Re: 2011 Nissan Altima - Transmission Failure

Before assuming you need a transmission replacement, I recommend doing some research. I have fixed "failed" transmissions on two occasions, and each time the cost was less than $100. For whatever reason, a lot of people including professional mechanics assume that a transmission is some kind of unk...

Re: How to Start CC Churning

Thank you all for the responses...these are good thoughts My takeaways: I hadn't set any specific goals yet, so that's the first place I'll start. In any event, I'll likely start with Chase due to their reward restrictions and look closely at how the Reserve/Freedom might fit into my long term plans...

How to Start CC Churning

Hi all, I've been leaning towards starting some "light" CC churning since I have a solid CC score and dont plan on purchasing a house in the next 2+ years (so hopefully FICO scores would have time to bounce back before a mortgage). What advice do you have for those starting out? E.g., from my resear...

Re: Any Boglehead powerlifters?

I've been using the nSuns 4-day routine the past few months with great results (as a intermediate-low lifter): https://www.reddit.com/r/nSuns/comments/8q3v5t/modified_nsuns_advanced_google_sheets_routine/ It's about time to switch to a new program and am looking for one with a bodybuilding bent...an...

Re: Where to invest $50K+ down payment money for five years?

Jesteroftheswamp, 1) You have 25K emergency fund. 2) You are saving 25K to 50K per year. 3) If you do not keep the extra 25K as the house down payment in reserve, you could invest this 25K in the stock index fund. If and when you choose to buy, you have A) 25K in the emergency fund. B) Your monthly...

Re: Leave career (fortune 200) and join the peace corps?

RPCV here, and have tons of friends and even family who are also RPCVs. I echo the folks who said to think carefully about it, but overall I generally recommend people do it, if possible. With the recent changes in the application process, you get to apply to specific countries - I didn't hear you m...

Re: College laptop for fall 2018 freshman

Son likes to program and has done so up til now using windows-based computers. We are buying him a MacBook Pro as it seems they are the computer of preference for many that program plus we thought he should know how to use both systems. Hopefully he likes it and it is a good machine as they are not...

Re: How do you quantify the risk differential between 85/15 and 70/30?

This Marketwatch article says that as a general rule of thumb, "every additional 10% of your portfolio in equities adds about one half of a percentage point per year to your return." If that's correct (perhaps someone more experienced can speak to it), it should be a helpful way to look at the retur...

Re: Advice on Building a Portfolio from Scratch?

Duckie, Thank you for the recommendations - I looked into them further and they seemed to align very well with what I felt comfortable with. I've gone ahead and purchased some of each of the three you recommended. I also appreciate the recommendation to contribute more to my existing retirement acco...

Advice on Building a Portfolio from Scratch?

Hello, I've never invested before, and after years of semi-volunteer work (Peace Corps, etc.) and grad school, I'm finally gainfully employed and have enough income to start having my savings work for me. I knew nothing about investing, but after having lurked in these threads and read as many guide...
