Re: Any Aviation Medical Examiners out there?

I'm an AME but have no idea about your question since I don't fly. I've never seen anything remotely related to the AME related questions on my taxes (I use turbotax). Have you tried asking your regional office?

Re: For those who earn $500k+ per year. How'd you do that?

There's a mountain of evidence that earning more money beyond having your needs comfortably covered (think $60k to $100k range for a family of 4 in most areas of the US) doesn't make people happier. I think the assumption in these studies, which is often true outside of the Boglehead community, is ...

Have you looked at days on market for the neighborhood for similar prices houses? That might be a good indicator of how hard it will be to sell should the need arise

Re: Move to South Florida or Baltimore?

I work in a hospital in Baltimore and commute from Howard county. As another poster put it the schools are on par or better than Montgomery county. There are some great resources for special needs kids as well. Many of my colleagues live north of the city in Baltimore county and utilize either the p...

I enjoy this part as much as taking the pictures. although i have been impressed with what phones can do with editing images as well. And i feel like most of my family looks at my ...

Re: USAA getting out of mutual fund biz

I have their target date fund (I think the ER is 0.78). I've had it for a while now and have thought about getting out of it but part of me feels like I don't want to pay the capital gains. I guess this might be an incentive to move it if this new company is taking it over

Like other posters I think dc has some great places. Tom sietsema is usually spot on. Rasika is great. The inn at little Washington (about an hour outside dc) is amazing!

You'll have plenty of good options to enjoy

Re: Emotional Investor - I'm a mess and need help!

You could start by designating one Vanguard fund as absolutely untouchable. Money goes in but never comes out. Ideally give your wife total control of that account, so you can't even check the balance, let alone move it around. Then you can continue to play with your other investments, if you can't...

Re: Parallels between investing and fantasy football?

Ha I've actually been thinking about this as the FF season is getting underway 1) the more I "actively" manage my team I don't think I actually do any better 2) most of the fantasy advice people don't outperform and are wrong about their "picks" 3) it's really hard (IMO) to know what's going to happ...

Re: What to do with cash/emergency fund

For those of you with savings/emergency funds in vanguard prime money market how quickly can you get that money out? For example if you needed $15k on a weekend for an emergency would you be able to pull it out right away? I feel like if it's my savings account at least my bank would be able to get ...

Smarter than the market? ragnathor and DownToThis, if you haven't yet read this excellent article by Morgan Housel, "The Psychology of Money," it's worth a look. Read it carefully and you will see why the Boglehead philosophy of investing works. Actually, it should be required reading for any new B...

Re: When I thought I was smarter than the market

Thank you for posting this. I'm new to bogleheads and I've been thinking about this type of stuff recently. I have some individual stocks I bought before coming here that have done well. But I have a feeling that won't last. I'm a buy and hold type and the majority of my money is low cost index fund...

Has anyone looked into the 2019 toyota Rav4? the redesign looks pretty nice and the hybrid version seems like a good bang for the buck. Doesn't come out until winter though.

Re: Grass is always greener, federal edition

I would Say your better off getting advice from the people you mentioned who have left. The federal government is vast and has a lot of different niches. The people posting here might not have the same understanding of what your private sector options are. But since you already know people who have ...

Re: Rent or Buy? Military Doc. What would you do?

Agree with all of the above. Rent. I also, importantly, didn't see anything about having a down payment. As a fellow military physician, 5 to 6 years could be optimistic for a single time on station unless you're in a subspecialty that has very few locations. I've had colleagues who had to PCS afte...

I was in your same shoes. USAA checking, savings, CC, home/auto/VPP/umbrella insurance and Roth IRA. In December I started to look at ERs (around the time I started reading this website). Transferred the IRA over to vanguard and it was pretty process. Still am plenty loyal to USAA overall

Yes, $8200 does include taxes and insurance. Right now we live in a cheap 2 bedroom rental in a great location, but have no amenities and are outgrowing the unit. We've been able to save a lot because of this, but need more convenience and permanence in our life. Have you done a monthly breakdown o...

Re: Buy a house? But there's a student loan elephant in the room

Thanks. I was originally looking for advice on how to deal with buying a house. I don’t appreciate the focus on our low salaries. We both had lower salaries in an academic setting before now. I’m not looking for advice on how to make more money in a different geographical location. We live like res...
