BMW Series 5 or Audi 6?Just doing research now and will buy some time after the New Year. ...

Re: Seeking input on investment decision

It would be good for you to explain your thought process behind those choices. I don't agree that is a good investing plan. I think everyone should start with the three fund allocation and do something different when he/she can argue convincingly why it should be different. Picking investments for ...

Re: Seeking input on investment decision

I just retired, and intend to use funds from my IRAs and 401K for living expenses before other investments in a couple of years (prior to RMD), since those funds won't escape taxes. I'll draw on other investments once the IRA and 401K money have been depleted since these can be passed on subject to...

Re: Seeking input on investment decision

Restless, My opinions are not always inline with bogleheads, so take this with a healthy dose of caution: If price volatility is not a concern for you, if you are holding assets for income, then there are stocks that can make sense for you. Capital risk only matters if you need to sell the asset. I...

Re: Seeking input on investment decision

Thanks for the feedback thus far. A bit more information about me might be helpful -- I'm fortunate to in the position of not needing much growth from this IRA; modest growth with decent income would be sufficient. I have other investments that would make my AA ~60% in bonds, along with other equity...

Seeking input on investment decision

I’m in the process of rolling over some money (mid six figures) into an IRA and need to make some investment decisions. My goal for this money is relatively higher current income while minimizing capital risks from stock market corrections and higher interest rates, but maintaining some growth poten...

Re: To take or not to take delivery of Tesla 3

In case this has not been mentioned, Edmunds (car research resource/entity) has a M3 undergoing long-term testing. Below is the link to their updates. It may be helpful in deciding how to proceed.
