Re: How much money do you want to retire?
I'm happy with our current lifestyle. Our expenses are between 120k and 130k. That includes two kids in the house. When they move out (both middle school age right now), I envision the same level of expenses which should give us a small lifestyle bump. I think 4.5 million will pay for that over a 40 year retirement. So we need to accumulate another two million in the next 9 years. Time will tell. You are the second poster to use those terms (4+ mil for 120-130) .We were going to retire with 3.5mil for 130K/yr (not basic but all we want to do). We thought 4% of 3.5 is 140 K , plus soc security, we would be ok. Are we estimating incorrectly? (no pension).House paid off. No debt. No kids.Retire in 2 yrs so maybe have a little more or little l...

Re: Early retirement mistakes???
I'm trying to prevent the regrets of friends who retired in last 5-8 yrs.
I will try to enter full retirement w/ pretty new (or minimally used) cars for both of us, very recent remodeling of house, updated adult toys. Just so I am starting with a 'clean slate' and if there is any bad market correction in the first several years I won't have to dip into funds for those easily anticipated expenses.

Re: safest downhill ski helmet
Decent article but 2013, since then some of the concerns have been addressed, such as MIPS. And Schumacher's style of skiing is prob a bit different than mine (A LOT)- I'm almost all front slope/groomed type of skiing. Agree that people are more nuts than in the past (faster, steeper, more reckless). And I can't imagine skiing w/o a helmet (have done so since ~2004). It can't help you if you hit a tree or go off a cliff or hit something stationary at 50+..but I've been hit by a snowboarder who lost control etc.
I think EPP foam seems to be better in the new helmets vs EPS? EPS is good for one impact (basically one fall) supposedly.
Yes, must be some rehab docs, neuro folks etc w/ some opinions. TIA.

Yes, they all supposedly pass the minimum regs. And MIPS is the new anti shear force technology. But what ski helmet is the safest WITHOUT buying a full downhill racer helmet (likely to get you on the JERRY OF THE DAY website)...?
Anyone out there researched this? Helmets aren't that expensive compared to brains.

Not sure if I need a 3k computer, that's why I'm asking. Typically buy one every 4 yrs-6 yrs.

Re: COBRA clarification (loophole?)
Technically possible, but also penny-wise, pound foolish IMHO. Have seen it done successfully (usually without that short open period) but also seen it backfire and create a fiasco that a prior poster alluded to-a work colleague did this, his wife had a car wreck, not terrible but 20K bills and there was a late filing, etc...etc...had to get a lawyer involved. I don't know exact details but it added insult to injury.

Am 60, can retire in next 1 yr, but still worried about health insurance. Could do COBRA for awhile but not til 65.
What are the best options, or what have you done? Any new/novel ideas?

Re: What are your strategies when shopping for a house?
Agree with people's recs to use prof inspector- but realize inspectors fall all across the spectrum/ Bell Curve like any other professional. We have now bought 8 houses (and 3 properties) over the years. Some inspectors have been great- most ok- 1 was horrible. They all have slick brochures- just a little input into a computer app/pgm with uploaded iphone pics. So don't be impressed. And ask before if there will be things they cannot evaluate***. Talking to past clients a plus-esp ones from a yr or more ago (to see if problems later surfaced the inspector should have caught). As I said earlier, buying a house can hide seasonal problems. We bought a house in the winter, the roof was <10 yrs old, covered in snow, ***inspector wouldn't go up t...

Re: What are your strategies whren shopping for a house?
I scour public records on any CCR's, HOA rules, forthcoming zoning changes, flood plains etc etc. Definitely talk to neighbors. I have talked to up to 5. Kept us from buying a place once.
Sometimes the place is quite different in different seasons. Sloped driveway is PITA in winter but may not be apparent in summer. Some days or weeks may not be so good (local music festivals are loud and close but didn't realize that in the fall). Weekends the dirt track a half mile away is LOUD even though it is a half mile away.
I am more interested in the neighborhood/locale bc those things can rarely be changed. The neighbor works out of town but is home and off 1 wk at a time and either parties or is loud w/ projects.

Yes, I'll lock up meds for sure from now on (the real addicts will steal the lock box). Like I said, i rarely use them so i forgot I had them when we started this service 2 mos ago. And I'll change locks. Still wondering if I should just quietly drop that service and pick up another.
Anyone say I should file a police report? Nothing will be done (i doubt), might P.O. the perp and make them and them bad brethren want to target my house (even if my 'stash' is very small).
Lic/bonded/insured is not something you usually see w/ cleaning ads.

Of course we will drop them. And BTW highly recommended from coworker (wife felt good bc coworker is picky/high standards). Only had 3 times. Highly suspected 2nd time- 110% sure this time. No video, but not worried about recovering. I had 30 opioid pills- got 6 mos ago, very rarely need. Thought maybe 5-10 gone last time so counted right before they came. 3 more missing. Mostly since they had access to lock box, afraid of reprisal/return if we report. Lock box code will change but paranoid self would think did she run out and copy key? I doubt it because I think it is the owner's young helper (owner great rep for a decade in town) and couldn't just take off mid-job. And dam*^%, JUST changed the locks 2 mos ago. Credit cards for the vast majority of purchases. Some Euros (or if non EU, some local currency) for small private enterprises, tips (occasionally appropriate) etc.
USAA has no intl fee-you can get one in less than a week. There are others. I have been given a number in the past without a physical card which is also an option.

Re: How to repel wild dogs?
Agree with most of the previous posters. Longest/strongest bear spray you can find-but figure out how you can get it to China**. I've used effectively with bears and dogs. What scares me are true wild packs or perhaps stray/released pit bulls. They are not going to stop w/ a kick/stab/punch but bear spray may work. There have been some horrific deaths of runners in relatively remote locales. And multiple dogs- I would immediately look for an escape route if one is possible. Have used hornet spray once as well- not as effective but sure sprays far. I was outside clearing brush and had the spray for under the roof and tree wasp nests and a dog threatened me...how convenient! Agree that a pellet gun would be virtually worthless. It would only w...

Re: best place to hide a key
Thanks for all the suggestions. Didn't know I would get so many, so now I will expound on our activities etc. Well, sometimes do 3-7 mile lake swims- sometimes i trail a buoy (visibility) with storage, sometimes I don't. Pockets, wallets sometimes not applicable. We do key exchange hikes/swims etc (with another hiker /runner/swimmer/biker)- you start on either side of lake/pass and exchange when u meet. Well, sometimes you don't see each other..rare but it happens. So it's good to have a key hidden for your car swap person. Also we have met folks on the trail we know and ask them to take something back and put it in our car. There are a lot of reasons to have a hidden key. I agree they can break any window and steal stuff. Fine. I just want...

StevieG72-thanks that's a great lock!
Only occasionally out w/ bike hitches but then easy to not lose key bc of hydration backpacks.
We don't carry our wallets.
Easy to hide a key for the house (or give the neighbor one) but we also have electronic key access for home.
I just don't want to be stranded in the boonies w/ no way to drive home. Have had a key locked in car..in desperation could break out window and drive home-never had to do it.

On/near a car when leaving it to hike or do activities. We seem to need it about once or twice a year at least. Even if we do our best, the key is lost or someone needs access etc. Magnetic key holders we've used hiding them in the usual spots i'm sure everyone has tried-wheel wells, bumpers. What do you do?
A few models have security codes but only a few.
Any other ideas?

Funding portfolio
In semi-retirement now. I formerly aggressively funded everything from HSA, IRA, 401k, profit sharing, as well as significant non-retirement accounts. Since I'm working quite a bit less, I would have to use every dime to continue to fund that way. So the obvious first one to drop is non retirement accts I would think. But what do I drop next? And as I near retirement, I feel the urge to stash away monies for purchases RIGHT AT RETIREMENT (e.g. new used car, any other upgrades wife and I are planning). Any advice? Thanks.

Resounding and emphatic yes. Car crash, ICU, rehab. long term care etc for both of you can approach 5-10 million. Too late to transfer assets. You are screwed. Get a 500 k deductible if you want. Yes great ideas for them. Our 'hell on earth' as well. No we won't accompany them. We had to in Hawaii-we biked up/down Haleakala and they wouldn't even drive up it so we did it again while my wife drove and I biked it again. Whatever 'PigeonForge' is, they would indeed probably like it. They are of Norwegian descent and have talked about visiting Norway but they every don't like the food etc. They MIGHT (prob not) tolerate an Americanized bus pseudotour of Norway. A distant cousin went on such a tour and although the pix of the scenery appealed to my inlaws, they found the food strange (in the discussions). And the cost was shockingly high- it's not cheap to take a bunch of Americans to a foreign country and try to insulate them from it ha...

They have mentioned Nashville etc. And bus trip with like minded seniors would be good. They SAY they want to travel but would never venture anywhere new, but if we drag them somewhere they really like it, but it has to be spoonfed. When we were in Hawaii, he snuck off to McDonalds 2 mornings before we woke up.But we took them to a luau and they won't shut up about how great it was hah. I seriously think the most fun they have is telling their friends at home that we took them to something uncomfortable. 'We do it for the stories we can tell'. Keep the ideas coming please. So far a bus trip to Nashville etc is doable. I remember now that they still talk about the time they drove to Memphis about 40 yrs ago..Graceland. I'm still unsure about...

Just looking for brainstorming ideas. We might or might not accompany them. Our ideas for vacation are disparate (adventure/exercise vs not). They want to travel but don't like new things particularly-that is why we need help w/ ideas. We surprised them with a Hawaiian vacation and his first words were 'What am I going to do in Hawaii?' :D He loves old country music (Cash, Willie, Waylon etc) but doesn't follow new music. He is kind of stuck in the 50's. She is minimally more adventuresome-doesn't need meat potatoes each meal. I can add detail as needed but any idea not too crazy. Like I said, they say they want to travel-early 70's. They did like Hawaii-drove them around alot. They put there feet in the ocean water once to say they did it....

Re: Don't market time...i know, i know.
I was about to post my portfolio (not precisely to remain anonymous)..but should i do it on a new thread (more responses that way?) or just drop the post in right here? Pretty new to the forum and infrequent (every 1-2 wks), so not sure of best etiquette. thanks.

Re: Thinking of splitting up my portfolio
What about different sites in case of hacker/fund vulnerability in the future? Wouldn't it be ideal to have a 2 different families of funds and the local bank/CU for emergencies?
