Re: Timing the Market

It is pretty easy to find posts on this forum from 2014 where people were claiming that the stock market hit its peak and the bubble is about to pop. If people sold then they would be missing out on 75% gains.

I’d definitely leave some money in equities in case the market continues to rise.

Re: Lost out on promotion

Sorry to hear you were passed up on the promotion. Do you think the guy who got promoted is qualified? Would you be able to work with them well? I went through a somewhat similar situation at a previous employer. I was passed up on a promotion. The guy who got the promotion was smart but was an awfu...

Re: Tracking stocks

The way I understand it, the goal of the Alphabet restructuring is to give the "bets" more flexibility in how to operate. Everything at Google is very engineering-driven with a focus on ads, search, machine learning, etc... This is not necessarily how some of the bets like Waymo or Google Access (fi...

Co-investment with parents and sibling jealosy [Home construction]

My wife and I live in a HCOL area in the United States. Her parents own a shoddy house nearby on a very nice lot and we have all been discussing tearing their house down and building a large multi-generational house (effectively two units) on their lot where all of us could live. In principle, if th...

Re: 2018 financial goals - what are yours?

Our 2018 goals: 1) Max 401k and wife's 403b (sadly a non-matching 403b, but useful for tax reduction). 2) Perform backdoor roths 3) Continue saving for a down payment on our next house 4) Max HSA 5) Contribute to our son's 529 plan 6) Figure out ways to reduce our tax burden. We live in California a...

Re: Is a Year on the JOb too Soon to Ask For a Promotion?

I'd say it never hurts to ask for a promotion / raise, especially if you feel that it's justified. Best case you'll get it, and worst-case you'll hear in detail why it wasn't granted. If the feedback is actionable, you can focus on doing what they say and ask again in 6 months or a year.

Re: To buy or not in the SF Bay Area (yes another one)

I'd say if you are optimizing for investment returns, renting is probably the better option. Like you said bay area housing prices are out of control and property taxes will hurt a lot (and could get worse under the new tax plan). However, I'd say that bay area house prices are highly corellated wit...

Re: SodaStream Jet vs SodaStream Fizzi vs no SodaStream

You can actually buy a hose that connects the SodaStream directly to a standard CGA-320 CO2 tank: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GIL0JGY I bought one of those with a 20LB CO2 tank from AirGas. It works great and it can probably go 1-2 years without swapping. Oh, and swapping a standard 20lb CO...

Re: Just not getting it

I occasionally have similar sentiments as well. I think about all the companies in an index fund and I know that some of them are dying (e.g Amazon crushing companies in the retail space). It's your money. If you have strong beliefs about how things will be shaped in the future, you are free to make...

Re: Do you have any guilty pleasure investments?

1) Bitcoin. I put in a very small amount about 1.5 months ago and have been enjoying the roller coaster ride :) 2) Square stock. I bought some after the IPO (around $13), and now it's around $38. A few of the most talented people I know work at Square. I had an interview there once (did not get the ...
