Re: Is HCOLA better than LCOL??

Keep in mind cost of living is not static over the length of a lifetime. Even trends that have been developing over decades can reverse.

That cost of living map above was very interesting. I wondered what it looked like in 1960 or what it will look like in 2060.

Seattle in 1972, Atlanta in 1972, Detroit in 1972 are not the same now.

Re: Why do TIAA CREF index funds have such high fees?

Why do TIAA CREF index funds have such high fees? Because employers sign contracts that employees cannot roll funds out. So I am stuck there for 30+ years. They could make the ER =10% and I cannot roll over to Vanguard or my current 401K. I am forced to be there even though I left that job 20 years ago. :thumbsdown Your 401k is stuck there? Or are there certain accounts/investments that you couldn't directly roll over and would have to sell? TIAA Trad I know isn't "mutual fund" liquid. I'm fairly certain my 401k there is fully portable but a few of my investment choices may not be - Trad and Real Estate perhaps. I left it there since the target date I had most of my money in was pretty cheap. About 5 years ago my employer finally...

My wife and I just finished Season 1 Episode 2 of "Happy Valley" on Kanopy. Think the movie Fargo, except in the UK. Similarities: -Strong female police officer, a bit older, who is competent and very serious about her job. -Bumbling "mastermind" recruits kidnappers to kidnap innocent victim, daughter of wealthy businessman well known to our mastermind. -Kidnappers are more vicious than our mastermind anticipated -Things are not going as planned -Everyone speaks with strong local accent. Location is big part of the story and mood. The show has an 8.5 IMDb rating, which is very high. We have to rewind occasionally because of the strong accents, but overall it is pretty good so far. It sounds like you have thought about some of these as options. https://www.bogleheads.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=417041 Here are some possibilities I identified in the thread liked above. IMDb gives it a 6.7, which I think is just about right. If it had a different ending I would have given it an 8.0. No spoilers, so I will say no more. It was a very weird movie, but in a good way.

I was thinking if I move into my rental property if my tenant doesn't accept my new offer (I'll know by 1/22) that I might get a fish tank. Was thinking of something not too big, perhaps a 20 gallon or 29 gallon. I found a single bristlenose pleco in a tank very effective at keeping the tank clean. Bristlenose don't get too big for a 20 or 30 gallon tank. I had my 20 gallon tank overflow (still not sure why) and had to move the two plecos in together in my 30 gallon tank. Soon, I had 42 fry and about 120 more eggs I had to throw away. It was really cool watching the dad fan water over the eggs and protect the babies. I did the hobby for about 10 years. I would say it was worth it, but finally changing the water got old so I gave it up. But...

Thoughts? I actually really like this fund, if held in a qualified account. I always thought it best to compare FZIPX to VSMAX (Vanguard Small Cap) or similar, and not just look at the fund names. I regret putting VXUS/VTIAX in taxable. Once I hit over $600 in dividends and had to do the extra form, I only got $250 of the $770 foreign tax I paid. If I could do it over, I would have put it all in VTI and not worried about the FTC. VXUS is a lot less tax efficient.

Mine is similar. I am currently simplifying and my wife's limited 401k option makes it not as straightforward, but in general:

For US:
65% Large Cap
35% Mid/Small Cap (FZIPX/VTMSX)

So mid/small has about twice the proportion as in the total market.

I mirror this in my international with using VSS (intl small cap) for the tilt.

The Fidelity Zero Extended Market Index has underperformed the Fidelity Extended Market Index since the former has been available. I disagree; it is a wonderful fund (as long as held in a qualified account). I believe you made the error of simply looking at the name of the fund and not at what it held, when it held it, and why. Often, I will read a thread on Bogleheads where the OP or a reply will comment "Well, that is a good problem to have!". What is your biggest "Good Problem to Have"?

For me, it is my tax deferred accounts grew faster than I had anticipated and now I have to plan how to unwind those positions (Roth conversions, etc) while not creating tax or other unintended consequences (IRMAA, RMDs, estate tax issues, etc,). While it is a problem, it is "a good problem to have".

Any help is appreciated.
I think you don't need to calculate it - you enter your yearly SS contributions in column C, and the index factor (Column D) is then used to calculate the index wages (column E)
That is my understanding as well. That is the one of the main things that author updates every year.

Re: What to invest in Roth for 13 year old

WhiteMaxima wrote: Thu Nov 23, 2023 11:37 am I am helping my 13 year old invest in her Roth IRA. 60 year investment horizon, what I should invest in? I am thinking 100% equity, growth type, Vanguard index or ETF, DCA every year. VUG?
I have been funding my kids' Roth since they got their first W2 income at 15. I settled on this:

50% FID Zero Total Market (FZROX)
25% FID Zero Extended (FZIPX)
25% FID Zero International (FZILX)

I don't re-balance. I figure for a 50+ year portfolio, they can be very aggressive. FZIPX behaves remarkably similar to Vanguard Small Cap Index Adm (VSMAX), so basically they have a large mid/small tilt.

I assume your daughter has qualified income?

Anyone Using Kanopy or Hoopla from their Library for Videos?

I am finding it harder and harder to get specific Blu-Ray or DVDs from the library, so decided to research more modern options to check out stuff. I found my library supports 2 services: Kanopy and Hoopla. https://www.kanopy.com/ https://www.hoopladigital.com/ Neither have apps supported by my brand of smart TV, but they do have iPhone apps. I would like to watch the shows on my TV, so I finally got around to figuring out how AirPlay works. Kanopy - I downloaded the app and got it working with no problem. This works like a streaming service. You use your library card to log in and get 100 points/month, which is plenty. I was able to get AirPlay working with no issues so can watch shows on my TV from my phone. It doesn't work perfectly, but ...

Good catch! I didn't think anyone would notice. That is the double-secret option only I have access to.

Seriously, I just did too many edits and messed it up.

Re: What's Your Exit Strategy (for tax-deferred retirement accounts)

We have had dozens of threads on this topic. It really isn't a trap. True. I didn't mean to rehash old topics. My view is it really is very situation-dependent. The more I study this topic, the more I realize rules-of-thumb simply do not work here. When I decided to do some big conversions, I had a list of about 20 different factors I had to consider, and made a year-by-year spreadsheet mapping out my projections. It really is a very complex problem. I guess I should have had Akbar yell out "It may or may not be a trap, depending on your highly individualized list of factors and life circumstance!". But that just didn't seem as humorous. The point of my original post is to make sure folks at least keep in mind how they will event...

I keep imagining that fish-guy from Star Wars yelling "It's a trap!"
I can't imagine Admiral Ackbar thinking about RMDs at that moment :P

Good one!

But maybe he was? See 3:30 in this video:

I am sorry to hear that about your father. It must have been very tough on you and your family.

That is #11 on my list. There were too many exceptions to list:
