Re: Possible to move in retirement without HUGE capital gain tax

I would look into selling the home under an installment contract, and combining that with the $500k primary residence exclusion. There is plenty of detail on the internet regarding how installment contracts work and are taxed, but the gist is that you only pay gain as you receive payments from your...

Re: Possible to move in retirement without HUGE capital gain tax

Now if they did not move, it is my understanding that the estate tax step up in basis would eventually kick in, the value of the home becomes part of the estate and the estate tax exclusion and would eliminate this capital gains tax. They see this as money that could fund the grandchildren's educat...

Re: Possible to move in retirement without HUGE capital gain tax

I should have mentioned, they are in their early 70s and health is very good.

They don't have much in the way of investment in taxable accounts for tax loss harvesting, unfortunately. Thanks

Possible to move in retirement without HUGE capital gain tax

My parents moved into a HCOL area in the 1970's, bought a home for about 100k that has increased in value to 1.6M, and are now looking to move to a lower cost of living area to be closer to their grandchildren. Its a good problem to have, but we are running the figures and it looks like to sell the ...

Re: Bookshelf speakers under $300

I am late joining this thread and I dont know about most of the other speakers mentioned, but I have a pair of the NHT Superzero bookshelf speakers and I think they sound great and have a nice piano black finish, 61 on amazon now which is about half what I paid when I bought some a few years ago. NH...

Re: Sports fan trying to cut cable

Definitely look into Playstation Vue. It is possibly the worst branding in history, whenever I explain it to people they are under the mistaken impression that you need a playstation. We do not have a playstation and stream it on a Roku Ultra which is fast and has a nice remote. The picture quality ...

Re: When is it OK to not go through car insurance after you've been hit?

One of my friends had a story like this, in the end the person who damaged his car did not come through on paying the money to get the repairs performed due to various excuses, he did not collect the insurance information at the time and so much time had passed at that point he just gave up and paid...

Re: Chase Bank is the Devil

I think that charging for "direct connect" is pretty standard practice for the big banks. Have you looked into downloading the "web connect" file from chase? "Web connect" is almost always free and is available I don't have chase, but with my business account at Citibank it is a little bit hidden on...

Re: Fixing diamond ring

In southern California, Robbins Brothers repaired my wife's diamond ring while we waited. They allowed us to look at the GIA serial number inscribed on the diamond before and after the work was performed.

Re: Kitchen features

We moved into a newer house with an updated kitchen. It has a wall convection oven which is nice, I am not a gourmet but it seems to cook faster and more evenly. Also it has a microwave oven built into the vent hood, I am not crazy about the look but not having a microwave on the counter provides mo...
