Deciphering Company Travel Policy

Wanted to get some thoughts on what my company policy is for air travel.

The policy lists the flight class for all employees for any flights as Economy Plus.
For VP/Sr Director and up (which I fall into), it states for any flights >1800 miles, flight class is Business Class

The next level is for Executives, which lists all flights as Business / First Class.

So my question is, for flights >1800 miles, what is defined as Business Class for domestic US flights if the starting approved flight class is Economy Plus?
Is it domestic First Class? Or does it not really even exist as airlines don't have business class for domestic flights?

Private disability policy sanity check

I have an outside disability policy through Principal covering 60% which equates to $6865/mo. Ive had it for 3 years now and my income has risen fairly substantially. I applied for an increase to $10,155 and the premium increase from $157/mo to $242/mo. I work for a fairly late stage startup that offers an employee disability policy but I've opted to keep my external policy just in case. I did not opt in to the employee policy.

So my question is: The monthly premium isn't necessarily chump change so is the $242/mo reasonable or should I shop around/use employee policy?

If you're relocating for the new opportunity, is there a particular reason you would still choose to live 40+ mins away from the office? If you could cut that in half (or more) with the location of your new house, that would be a huge benefit.

That said, you're young - make the move, take the money, and enjoy the adventure that 3 day weekends will provide!

Re: [Getting a promotion, how do I negotiate a raise?]

I was recently promoted and the team I'm responsible for increased from ~25 to ~100. I received a 10% increase in base, and therefore a 10% increase in bonus dollars as our bonus is paid as a % of base. It was presented to me as "here is your new opportunity, your new title is x, your new salary is y". There wasn't any negotiation and, although I have a great relationship with my superiors, it would've been an odd conversation to ask for more....

Large Windfall - Advice Needed

Due to an employee secondary offering, I will be able to liquidate some shares to the tune of ~$250k. From a tax perspective, this will be ordinary income so we will be around $450-500k for the year, married filing jointly. We will fully fund both 401ks. My question is: is it worth funding an IRA, then doing Roth conversions for both of us or better to just fund a brokerage account and have accessibility if needed for the next 20+ years. I assume the answer is do both, but I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle vs just putting the funds in a brokerage account.

Any other tax strategies to take advantage of? I don't have a high deductible medical plan, so no HSA.

Having lived in Dallas for 5 years, if the unit is going to fail, it will fail in the middle of the summer. That's also the time when HVAC companies are the busiest. So it may not be uncommon to go 3 days with A/C due to scheduling, parts ordering, etc. There is no way in hell (literally and figuratively) I'd want to go 3+ days in the Texas heat.

You don't really need to read every document in full before or at the closing table for a refi. The only doc you really need to pay attention to is the Final Closing Disclosure that spells out where the money is coming/going. Once you sign, you then have 3 whole days to take your time and read till your heart is content. Even then though, if you don't agree with a specific term, you have a right to cancel the transaction. But at least you're not wasting the notary's time (who's job it is to notarize your signature, not ensure you like or understand every term on every page).

Re: New home purchase, how to keep the costs low ?

Agree with what others posted. Option out the items that would be difficult or invasive to install later. We just closed on our new build in April. I made to sure option out wiring for ceiling fans, extra outdoor outlets (including a 6' high outlet for a outdoor TV, natural gas stub on the patio, recessed lighting in the living areas, etc. We did some other options as well - flooring, cabinets, etc but we had a budget and kept to it. I also did research of the cost of doing the upgrades after closing on our own. The options we went with were close enough in price that it would be worth it to not have the hassle of finding contractors, arranging scheduling, etc.

After the 2008 crash, proving the ability to repay is required on most traditional mortgages. This is calculated using the monthly payment. If you don't have sufficient provable monthly income to support paying the monthly payment, then you're going to run into problems.

Bottom line - the bank can't take your word for it (as we all found out in 2008).

Purchase a Cosco travel car seat. (Not Costco). It's very light and easy to carry. If you are not purchasing a separate seat, then most airlines let you check the car seat for free. Then take a car into the city.

I would seriously consider bringing the stroller. Consider nap time while you're walking, eating at a restaurant, etc. There is no way in heck I'd just assume I'm going to carry a child for miles and miles a day. I'm sure you physically could, but why would you want to?

2. What was the reason for termination?

If the leave was approved, then you were terminated through no fault of your own, I'm not sure why severance wasn't offered.

If you want to see how crazy your neighbors are join nextdoor.com. People argue over the most inane stuff. It gets pitiful after a while.

That being said, I would recommend to join the board. I served on the HOA in our old neighborhood of 700+ homes that included a clubhouse, golf course, tennis, pool, etc so lots of expenses and maintenance. I found it was better to be on the 'inside' and know what was going on than to be on the outside knowing nothing. It opened my eyes to how hard our board worked and it was actually a rewarding experience. The ones who complain the most are the ones who contribute the least so I took pride in 'doing my duty' in the neighborhood.

They are on someone's body, in the washer or in the dryer. The rare clean clothes end up on the dining room floor or table where they get put on a body eventually. They can be worn for two days in a row even if they are dirty. Example: Everybody eats out of their big bowl. There are ...

Re: Niece divorce - house questions

I can't offer advice on the divorce front, but the current mortgage lender will more than likely not let her assume the mortgage. (Move it to her name only). Most mortgage agreements do not allow assumptions and even if it does, your niece will have to qualify as if she were to obtain the mortgage on her own. it doesn't just 'move over' to her. She needs to be prepared to obtain a new loan in her name only if she is granted the house.

If she doesn't think she can obtain a new loan, she doesn't need to agree to any divorce terms stating that she will. The divorce decree will not override any loan agreements.

I don't have any advice regarding the taxability of funds received from the sale of a property that was surrendered in BK, but then sold by the county for more than they were owed, then he has to pay taxes on it. We just relocated from Dallas, TX to Reno, NV so I can tell you experiences from both no income tax states. Dallas is huge, job market is great, RE is cheap compared to Reno. However, it can take an hour to drive across town. Also, a pool is a must during the summer. You don't go outside unless you're sitting next to a pool. Reno is a much smaller town. You can literally be anywhere within 15 minutes. However, the RE prices are prob 30% higher. It's a very outdoorsy culture as it's a dry climate and high desert so temps are more mild. Also, having Lake Tahoe and the ski resorts less than 45 mins away helps as well. It still gets hot (mid-90's) but with no humidity it feels much cooler than Dallas. Also, it actually gets chilly in the evenin...

For me a major part of this decision would include how far will I be from family. I think you should take a quick trip to Dallas before you decide. As far as weather, it is not hot in Dallas for 9 months. Well I guess that depends on what you consider as hot. Dallas average highs are at or below 80 for 7 months out of the year so I would not classify it as hot. Depends on how you define “hot.” For many Americans, months of 80 degree weather is indeed hot. The fact you reference 80 degrees as a benchmark shows how hot it is. OP is coming from Northern California and Dallas will most likely seem rather hot. Correct - but the 3 months a year it is HOT! I wouldn't want to have to clock in/out necessarily but I've definitely had to badge in/out of the building I worked in. Not the same as a timecard, but I"m sure they could use that data against me if needed.

I'm sure the company is wanting to ensure the people they are paying to work 40 hours a week are actually doing so or using correct PTO codes to make up the difference.

It's not illegal to track time. They can't dock pay, but they can surely reprimand if you're not working the assigned shift.

The fact that you're not disclosing the make and model (some models are notorious for various defects), the fact that you don't know what they think you did to it, and the fact that you're willing to cough up $5k to repair it when everyone is telling you to take action to the contrary tells me that you're not really disclosing everything on here. Personal LTD vs group LTD insurance

Hi all -

I started appx 8 months ago with a fintech startup and at the time, they did not offer a group LTD plan. I obtained my own personal policy through Principal and it's around $1680/yr ($140/mo). But of course, it covers me if I cannot do my actual job, not any job. My company recently began offering group LTD coverage for $300/yr ($25/mo). They both cover 60% of my income.

Is it worth it to keep the personal LTD plan? I'm thinking it is because it's more comprehensive and goes with me in future endeavors...

Anyone have any thoughts on this as the price difference is large enough to make me question it....

It's a no-brainer financially.

Plus, you mentioned that your in-laws are in town, but they're not keeping your kids all day for free so, although they won't see them as often, a 6 hour drive isn't terrible and totally do-able over a weekend.

The difference in $150k a year and your current $112k doesn't make up for $4400/mo pension in 12 years & certainly not $8000+ in 15 years.

I would hang on - you're making 6 figures, 7 weeks PTO, 40 hours a week, have the opportunity to work OT. Your 59 year old self will thank you when you have $8000+ mo coming in.....

The only way I would consider leaving would be for $200k+ base and some kind of stock or bonus plan that would allow you to quickly stock pile savings.

Keep in mind - even if you got the above $200k+ job, if you got laid off in 5 years, then what? Even solid companies make moves internally that may leave you on the outside looking in....

This. If someone wanted to pay me $100,000/year to check my e-mail, I'm riding that as long as I can.
Been there. Not fun after the second day. It wrecks one's sanity.
I agree - I wouldn't plan on staying for the sake of staying at a miserable job. First good opportunity to leave, I would. However, until then, I would feel better collecting a pay check while job hunting vs sitting at home job hunting.

The 6th Floor Museum is excellent and if you've ever watched anything on the Kennedy assassination, the museum is in the School Book Depository building in Dealy Plaza. The whole plaza is still eerily the same as it was in 1963.

Also +1 for Top Golf. It's a good time and you can eat and drink while you're there.
