Re: Trading in a car with a good interest rate loan
Do a search on your car’s trade in value. You can use KBB.com. If the loan amount is more than your trade in value you are kind of stuck. Might be worth selling the car yourself for more than trade in or sell it to someone like Carvana. You are going to lose if you trade it in for the new car. Dealers love doing that deal. They will put your trade in on the lot after paying off the low interest. Roll any residual amount owed into the new loan at a higher rate and make money off the old car when they sell it to someone else. Other option is to pay down you current loan so you get it down to trade in value and haggle at that point. The dealer probably wants used cars as most manufactures are still backed up and inventory is sparse.

OP you could do 80/20 VTI/VYM. That would just be a 100% equities with a dividend/value tilt. Both will go down in a market crash and have a close correlation to each other. Bonds (especially US treasuries) are not as aligned. Overall, 100% equities will be riskier with higher rewards in the end. More compensation for the added risk. The VYM reduces risk some but 20% bonds in place of this should reduce risk more with lower overall return. So yes, you could substitute VYM for bonds but it won’t quite be the same. In your view, how is it specifically that "VYM reduces the risk some"? I agree with you, but I'm trying to wrap my head around WHY specifically. Not a lot of difference between performance of VTI and VYM. Short history t...

Lots of snow at elevation currently. Unstable and dangerous conditions in the back country. There might even be snow in the lower desert areas. Snowshoeing on groomed trails or cross county skiing would probably be a better use of your time than hiking. Moab might be good right now. Mountain biking in Fruita? Alpine skiing is great right now!

If you hang out at the track after the COTA race days they usually have some big name act performing in their amphitheater. Track is pretty large and there is also a soccer pitch for the USL team. Bring your walking shoes! If you can get seats at the top of turn 1, do that. I like all of the seats past turn one on the hill good view from all of those. Usually a lot of passing happening around those areas too.

See if there is a good package with hotel, tickets, and transportation. They do run shuttles from downtown too. I have either used the shuttle or took an Uber. The shared ride drop off is a long way from the track but there were rickshaws that can run you to the track gates. If driving to track, get reserved parking and get there early on race day. Have fun!

So the basic idea is to shift your holdings to keep your AA balanced AND have the least amount of risk and/or tax consequences. This exercise could get complicated if you have several types of accounts. Are there times where this strategy does not work so well? Or does it almost always make sense to keep your overall AA the same? We’ll exclude 529 as this not really the same animal. One AA for all holdings = bad advice?
For those who have multiple holdings in multiple types of accounts, does it make sense to look at all of your portfolio with one asset allocation? It seems like a bucket approach would be better. Each type of account might have a different timeline for when you are going to use it. For example 529 should be treated as a retirement account in the aspect that you hit retirement at the time of starting college. So for this “bucket” you would need to go conservative around your kid’s freshman HS year to avoid sequence of returns risk. Same applies to HSA if you might use it for Medicare gap coverage expenses. Same goes for IRA and 401k over Roth. And then there is taxable accounts which also might be used or needed at a different time. Not all ...

Looks like VROOM is in a similar financial state. Not sure if they have interest payments due like Carvana but they probably do. Have read people’s reviews with similar issues as purchasing from Carvana. I guess that business model didn’t work out so well. Unfortunate since it is a very convenient way to purchase a car. T bills are already free money. I’m making 4.8% right now. I don’t have an opinion on your strategy other than to be really careful when you think you’ve found a loophole to beat the market. That’s about exactly when the market likes to teach you a lesson. Too bad inflation is more than 4.8%. Also you are being double taxed on the income unless it is in a tax sheltered account. Think about it. You loan government money with taxed $’s. The gov pays you interest with tax $’s. You pay taxes on the interest payment. You are not making 4.8% on treasuries :beer what does this have to do with the OP? Either way, Real returns are a lot lower on market losses or cash in the mattress. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the OP. Just clarifyin...

Anyway they said that they would send the title to me directly so I could do a self registration. Car is paid for in full and not able to get a title to register so I can drive it. Not sure which state to file with. Live in a different state than where I had to go to pick up the vehicle. Do I file in my state of residence where car would be registered, adjacent state where I purchased the vehicle from, the state where Carvana is headquartered, or all of the above? You can join me in PDO but will have missed out on multiple 10 - 13% discount to NAV opportunities to buy units from June 2022 through Dec 2022, + an additional .96/unit distribution in late December, I loaded up in 2 Roths and an HSA. IBD probably basis their predictions purely on technicals. The founder “became rich” by finding “cup and handle” patterns in stock charts. Think they sell their services in the form of investment seminars, news letters/stock tips, books. If these stocks do do well, it will be based on luck.

Talked to my lender and they sent me a proof of payment in full letter. Sent to Carvana and asked them to send the title to me directly in addition to a refund of registration fees so I can do the registration myself. Will see what happens. Their registration people seem to be completely incompetent. Won’t ever buy from them again unless they can provide a title at time of purchase. One other bad thing they did is require you to purchase an extended warranty from them. Seems illegal. I canceled as soon as I got the car home and was refunded quickly. They don’t make cancelling intuitive so I’m sure they make some money from this. If you don’t cancel right away they pro-rate the refund.

Just starting to think about SRR mitigation for retirement. Want to build up fixed income holdings starting in a few years (5 years before retirement). So total time frame of needed income would be for 5 years roughly. This would just be insurance against an equities crash. These ETFs have .5, 1, 2, etc year options. Just seems a lot easier than buying individual holdings with a little less risk too

Re: Should people start out conservative or aggressive
If you are the type of investor who wants to buy more shares when the market is down knowing that it will lower your overall cost per share, thus making you more money later in life. You should be 100% or close to it in a diversified equities portfolio. Otherwise have some cushion with short term treasuries or something. You do need to scale back when close to retirement with some safe fixed income to mitigate sequence of return risks. Need several years worth of stable income right before and a few years after initial retirement in case the market tanks. That way you won’t have to sell equities at a low price or loss. If you have to sell during a crash you have a good chance of running out of money later on.

Re: Methodology for buying VOO?
Normally (based on past performance) it is better to lump sum it or just buy when you have funds available. Unfortunately know one knows what the future holds. Might do better in current market buying on down days. There seems to be a lot of volatility and it might stay this way for the foreseeable future. But that is not guaranteed. If you have a long time horizon for buying (10 or so years or more), it probably won’t make much difference on how you buy it.

What defines a bubble?
[Thread merged into here --admin LadyGeek] SP500 went from 2200 to around 4750 in a spa that started 3/24/2020 to 11/19/2021. From the bottom to top was an increase of roughly 215%. Could this be considered a bubble at this point? Has there been any time in the history of the SP500 where the the market has risen so quickly? This is supposed to be a forum where “theory” can be discussed, so I’m trying to engage in a discussion on theory. Please stick to the question on topic and try and answer my questions. My theory is that the SP500 was way over inflated based on how quickly it went up and how high it went up. Mainly due to outside factors such as free money being pumped into the economy. Valid or not valid, that is my question :beer

S&P500 giant bubble?
If you look at the SP500 from March 2020 lows to highs hit in less than 2 years, there was an increase in value of about 50%. A large portion of this was fueled by Fed interactions and stimulus money. I haven’t looked back past this, but it seems like one of the largest bubbles ever. Have there been other meteoric rises that were greater than this period in the S&P500? Currently SP500 is only around 10% off it’s all time high. Is it still over inflated? Or is it actually not inflated when you take inflation into consideration? Sorry lots of questions in there. I don’t plan on changing anything investment wise. Just curious.

Re: HEDGEFUNDIE's excellent adventure Part II: The next journey
Has anyone done a comparison on different 3x ETF’s structure to see if one might be “safer” than another? Specifically looking at UPRO vs SPXL. Also would these be something that you could use as TLH partners? Their composition is very different but they are trying to accomplish the same goal of 3x daily SP500 returns. Would this be deemed as essentially identical?

Daytona NASCAR raceciever needed?
For anyone that has been to Daytona recently, can you hear the PA announcer over the cars there? Would it be recommended to get the head sets for broadcast while sitting up in the stands?

Re: Dividend fund in tax deferred space to turbo charge compounding?
Real world example: SCHD vs SCHG. Both US Large Cap equities. One focuses on dividend and quality. One on growth. YOY share price performance: SCHD = -3.5%, SCHG = -22.2%. Dividend payout: SCHD = 3.39%, SCHG = 0.55%. If you put $10k into each fund exactly one year ago SCHD holdings is worth $9650, SCHG = $7780. So if you reinvest the dividend back into each fund which one is worth more? It seems like a great time to put the higher divided from SCHG as well as reinvest its own dividend. You would still hold the same amount of SCHD and more of SCHG at a lower average cost per share. If the market turned around for the better and SCHG goes up more than SCHD, put the reinvestment back to SCHD from both funds and you will have more high dividend...
