With both stock and bond markets so high and you having no emergency fund, why do you want to risk your money by investing at this time. Invest only to get the company match, that is free money. I am not in any way endorsing Jim Cramer. I subscribed to his Action Alert but did not renew. I learned a lot from it and it has helped me to do better in the market. Cramer has good concepts. When the tide turns from passive investing, I would not be surprised to see Ramen beat the market by a large amount. Right now it is hard for anyone actively picking stocks.

Do not count in recovering in 10 years. Recent hI story may not repeat itself. Stocks are very e pensive. It is possible that 10 years from now stocks may be lower.

It looks like the plan was designed long time ago when interest rates were higher. You best course may be to amend the plan with a different criteria. Then you can invest in a low cost balanced fund.

Agree with the comments above that it will be difficult to predict 5% certain return year after year. You may end up averaging more than 5% in stock funds but you may have down years. In fixed income you can not get 5% in investment grade funds. You can get 5% return in some junk bond funds but you ...
