Re: three fund portfolio and tax efficiency

Hello, and welcome to the forums! Hopefully, someone smarter than me will come along shortly and give a more detailed response, but off the cuff, my advice is to put your stock funds in the Roth to allow for growth. Those will most likely be your highest growth funds, and you will benefit down the line by taking them out tax-free when you retire. Keep your bond funds and possibly international funds in your pre-tax account. You state that you don't have a 401k, but can you open a self-directed IRA for the bond funds and international funds? You could also simply put a target date fund in the IRA as well. Any savings after that could be in a brokerage account. The usual suggestion is to put any additional stock funds in the after-tax account...

Re: Aids for slowing down speech when talking with hard-of-hearing

For whatever reason, my mother never got hearing aids and so her hearing has steadily declined to the point where she is nearly deaf. But increasing the volume of speech doesn't necessarily help so much as slowing down the speech. She can understand when people speak slowly (particularly directly into her ear) and enunciate each syllable. This is okay for short-burst communications but I'd like to figure out a way to more easily have longer conversations. I'm wondering if there is some kind of technology that can be used to slow down one's speech and thus enable her to understand it. Ideal would be something attached to a megaphone or portable microphone. Such a contraption would effectively boost (my) volume and slow down speech at the sa...

I know that my father would have wanted me to help others with what we have learned over the past few months, because that was the kind of guy that he was.

It was a stressful few months for many reasons, and a good portion of that stress was financial, so if our family's experience can help anyone else, it is a way that I can honor my father and I am glad to do it.
I am truly sorry for your loss, and thank you for sharing your experience with the community.

Re: Adding child as authorized user on cc

That is not how it works. When you add a minor the credit history goes to the primary holder of the card and the primary holder is responsible for all the minor expenses. In theory if the minor is irresponsible then you will have to pay - that is why they do not ask the SSN of the minor. To accumulate credit history for the first time, you get what is known as "secured credit card" (needs SSN). There are limits to "secured credit card" as to how much you can spend. The limit will be gradually increase as time goes by assuming the minor is paying the credit card on time. Slowly and steadily the minor will start building credit history. Personally, I will not add my child to my credit card. It is bad to spend money when y...

Last post in mar 2023. Since then, I’ve JUST paid off the rest of the HELOC loan which was ~29K in March. I also upped my portfolio to 59K cost basis from 45K in March. So all In all, I do feel a large weight lifted off my shoulders , no more debt (and no more HELOCing the house for stocks again) and it feels like if my illness progresses and I lose my job somehow, at least I know I can survive awhile on my stocks since my contribution to our joint account is ~10K a year. Speech Language Pathologist. Yes, I would recommend it.

Pros:
Direct patient care
Meaningful work
Career demand- this field is always growing, high demand for SLPs
A variety of settings (schools, hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health)
The ability to specialize if needed/desired
Job security
Pays well

Cons:
Extensive and expensive schooling is needed
Graduate programs are tough to get into
Lots of paperwork in all settings
High pressure
Conduct issues (dealing with outbursts and undesired behaviors of some of our clients)
Minimal contact with coworkers (we're the lone SLP in some settings)

As a research professor, there are several options available to me. Since I'm a public institution, I could do the PSLF plan and be done with the debt after 10 years of payment. I'm less in favor of that option. PSLF requires you to be on a "qualified" payment plan, of which there are several but the "extended" 25-year plan with the lowest monthly payments did not count. You may want to reconsider PSLF, and once repayment starts determine what your payments would look like on a qualified plan and see if it makes sense to do a quallified income-based repayment plan for 10 years and then do PSLF. A very good resource is the reddit site for PSLF - https://www.reddit.com/r/PSLF/ I know several people who have used the infor...
