Backdoor Roth for Prior Year

Hello. I am considering doing a backdoor Roth IRA contribution for the first time. I already filed my tax return for 2019 but am wondering if I could still make a traditional IRA contribution for 2019 now (which would not be tax deductible based on my income level) and then convert it to Roth during 2020. Would that require amending my 2019 return even though the 2019 traditional IRA contribution will not be taxable? Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

Fund Allocation in Portfolio Watch

Hello all. I regularly input my bond and stock investments that I hold outside of Vanguard (e.g., outside retirement accounts) in Vanguard as “outside investments” so I can see everything together. But it seems that the Vanguard Portfolio Watch tool reflects some of these as “uncategorized,” which isn’t very helpful for looking at detailed bond and stock characteristics across my entire portfolio. Is there a way to manually input details such as jurisdiction, credit quality, interest rate sensitivity, etc., for bonds, and other details for stock funds? Thanks in advance!

HVAC Cost in Denver

Hey folks. I’m looking to replace ancient AC and furnace systems in our 3,200 sq ft house after the new year. I got a few quotes, and the cheapest (which also comes highly recommended) is at $8,200 installed for a Rheem 100K BTU 80% furnace, Rheem 4 ton 13 SEER AC and Aprilaire whole home humidifier. A new filter box and some sheet metal work is included. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this seems like a good deal? I’m concerned that for this price I should be getting more efficient systems. I don’t know if I would want to pay more for higher efficiency in my area, but don’t want to pay for it and not get it either. TIA

Re: Best values at Costco? Honestly, a little disappointed...

Diapers and formula are pretty good there. Some people really have diapers dialed down (buy them at a specific Walgreens with a coupon under a full moon, etc.) but unless you do that they are pretty cheap at CostCo.

Re: Republic Wireless

Hi folks. I am considering moving from AT&T to Republic Wireless and I thought I would revive this thread since I believe many of the issues with the service that early posters identified have been fixed. I am an attorney and frequently use my personal phone for work / conference calls / email, etc. Is there anyone else who uses Republic Wireless in a similar capacity and how does it work for you? Bonus points if you live in the Denver area and can speak to the cell coverage.

Re: [How should I pay off my mortgage?]

Thanks, all. There are some good ideas here. I probably overstated the job security issues in my industry and I suspect that our situation is in line with what SimonJester outlined above. I tend to be more risk-averse than average and this discussion has been helpful.

[How should I pay off my mortgage?]

[Moved into a new post from: I did it and feel great about it (paid off mortgage) --admin LadyGeek] Hello! After much research and deliberation I have decided that killing my home mortgage makes sense for me. However, I have a mechanical question for the group. I currently have ~$375K outstanding on the mortgage and I think that I can start paying extra on it in August 2018 and have it paid off by February 2020. However, the industry I am in is somewhat unstable and I am hesitant to get halfway through the payoff and then get laid off while still having a mortgage payment. I do keep a year's expenses in cash and three year's expenses in easily accessible securities outside of tax-deferred accounts, so that does give some comfort. But my qu...
