Re: Traditional or Roth TSP Question

ExitStageLeft and O2nz, thank you for your input, it's very helpful. However, I just realized I may have omitted a couple bits of relevant information. First, my wife's 401(k) contributions are all pre-tax. Second, my TSP account currently consists of $103,700 of Traditional (pre-tax) money and $78,...

Re: Traditional or Roth TSP Question

Since some have asked to see all the information in the BH format, I’ve listed it below. I intended to do it in a later post in conjunction with questions about my Vanguard PAS situation but I guess we can combine the two issues; I’ve listed them in questions at the end. Hopefully it won’t get mixed...

Traditional or Roth TSP Question

Hi there. Early last year I discovered this forum and subsequently posted my financial information and asked for your review and input. We (wife and I) have made various changes and adjustments since then and still have minor ones to go. A major one has been signing on with Vanguard PAS. That has go...

Question About NYLIAC Annuity TIRA Transfer to Vanguard

Hi there. My wife and I each have traditional IRAs with New York Life; they are variable annuities. We are now out of the surrender charge period (hooray!) and I am about to transfer them to our Vanguard traditional IRAs. The holding in NYLIAC is a Mainstay fund, which I believe is something proprie...

Re: TLH With Gold?

Thanks for the responses. I'm pretty new to all of this but confirm that I'm seeing the logic here--the reason for using the gold sale loss to offset income rather than long term capital gains from stock sale is that the tax rate on regular income is greater than that of capital gains?

TLH With Gold?

About 6-7 years ago we bought 6 one-ounce bars of gold. This was based on the concept of "diversification" and comments from my father like, "everyone should have some gold." I guess for the SHTF scenario. At any rate, gold was high then, about $1,600/ounce. Now, it is about $1,400/ounce. Recently, ...

Re: Folks in their 60s and above. What early investment on health do you recommend.

I'll be 60 this summer; I guess that's close enough to be able to chime in. I'm a big fan of exercise, have been active in sports and working out for 50 years or so. It's something that I love, I work out every (cardio and resistance) weekday morning before work and usually some on weekends as well....

Re: Roth or tIRA for 25 y/o Daughter?

Thanks for all the replies. A number of questions were posed in them and here are replies: -Her marginal tax rate is indeed 12%. -She doesn't max out the 403 now; she's putting in $200/paycheck. Again, she's simultaneously saving for a house. -I have no idea what tax bracket she'll be in 35-40 years...

Roth or tIRA for 25 y/o Daughter?

My daughter has taught Kindergarten for two years in a public school in MO. She has a 403(b) through Valic, all in Vanguard Target Retirement 2055; this is a Roth account. As she is nearly engaged and will soon be pursuing purchasing her/their first house, they have lots of expenses and are trying t...

Re: Questions About Selling ESPP Shares

We intend to open a taxable account with Vanguard and put the proceeds in that. Can we do a transfer to Vanguard before selling? As a side note, we are just now engaging with Vanguard PAS, having had them show us their plan via video conference a couple nights ago (my intent is to utilize them for m...

Questions About Selling ESPP Shares

Hi there, My wife is a former employee of Home Depot and she owns stock that was acquired through their ESPP. The shares are held by Computershare. We've decided to sell them all and I've looked at the Computershare site about how to do it and it appears to be fairly straightforward. However, we've ...

403(b) or 457(b) and Roth/Non-Roth for Teacher?

I need some help in advising my 25-year old, single daughter, who is a new teacher in Missouri. She has the opportunity to choose a 403 or 457 retirement plan through Valic. Which is a better choice? Additionally, should it be Roth or not? I'm suspecting not, given her age. She has the Vanguard Targ...

Question about Old Fidelity Investment

Hi there. Back in the late 80s when my now wife was single she started a systematic investing plan with an "advisor" using the fund, Fidelity Destiny II. I think she was only putting in $50/month at the time. A few years later we were married and then a few years after that when I was looking into t...

Hi There, I discovered this forum about a year ago, was amazed at the wealth of knowledge and information. Put Extra $$ Into Taxable Fund or 401(k)?

Okay, I and spouse are still learning and working/reshaping our portfolio. Currently, we only contribute $1,300/year to her company 401(k) account, which is the amount needed to get a company match. I have previously posted our portfolio and asked for recommendations, which I've received and am larg...

Re: What to do with $50k Earmarked for Taxable Account?

Thanks, Sarge, for that clarification. But then, I guess I don't understand the Backdoor Roth need, scenario, etc. Why don't people just open a Roth IRA in the "normal" manner, what's to preclude that? What's the reason for a Backdoor Roth? There are income limits to contributing directly to a Roth...

Re: What to do about Wife's Term Life Insurance Policy Nearing End?

I would consider looking at a ten year level term policy and then drop it when she is no longer working. That's probably what we'll end up doing. Though I think I'd keep it all the way through the end of the 15-year term, her working or not....$220/year is a pretty small amount of money and if heav...

Okay, so I am definitely leaning towards starting a taxable account with Vanguard, as some of you have suggested. However, I have read now numerous posts regarding Backdoor Roth IRAs; this is totally Greek to me as I'm a newbie. Trying to cram in and understand as much as possible about that (I did ...

Re: What to do about Wife's Term Life Insurance Policy Nearing End?

So, in our case, maybe just get a 10-year term policy for 100k (least amount) to cover to retirement and a few years beyond? Cover what? Do you need the extra money to meet expenses if your spouse dies? To cover the lost income if she died while still employed, pre-anticipated retirement age. Both ...

Hey guys, I posted back on April 6 at 9:21 pm with my portfolio and asked for recommendations. Got some excellent ones I believe, from Duckie and others. Thanks to you who commented on my thread, it's very helpful. Duckie--the farm property taxes last year were only $190, no issue relative to the $8k...
