Re: Whether to lapse term life insurance

I think others have covered a lot of important points - peace of mind, need of insurance, etc. But I can share a bit of info about mortality rates and give my $0.02. The 2017 CSO mortality tables are the max amount of what insurers can charge. These are a bit higher than would be expected. https://w...

Re: Variable Universal Life Insurance Experts - Seems Like a No Brainer - Please Read

3) I am in a position where my assets at death will almost certainly be in excess of the estate tax threshold of $11.2M. I can both eliminate the estate tax through a life insurance policy and gift it to a trust and still enjoy a step up in basis when inherited. What am I missing? Why is this not a...

Re: Umbrella Insurance - Worst Case

Thanks everyone. I'll look for quotes and if they aren't ridiculous, I'll probably buy it. If they require non-owner car insurance, are expensive, or otherwise inconvenient, I may not. If I don't buy, I'll definitely keep it in mind in the future, as NW increases and lifestyle changes. Here's what g...

Umbrella Insurance - Worst Case

I've just started thinking about umbrella insurance and I'm wondering if I should get it. About me: Married, 27 & 25 $550,000 Net Worth (almost all in stock index funds, otherwise bank) No debt $160,000 Income $120,000 Spouse Income $90,000 Annual Spending (conservative guess based on past spending ...

Re: Sun Survivorship Universal Life LP3 life insurance help

One other thought - have you considered a viatical settlement? You may be able to sell your life insurance policy to a company for much more than the cash value. Think about it - the value of the life insurance policy is max(cash value, death benefit less premiums). I already argued that "death bene...

Re: Sun Survivorship Universal Life LP3 life insurance help

Based on current rates, the policy will expire in 2025 at FIL age 88, then It offers lapse protection until 100. Have you gotten an inforce illustration recently? If so, does it show that the policy runs out of cash value at age 88, but the death benefit remains inforce until age 100? Does the illu...

Re: Owners of cars with 'autopilot' like features: Do you fly less and drive more for longer trips?

I own a Tesla Model 3 with AP and I'd agree with many posters - it's nice and reduces fatigue, but I wouldn't change my habits significantly. Maybe there as some middle-distance trips that I may drive instead, but these tend to be somewhat rare. I think fatigue is greatly influenced by traffic on th...

You may also consider the new plug-in hybrid version too. It's a bit more expensive, but has a tax credit that mostly offsets the increase in price.

Re: The proper use of the term FIRE

Who died and made you the king of FIRE? But your point is reasonable. I could argue the "FI" (financial independent) half of FIRE is what you're calling "rich", but that's just semantics. I feel like there are 2 things that make people gravitate towards FIRE, even though they may not retire early. 1...

I actually ran into a similar situation at work. A coworker wanted to model stock returns using Monte Carlo approach, while I preferred the historical "Firecalc" method. Just as you mentioned, Monte Carlo can have issues. The way my coworker used was assuming a normal distribution of stock market re...

Re: Disability Insurance - Return of Premium Rider

Well, one item to consider is you have to keep the policy in place till age 67 to cash in the rider...Do you plan to work that long? I cancelled all my DI when I retired... well in advance of 67.... Remember, the company doesn't offer things at cost... If you stay insured thru 67 and never use the ...

Re: What response to a health insurance claim denial? - Test found a problem, claim for test denied anyways

Just wanted to chime in an let you know I was in the same situation a number of years ago. You're not alone! Good luck to you. I had a scan following a broken bone that happened to also show I have kidney tumors. Very odd for someone in their early 20s. They did a biopsy to confirm. Doctors thought ...

Re: First Model Year Acura

I hear it all the time - "Acura is just a Honda with an Acura badge". I don't think this is true. Check our CR's most reliable brands ranking for 2019. Honda comes in at 12 - not bad. Acura is 28 out of 30. https://www.consumerreports.org/car-reliability-owner-satisfaction/who-makes-the-most-reliabl...

Re: Life Insurance - Where to Find?

Here's my 2 cents. It's not the mainstream advice, but it makes sense to me and is a more specific rule of thumb than a straight % of income. I think this will show you need less insurance than others recommend, but hopefully you will feel more comfortable understanding your need better. If you were...

Re: Describe Your Perfect Life Insurance Product

Many here achieve similar to what you propose by laddering their policies. Would one policy that steps down save a significant amount of money? How else would this differ other than having one policy vs multiple? Is direct to consumer legal? We assume underwriting costs us $200-300 per policy or so...

I got married recently. It was a good day, but it was quite stressful in the weeks leading up to it and it was pricey. I recently read this post from a blog I follow and am a bit jealous we didn't have a wedding more like this.

Describe Your Perfect Life Insurance Product

Life insurance actuary and Boglehead here. I'm interested in what this forum thinks the perfect life insurance product is. With any luck, I can get Megacorp to sell this product. Here are my thoughts based on comments I've seen on this site: -Decreasing death benefit (from $X to $X*0.5) over 20/25/3...

Re: Why Zero (or Negative) Interest Rates Could Someday Make Sense

I still don't buy it. Why would I ever invest $100 in a bond for the chance (<100% - from default) that it would mature at $99 (or less) if I could instead hold cash for 100% chance of maturing at $100? Even if there was no default risk, it doesn't make sense to me.

Re: Mega backdoor Roth:. Anyone got their employer to change plan to allow it?

We just got the Mega Backdoor option last week! A few coworkers/friends and I emailed HR about a year ago asking for it. They responded saying they already have looked into it, but were concerned about low earners not using it. I let them know that I was one of those "low earners" and would use it, ...

After-tax Contribution 401k Questions (Mega Backdoor Roth)

My employer recently announced they will add after-tax contributions to our 401k plan. They will also allow in-plan Roth conversions and will even have a process in place to automatically make these conversions. I'm pumped I will be able to use the Mega Backdoor Roth IRA! My background: I'm 26, fina...

Re: 2018 Toyota Yaris

I watch a lot of Consumer Reports videos about cars. They say the Yaris and Yaris iA are completely different cars. The Yaris iA was developed by Mazda and sold to Toyota and rebranded. CR really likes the Yaris iA. They say it drives well, is a good value, has all the safety features Toyota offers,...
