Wow! I’m guessing you live in California or NY if you think it’s that expensive to raise kids. If you ever want a little perspective check out RootofGood.com guy was an engineer, early retired at 33 with only a little more than the OP, has 3 kids, travels and post his complete monthly budget and in...

Re: Better tax-deferred options for law partner?

No, not the buy-in. For example, in my firm we must contribute something like $15k in profit sharing 401(k) plus something like $7k in "match," all of which is my contribution to the 401(k), in order to stay on the right side of the so-called top-heavy rules. I can and do contribute another $18k in...

Re: Request for Promotion letter to Senior Management

Sorry but a letter is a waste of everyone's time.

The only way you will get a promotion is by changing employers.

Re: Better tax-deferred options for law partner?

In also a law firm partner. You need to start by getting the details on what the firm offers. She may actually be required to make big contributions to its plans first. Generally they will be pre-tax even if she has to write a check to the firm. Not sure if you're talking about the buy-in? That's a...

Better tax-deferred options for law partner?

Spouse is a partner in a law firm which converted to a partnership this year. Her income will be a distribution from the pship on a K-1 at year end. However, she is still considered an employee for purposes of being included in the firm's 401k but she has more than $18k available to put into a tax-d...

Re: Selling Tradelines

Fraud defined: “wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.”

Selling trade lines is a violation of the contract you accepted when you got your card. It is a civil matter, not criminal, but is surely fraud under the definition above.

Re: Pension Now (Age 36) or Later (Age 65)?

Giving up a low risk 6% rate. The pension is from Big 4 Accounting firm. If they can't do this right, we are all screwed. Arthur Andersen used to be a Big Five accounting firm with a pension plan as well. The failure of Arthur Andersen had zero to do with the management of their pension plan. What ...
