Re: At what point did you prioritize health over money?
I walked off the job in 2000 because the work environment was making me sick. I did swing by the HR office on my way out, to validate my retirement benefits. The place was so ethically compromised, with 2 coworkers I swear were psychopaths, it gave me ulcers. I should have done it more methodically but I was extremely well paid (golden handcuffs). Turned out to be a great decision that completely reshaped my life. I would call it a health decision, because I was literally having trouble getting up in the morning knowing I was going to have to go to that job. More importantly, I did not want even the remotest chance of becoming like those other people. Curious, what did you pivot to? i want to do the same at times, but no clue what would be...

I'm impressed she did it. I'd gladly give DW $100 for showing that kind of initiative!Broken Man 1999 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 26, 2024 5:11 pmFunny story. Our downstairs bathroom was whistling. I couldn't hear it as I was asleep and my CPAP machine makes a bit of noise.
DW woke me up to give me the report, and she had already researched the problem and found the solution. Her first instinct is to call a plumber, so I told her I would give her $100 to fix it. She went to Ace Hardware and got a new flush valve. She had to get a neighbor to help her with the nut on the outside of the toilet.
So I bought the parts, and gave DW $100. Still cheaper than calling a plumber.

Re: Adios, Vanguard
Is there anyone from Vanguard on Bogleheads? Any official representative? One question I would ask is if Vanguard does not want to continue to service customers less than a certain asset level such as $10 million, and focus on collecting expense ratio fees of ETF's from us below that level. Calling Vanguard has been so hit or miss. Today's call was mixed, but ended with problem solved (I had checked hide zero balance accounts which somehow hid a non-zero cash available to trade). It is interesting that Vanguard does not charge closing fees. Seems like they want us to leave! They also don't reimburse fees you incur when transferring in. Based on nothing but my untrained observations, I think Vanguard wants to be Blackrock. Collect the ERs a...

Walmart bonds are not callable. They are bullets. You rarely will see callable IG bonds.TiredLawyer wrote: ↑Fri Oct 20, 2023 6:16 amOut of curiosity, I checked what some 10-year Corporate bonds were yielding. It looks like Walmart 10-year bonds which are also callable are currently at 5.5%. What gives? I would expect that GSEs would have better credit risk than all corporations. I can’t imagine a world where the US would allow GSEs to default.

i've gone from almost no duration (75/25 stock/stable value fund) to a duration of around 6-7 (VBTLX, VTEAX, VPALX) starting in 2022. I've done it slowly, and now I own 0 stable value. my goal was to lock in these rates today, maybe they go higher, maybe not, but i feel really good about 4-5% and not worrying about reinvestment rate risk.

Re: Corporate vs Govt Bond use
I have been in corporate bond investor my entire career (helping run several different IG and HY bond funds). For most folks treasuries is fine. Total bond market fund has enough corporates to be totally acceptable. Are you asking specifically on individual bonds? or bond funds? I wouldn't recommend individual corp bond purchases for many DIY investors. All kinds of things can go wrong to individual companies, across the ratings spectrum. Why 10 years and in? Is this a rate/duration issue? Where i sit, corporates have a big challenge ahead with higher rates. same as us with personal finances (mortages, student loans). cash flows are just starting to come under pressure as debt is being refinanced. some companies are finding it extremely cha...

According to the Vanguard website, the VBTLX YTD return as of yesterday closing (4 October 2023) is -1.75% (minus) not a positive 4.9%.
The SEC yield is 4.87%.
Maybe you got the YTD return confused with the SEC yield of 4.87%.

Re: BND exceeding my patience - need something different
Stocks are impossible to market time, but for bond funds you can look at the yield and decide whether you want it or not. In late 2021 the yield on my Total Bond Market and IT Muni Bonds were so low it made no sense to hold them anymore - I was not being compensated fairly for the duration risk, so I switched to ultra-short and cash. Now, I look at Total Bond with a SEC Yield of 4.81% and it still makes no sense to me. You are supposed to be compensated for taking duration risk, the rule of thumb I learned on this site is 25 basis points per year of duration. With MMF paying > 5% I would still be getting a negative premium to assume 5 years of duration risk? Uhh, no thanks. When the yield curve compensates me for that risk I'll take it, wh...

there are plenty of cases where cd/t bills/etc make sense for portfolios. My worry is how many people are DYI overhauling their fixed income allocation in reaction to seeing bond funds decline. either because they don't understand them, or because they don't trust them.....That's all fine, but def makes DYI management more complicated. some of those people would benefit from a financial advisor just to stop the tinkering

Re: Why Not a Bank CD Instead of a Bond Fund?
I never like bond fund due to its complexity and lack of clear expectation in yield and principal preservation because it could be volatile as demonstrated in the past 2 years. I bought total bond fund for my fixed income in the past because (TINA - There Is No Alternative) due to the extended period of time with 0% interest rate. But as soon as the interest began to climb, I started hunting for direct CD all over the nation to put my fixed income allocation into and I was able to get 2% to 5% in different duration in the past 5 years or so. I just rebalanced and I put everything into a t-bill ladder, CD ladder and MMF earning +-5% in the next 5 years. Interest rate could/will drop in the future, but bond funds don't behave like stocks and...

man so much bias right now towards equities and against bonds....which to me is ludicrous, but not surprising giving recent performance, which everyone grabs at.
while i'm still heavily equities, now is a fantastic time to allocate to bonds imo. i've gone from nothing but stable value to medium and long duration funds at these yields.
people seem to have no patience with fixed income. i kind of get it, as i'm a corporate bond investor for a living and it can get complex. But the basic index funds from vanguard and fidelity make it incredibly easy. The irrational asset class is equities, bonds are quite formulaic.

Re: EV Federal Tax Credit 7500 eligibility question
Does not look like you're eligible. From IRS website:
To qualify, you must:
Buy it for your own use, not for resale
Use it primarily in the U.S.
In addition, your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) may not exceed:
$300,000 for married couples filing jointly
$225,000 for heads of households
$150,000 for all other filers
You can use your modified AGI from the year you take delivery of the vehicle or the year before, whichever is less. If your modified AGI is below the threshold in 1 of the two years, you can claim the credit.

I've had a mach-e EV for a year. Range is very accurate with what Ford advertised (actually even a bit better). I have heard friends complain about Tesla's range not matching what is advertised, but who knows if that's true.
I spent $1,000 to have a post put next to driveway with a 240 outlet. It works fantastically well for charging. i think all this range anxiety is overdone, but i get it. I felt that same way before buying as well.

I have the standard range mustang mach e for just over a year. It gets around 210 miles or so on a 90% charge in warmer weather. This past winter the range bottomed at around 160 miles.
Range has never been an issue similar to what others have posted, b/c I charge at home, and mostly local driving. If driving a longer trip, I have to usually stop and charge anyway. My personal feeling is most people who have not yet purchased an EV tend to exaggerate their range (on a single charge) needs.

We also live just outside Philly (Delaware County) and have three girls between ages 4-9. More recently picked up our travel game after using Ocean City, NJ as our main vacation spot. We still love the 1-1.5 hour proximity of Jersey shore and family town vibe of Ocean City the most, and do several trips there during summer. But have really enjoyed recent trips to Disney, Maine (mostly Portland area), DC, and the Caribbean (Cayman islands). We are doing Chicago next. Other future trips in the hopper are Niagara Falls, Outerbanks, Poconos, and prob a west coast trip.
Locally jersey shore and poconos are solid options but i'm assuming you already know that.

Re: Finding undervalued corporate bonds?
I would rely on the yield over the rating to assess risk. This. I invest in corporate bonds professionally. Ratings are not reliable at all, I can give you several examples of highly rated companies that should have had a CCC rating but agencies were VERY slow to re-rate. Especially a several notch move. Investors are always in front of the actual ratings action. In the Comerica example, the 4/21 rating date refers to the date Moody's moved to negative outlook so a downgrade is likely coming shortly. As others correctly point out, you also need to drill into the yield here. 4-5% upside for a couple months if i'm right in something like this, doesn't feel that rewarding. Knowing the alternative if wrong, could be massive downside. My recomm...

Therapy has helped me a lot and we agree I need to make a change in the near term. But despite being excellent in many other ways, the therapist has struggled to help me figure out what that next career move should be. Instead she also suggested finding a career coach, which I plan to do soon.
Also I highly recommend meditation. It has greatly improved my mood despite work frustrations. Takes time and patience but it really works

Late 30s
1. Chose a high paying field that I could start right out of undergrad
2. Grew income substantially, and stayed in field even after no longer being passionate about it. To me this is the hardest decision I wrestle with. Everything else I list here has been super easy.
3. Very little to no lifestyle creep
4. Starting around age 30, save 70% of income
5. Invest 75/25 stock/bond index

one company issued a month ago to fund an acquisition. one month later they are back with another deal. this time its a PIK toggle holdco (meaning they can skip the interest payments, and just let it accrue to principal) and being holdco, little to no recovery value. use of proceeds? a dividend to the sponsor. repaying themselves for the equity they just put in the acquisition a month ago.

Corporate borrowing at absurd levels. Forget about the low rates, just the sheer size of some of the corporate balance sheets is alarming. And on the high yield side, companies getting access to that market who have no right being there because investors are so yield starved. Seeing 2% HY deals getting done in insane, i don't care where rates are. it creates insanely bad behavior
