Exactly! And with TIPS' real yields about 2%, it is close to a no-brainer to use them for the bridge to SS.

Yes, in some scenarios you might do better with nominal bonds. But you also might do worse. To me, the reasoning in the above post makes perfect sense.

Our wedding song was The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere." Perhaps their sweetest song, so good even John Lennon liked it. Highly praised by producer George Martin, Art Garfunkel, etc. A singer/guitarist friend performed it beautifully at our wedding, not an easy one to sing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdcSFVXd3MU Lyrics: To lead a better life, I need my love to be here Here, making each day of the year Changing my life with a wave of her hand Nobody can deny that there's something there There, running my hands through her hair Both of us thinking how good it can be Someone is speaking, but she doesn't know he's there I want her everywhere And if she's beside me, I know I need never care But to love her is to need her ev...

I got the lumpy expense wrong above: need to add in the cost of the new car.

Still, the basic idea remains the same. IMO, the availability of TIPS yields of 1.9% - 2.4% for years 2025-2031 is a game-changer for those folks (like the OP) seeking additional security.

Wife expects 13,300 annually in SocSec starting 4 years from now. Three years later, when we are both 70, our combined SocSec I expect will be 57,000.... Assets for retirement total about 3.8 M So let's see if I have this right. You have about $3.8 million in your investment portfolio, and estimated $130K/year in expenses, so right now expenses = 3.4% of portfolio. When your wife begins drawing benefits--all numbers will go up very roughly with inflation so these caculations should be OK--$130K - $13K = $117K in expenses not covered by Social Security, so 3.1%. When both are drawing benefits, $130K - $57K = $73,000 = 1.9% of portfolio. I think the situation is even nicer than that. We need to factor in her government inflation-adjusted pen...

Scott & Bailey , on Amazon Prime with Britbox. This is a police drama set in Manchester, England. It is well written, well acted, and generally well done but much darker than I prefer. I stopped in Season 3 of the 5 seasons of the series. I enjoyed this show very much. I agree with your comments. I thought there were great plots, interesting detective work, fascinating characters, and snappy dialog. Very entertaining. In addition to the darkness of some of the stories, one other aspect (in the early seasons) may be a little off-putting for some. The strong admirable characters are only women. The male characters -- whether detectives, spouses, lovers -- are typically portrayed as weak, lazy, incompetent, nasty, or evil. Some viewers ma...

That was the earliest we have ever filed. We did it ASAP because of a large federal refund. (We did not do all the Roth conversions I had planned for November, and we had "too much" federal tax withheld from other income.)

Re: Does Social Security keep up with inflation?

The simple thought experiment should also show that, even if the COLA was "accurate"... it's always done in arrears such that you slowly, incrementally loose purchasing power over time. No sure what you mean here. The Social Security COLA is calculated based on the previous year's inflation, but the most you are ever behind at one time is a few months inflation, which catches up at the beginning of the next calendar year. There is no accumulation of "arrears" from year to year such that you lose purchasing power over time. Think about your year two---- you are "back at the same level", as the COLA would increase your income by that percentage.... but now the products that you are purchasing are at N(1+inflatio...

And I don't want more Jul 2033s because I already have a whole bunch of them. My ladder has rungs maturing every 6 months and I'm sticking to that, as I'm confident I'll be able to grasp that even when I get older and mentally enfeebled. Same here. My only real question is whether to buy at auction or wait until the 1/34s appear on the 2ndary market. I will almost certainly buy at auction, unless there is a large discrepancy between expected yield and the 7/33 yield the day before...if the expected yield is much less I might consider waiting. Yields may be sort of in a holding pattern now. I looked for the new 10-Year 2034 TIPS at Vanguard. The auction schedule there shows a REOPEN, but not a new TIPS for 1/2034. Does anyone know why? Re: Trading Treasuries (nominal and TIPS)

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, post purchase, on vanguard how does one find the ytm of the purchased treasury? The yield at settlement should be on the trade confirmation. However, I think for bills VG shows discount rate instead of yield. You also can calculate yield with the spreadsheet YIELD function, using the price on the trade confirmation or the order history. For bills with maturities of not more than one half year (so 26 weeks or less), use frequency = 1, otherwise use frequency = 2. For bills you also can use the formula used by Treasury, which is documented here . Use 366 days if there's a leap day in the year, and 365 otherwise. The YIELD formula may give a slightly different result when Treasury uses 366 days in th...

Re: I Bonds Mega Thread (I Bond Heads Rejoice!)

Conventional wisdom is that the spirit of the statute intends to limit the dollar amount of the bonds an account may acquire to be $10,000 in principal, regardless of how the acquisition takes place (with inheritance being a stated exception in section (c)). But it does remain a very good point that the scenario of multiple I Bonds being gifted to a single recipient by multiple donors that in the aggregate exceed $10,000 in principal in a given calendar year is problematic when there can't be a reasonable expectation that all donors are aware of the activity of all the other donors. The anecdotal reactions of Treasury Direct in addressing situations where we think it should consider a purchase (or acquisition) over the intended maximum has...

I was in a store today and on the store’s musak I heard some guy singing Fast Car and I was quite annoyed that whoever he was, he was bringing nothing new to the song - just singing it in the same tempo and using the same phrasing as Tracy Chapman. When I hear a cover song I want some reinterpretation, some different instrumentation, or at least a tempo change - think Jimi Hendrix’s All Along the Watchtower. Whenever I read about such reluctance, I also think about Jack Bogle. Was he afraid to try to help people? Was he ignorant of the risks of getting involved? Throughout his entire career he was a financial professional, and I'm pretty sure he had the risk side covered. That's different than someone with no academic or professional background giving financial advice. Thanks. Those are important aspects. You're right, of course, about Mr. Bogle being the (ultimate) professional. I, and most of us on the forum, are amateurs. After listening to multiple offhanded comments regarding being ill prepared for retirement from my fellow coworkers it is weighing heavily on me. What can I do to help them? Or should I just stay out of it? They are really just saying that to mask the fact that they are much wealthier than others would think. Or it's a way to make small talk and to promote a feeling of "commiseration with other people" because it's assumed that "everyone is in the same boat I am". Sometimes, too, the offhanded comments are based on what the person saying it has heard or been exposed to by their "circle of family/friends". They themselves might be doing fine. Far beyond any capability offered by brokerages or banks or other institutions. If you don't use certain functions, sure maybe. I realize some use it solely to monitor spending and such. But I have a far bigger list of requirements and so far nobody else fills that list.
Same here.

Re: What are you listening to now

The brand spanking new Beatles single: The Beatles - Now And Then (Official Audio) - 2023 (Posted on YouTube an hour ago.) The Beatles: Now and Then review – ‘final’ song is a poignant act of closure I just now heard it too. The last time I will ever hear a new Beatles tune. (i played it for my wife and myself. She was a huge Beatles fan back then). It’s melancholy, both that thought and the song itself. Yes, it's sad but true. I mostly came to appreciate The Beatles retrospectively, after they broke up, as I was only 8 in 1970. But I was very familiar with and fond of both Abbey Road and Let It Be by the time they quit. I still remember a strange but profound sense of loss, even though I knew hardly anything about them personally or how t...

Re: What are you listening to now

I like a lot of his stuff. Some memorable songs (to me) are Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, Season of the Witch, Jennifer Juniper, Wear Your Love Like Heaven, Hurdy Gurdy Man, There is a Mountain, The Fat Angel, Mad John’s Escape, Guinevere, and others. Many I haven’t heard in a long time. I’m going to spin a few now! Yeah, I love all that stuff, too. Actually, I like the vast majority of his work from the mid-60s to maybe very early 70s. I've gone on his YouTube channel looking for more recent albums, and they don't really do much for me. I've actually been playing this one occasionally over the past couple of weeks: Donovan - open road - 1970 I don't remember him being so blatantly anti-establishment as he comes across on this album, b...

For some reason, I’m rewatching a lot of 2002-2013 shows.
One of my all-time favorites: great writing, characters and performances.

It probably couldn’t be made today since the racial and gender/sexual humor is too good for current sensibilities.

Re: I Bonds: Bonds or Cash?

The special consideration is that you have to wait for a full year before redeeming I bonds. That makes them quite different from "cash." Even a one-year bank CD can almost certainly been redeemed early for a small penalty. Otherwise, they are much more cashlike than bondlike because they are free from interest rate risk. If interest rates rise, the (redemption) value of your bonds does not decline. This has a very interesting consequence that makes them different from marketable bonds. If you buy a $1,000 face value bond when interest rates are (say) 1%, and interest rates rise to (say) 5% before the bond matures, you wish you could exchange them for the newer, better bonds. But the way bond math works, you could do that but it ...

RIP Rudolph Isley, one of the co-founders of the Isley Brothers.

As great as The Beatles version of Twist & Shout is, I prefer the Isley Brothers.

This one is at the speed I'm used to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVP5gqDAthg

This one is noticeably slower: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTaqn8_gMR0. Ugh, don't bother with this one.
The Isleys' original "Twist and Shout" is great! But I still prefer the Beatles's versions, John tearing his voice up while Paul and George have fun singing backup. Here's a live performance, including John's cheeky introduction for the royal family & VIPs, at the Royal Variety Show in 1963.

Re: [What TV Show Have You Recently Watched?]

Just finished all six seasons of "The Americans" streaming on Hulu. Overall I liked it and am glad I watched it although I felt I had to suspend disbelief quite often. Like any show there are episodes that are kind of boring and some that I'll probably remember for a long time. I'm not sure but the last season felt a bit rushed but I thought the ending was decent if not a bit unsatisfying. The most memorable (and sad) scene for me of any TV series is a once exuberant character in "The Americans" who is briefly seen in another context, with a completely different demeanor, no fault of his/her own. Part of me wants a spin-off to follow what happened, but that would probably ruin it. I guess I like having the message about...

(Today's NYT.)

(Still better might be to redeem the I-Bonds to buy stock, and sell stock in your IRA to buy the TIPS, since stock is more tax-efficient than TIPS.)
I have done some of that.

Edited to move my statement out of the quote. Sorry for any confusion.

Re: What are you listening to now

In the 6-CD player in my 2005 car: Hard Days Night — The Beatles Wild Planet — B-52's More Songs About Buildings And Food — Talking Heads Get Your Wings — Aerosmith Songs In Red And Gray — Suzanne Vega Love And Theft — Bob Dylan I could go for a long ride with you in your car except I'd probably request we skip the last one and repeat the first one (selected songs from it -- all the Beatles ones and not the non-Beatles ones, if I am correctly remembering). I suggest going with the original (UK) version of "A Hard Day's Night," not the watered-down US version. Side 2 has some great songs, and Side 1 is a perfect pop record. All tracks are written by Lennon–McCartney Side one of the UK & Australian LP release (& soundtrack ...

Re: What are you listening to now

"Lola" -The Kinks. Got laid up after knee surgery this past 3 weeks and have taken to You Tube due to a lot of time on my hands. One of the genres of videos is the "first reaction to...". The premise is the reviewer is unaware of the song featured and posts a reaction to it. The reviewers are usually young and are unaware of music from the 50's through 80's. One of the songs I find fascinating is "Lola". Old timers like me(63) are well familiar with the song(released in 1970). The song is catchy and if you don't pay attention to the lyrics you will think it is a straightforward story of boy meets girl in a bar. Without revealing the surprising twist in the story, it is absolutely hilarious watching the reviewe...

Not a spoiler, just a fantasy episode :)

But I guess you have to watch a lot of TV to get it. I mixed "Suits" with "Homeland", "Mr. Robot", "Mad Men" and your pick of cartel shows (like "Breaking Bad".)

Plus we all know what happened to the Rachel character in real life. She actually did marry a prince. :)
Well done! Nice fantasy episode!

I'm on Season 8 and looking forward to the remainder, especially if the Season 9 conclusion is satisfying.

Re: What are you listening to now

Thank you for that suggestion! Listening to Let It Roll now. What a creative and proficient musician Harrison was. You've offered a gentle reminder of his work in several other posts, and I'm thankful for that. There's always something uplifting to hear in his playing. BTW, here's a link to a publicly accessible (without being logged in to Google?) playlist for Early Takes: George Harrison - Early Takes Volume 1 - 2012 Remember how in the movie Let It Be how frustrated he was because he could barely get any of his songs recorded as a Beatle and then how when All Things Must Pass came out we were all shocked at how far superior it was to anything Lennon and McCartney had each put out on their own. There's a lot more on this in "The Bea...
