Re: Any experience with Mr. Cooper? (Nationstar)

I have no complaints so far. Everything switched over automatically including my ach. Although I looked into switching to a 15 year with them directly just to see what their rate was and they were way high.

Re: Preventative car maintenance (oil changes) costs

Toyota recommends conventional oil at 5K miles. I use full synthetic and change around 6.5K. I do this because I would often find myself busy and running the conventional oil to 6500+ so I just bite the bullet for peace of mind.

Re: Electric shavers - foil vs rotary

Recommend Braun with the cleaning station. You can buy the ingredients to make your own cleaning fluid on Amazon which saves a good deal of money. I switched from a Norelco rotary-type and did not know what I was missing. Much easier to attack stubborn hair.

Re: Stinky Front Loader (Washer)

On my LG I removed the detergent tray completely, and when I reached my hand in there, there was a layer of slime. I cleaned that, the trap on the bottom front, and all around the rubber gasket before running an over the counter cleaner and that did the trick. Now after every wash I open the deterge...

Re: Satellite Phone with data plan

Anyone have experience with Globalstar in the Sierra Nevadas? I know that Iridium will have the best coverage, but Globalstar has an unlimited minutes plan at a few rental companies. Unlimited is no good if it doesn't have service of course. I am able to schedule my use of the phone for when I am at...

Re: Purchasing airline tickets at the airport

It depends on the airline. Look for the Customer Interface Charge hidden in with the taxes. Generally you do not pay this fee if you purchase in person at the Airport. Last summer I saved $67/ticket on Frontier and ended up with two round trip tickets for $180 from Texas - California. The last few t...

Re: Rain Jacket recommendations and care

My wife and I backpack and researching gear is an expensive hobby of mine. I've tried several of the latest and greatest fabrics. I use the special washes, and wash as minimally as possible, and also reapply nikwax performance fabric spray. You either get wet from sub-par fabric, or from sweat when ...

Re: Benefits/longevity of more expensive ($300+) mens dress shoes?

I buy expensive shoes on ebay. My general rule is that if I can still read the original brand name on the bottom of the sole, then they only saw occasional wear. I've bought several pairs of 800$ shoes for under 100$. A pair of faragamos i am wearing right now are on their third sole eight years lat...

Re: How to "waste" money on groceries?

My grocery store has a Managers Special meat section for meat that "expires" within a day or two. 30-50% off. I eat it within a week and have never had a problem. When there is organic grass fed beef I buy whatever is there and freeze it. I do however avoid the seafood in that section. There is a si...

Re: How do you calculate net worth with pensions?

I can only speak to my pension but there is an account value that you maintain. If you die before you receive that amount in payments, your beneficiary will receive the remainder of the balance. If you out-live your balance you still receive payments but your beneficiary will not receive anything. Y...

Re: Flooring for New House

I put in floors in 2013, and went with engineered hardwood. Water does not seem to hurt it which is nice but my experience with it has been so so. Very slippery for my dog and shows light scratches. At the time, vinyl flooring was very cheap and fake looking, never seriously considered it. LAst week...

Re: kayaking!

I would recommend a sit-on top kayak. It's versatile and can be used on lakes, ocean, rivers, etc. Find one used on craigslist, check for wear/abuse and make sure the hatches close correctly. A 10-12 footer should be stable and still allow you to move quickly. My friends and I use Wilderness Systems...

Is this a situation where the CCR's state that the window frame is the HOA responsibility (limited common element?)? If so, what would the HOA do if the frame became defective or were leaking?

Re: Am I being stubborn about housing purchase

I would at least save until you can buy without PMI. That, and high property taxes in Austin make it an interesting comparison whether to buy or rent. I still lean buy when your ready, but if you can find a good deal on renting, it could allow you to accumulate. The only reason I was able to save en...

Re: Huge special assessment on Condo?

I've served on my condo board (68 units)for a number of years. 1M for an 88 unit property is a really nice reserve, of course I don't know the value or size of the condos. Our current board took over after the last board ran our reserve to zero, and had to do a 300k special assessment. It has been ...
