Re: confused about 401K IRS limits
The catch-up contribution is allowed to be on top of the overall limit of 57,000 for 2020. My guess is that the excess amount will be taken out from the after-tax account with the prorated gain.

I would do the following:
1) transfer Trad gains (amount above the non deductible contribution) to Rollover
2) transfer Rollover to 401k
3) convert Trad to Roth

I’m a 3 funder but it’s hard to stick with Total Bond when yield is lower than Total Stock. Dividend for Total International Stock in 2020 was 2.38% or twice that of Total Bond. Perhaps it’s time to do some tactical asset allocation in my 401k to increase the yield.

I use number #1 in 2nd half of the year after reaching the annual limit for pretax contribution. Then #3 at year end to sweep into in-plan Roth. I avoid #2 because it may take several days for the rollover to complete.

It’s true that commingling is no longer an issue. In fact, you can un-commingle the non cost basis amount into a new account. Places like Fidelity will allow you to assign that new traditional IRA account type as a Rollover IRA. This should make it easy to roll it back to a 401k.
