Re: how do you tip on wine at a restaurant

I think the waiter didn't want to take home pennies at the end of the night. Seriously. Some people can be that way. But in order to assure that, the waiter would probably have needed to change the value of multiple checks in a night. A lot of people tip an uneven dollar amount so that their charge...

Re: how do you tip on wine at a restaurant

I left $50 as a tip for a recent meal (at a nice restaurant) for five people, which was 15 percent. Call me cheap, call me out of touch, call me whatever, but I am not feeling guilty about a $10 per person gratuity. Frankly, I don't think I got my money's worth at that amount, but I'll admit that s...

Re: Buy an old farmhouse?

15 acres of...? Timber is lower maintenance than pasture, for example. How much "lawn" are you going to have to keep up with? Mowing vs bushhogging? Any land rented for crops? Old houses can be a lot of work, and so can land if you don't have a plan. As an example, we own 25 acres and most of it is ...

Re: Pregnant wife - HDHP

Congratulations! Make sure to also check what are and aren't covered services on the HDHP, but you definitely want to do as above and compare the premium cost in addition to the deductible and out of pocket max.

Re: Roth IRA: Begin With ETF's or Wait Until 3k?

I'm still learning, so maybe I'm missing something. With Vanguard, aren't a lot of the ETFs the same as the MFs but with a better expense ratio if you aren't able to hit the Admiral level? I'm not understanding the downside for using the ETFs in a Roth IRA, so I'm thinking I'm missing something.

Re: how do you tip on wine at a restaurant

Also, most restaurants deduct a certain percentage of a waiters total sales for tip out to the busboy or bartender. This can be anywhere from 3-7% of the waiters total sales, which includes any alcohol or wine Sold. So depending on the tip out practices at an establishment, a server pays that perce...

Re: Finance a $28,000 house for Brother?

It sounds like you've thought it over. It is hard when you want to help people! A mortgage for that amount is tough to get. We were able to get a mortgage on a home priced just under $50K, but most banks didn't want the trouble. Half of that would be harder. At our price range we also had a previous...

Re: Unusual Family Situation, Increase in Finances

Life insurance isn't listed, but we have it! Approx $750K on husband and $500K on me. Term, not whole.

We redid my husband's W4 today and we don't have any tax liability. I think the child tax credit works in our favor also. That might be why we still don't owe tax with the change?

Unusual Family Situation, Increase in Finances

Hey everybody! I've been lurking for a little while, but this will be my first post. I'm clever and a quick learner, but haven't been at this long, so feel free to assume I know nothing. Our family situation is a bit unusual. We have 14 children, 9 of them kids we adopted who have special needs. We ...
