Re: sanity check

IMO you would gain a lot by moving to Austin, Nashville, Raleigh Durham, Boulder etc. My career/network is in Bay Area. I hear Austin commute is now brutal and housing keeps rising. Boulder has been $$ for a while now. Nashville is super interesting as well as Chattanooga. It's possible I can work ...

more info: We're early 40s. I work at blue-chip fortune 100 companies that are stable. I think my monthly net is above $11k ($~5500 per paycheck after tax, healthcare, and 401k max). Mortgage is $4500, so that's $6500 per month after mortgage payment. I have not started the new job yet and basing t...

sanity check

I have a tech job in Bay Area and it was a real stretch to buy a house last year. Wife is SAHM, two kids. We're behind the curve in savings, need to pump away $$ for retirement. I do have a 200sqft studio on my property that can be rented for $1500/mo and wife wants to work part time. TC: $350-370 d...

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

Eh, I don't get it. The RSUs are not worthless, and should be included in the calculation.

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

Stop looking at unvested RSUs as $anything. I had a couple million in stock options back in the early 2000's. Until it all went under water. Then I had nothing in stock options and it became easy to leave for a better job. Ugh, that sucks. Those were dark times for a lot of people. I’m sitting up a...

Noticed you wrote that your 401k contribution as "15%", which of a 330k income is nearly $50k for a year. Wonder how you do that, are you a corp to corp consultant using a employer solo 401k plan?
just started a deferred compensation plan.

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

1) you're probably correct, although
2) I was thinking I'd do this in a different market. Have close family in NY and CHI areas.

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

Interesting thought about rental/roofstock. I think it will come down to the time commitment involved and how the market does. We carry $3-5k on a CC but pay that off using dividends (We're seeing ~$3k in dividends every quarter). No debt- we pay cash for cars. Kaiser insurance for the fam and I'm m...

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

All great advice. I know I got lucky (plus worked my ass off ;) and know I need to go head down for 4 years (and know I can/will). The whole plan centers around keeping the job/RSUs. I started out as an IC, and now am Sr Director. VP possible next year. Running a big team with a ton of responsibilit...

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

I worked for a series of tech startups. This one popped 4 years ago, got bought for 1B, and I started saving. 5% employer match. 150k total in 401k. No backdoor Roth's with my wife (although I can ask if she's interested tonight). 529s have ~10k ea, contributing 10k yr, aggressive index fund. eligib...

Re: general "am I on the right track" question

yeah, I take the point. I could rebalance the APPL toward the index fund. CSCO I'm really bullish about- our BU is part of a big corp transformation. dirtylizard, You got to be joking! I would not be keeping any CSCO stock. Especially if you are working for CSCO. Too many eggs in one basket. KlangF...

Be smarter about buying individual stocks.
AAPL has given me 70% returns. CSCO 3500% returns (got a bunch of ISOs at a startup Cisco bought). Future investments getting shoveled into the SP index fund. What should I do differently?
